Transgender people’s experiences of encounters with healthcare professionals : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: All over the world the rights of transgender people are restricted by laws and standards. Transgender people are more exposed in the society and are more often exposed to discrimination, threats and violence. Because of this both the physical and mental health are underestimated for these people. The social network is an influencing factor for how the general health is experienced and has shown to relieve stress and depression. Nursing must be given with respect regardless of gender, skin color, cultural or ethnic background, social status and sexual orientation.

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe transgender people’s experience of the encounters with healthcare professionals.

Method: Literature review based on ten scientific articles that were reviewed and analyzed.

Results: The research resulted in five themes: Unequal care, The lack of knowledge and understanding, The feeling of vulnerability, Misgendered & Care relation.

Conclusion: Evidently, the way the healthcare professionals perceived the encounter was monumental for the experience as a whole. The experiences were often negative and connected to feelings like shame, vulnerability and anxiety. This was usually because of lack of knowledge about transgender people and their needs.
