Experiences of self-care in people with type 2 diabetes : a literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease and a growing global public health problem. The treatment largely consists of self-care and can involve extensive lifestyle changes. The nurse's responsibility is to provide support, motivation, provide adapted information and education with the goal of reducing the progression of the disease to avoid complications and ill health. In this context, the persons 'experiences are necessary for the nurse to be able to provide support and improve the persons' conditions for perceived well-being and health.

Aim: Experiences of self-care in people with type 2 diabetes.

Method: This literature review has been produced in accordance with Friberg. From Cinahl Complete and PubMed, twelve original scientific articles were selected which together formed the result.

Results: Three themes were identified that highlighted individuals' experiences of self-care in type 2 diabetes and resulted in the headlines: lifelong habits with challenges and opportunities, finding strength in oneself with the support of others and what is what? The value of the information.

Conclusion: Experiences of self-care in people with type 2 diabetes showed similarities regarding perceived challenges in lifestyle changes, regardless of location, background and gender. Challenges could be about withholding adapted information and receiving support required could cause reduced motivation for self-care. The nurse has a prominent role and responsibility for training in self-care by continuously offering support and providing information adapted to people where family or other close relatives are also involved.
