Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund: Hjärtsvikt är en sjukdom som har ökat i samhället särskilt hos äldre personer. Sjukdomens konsekvenser tvingar äldre personer att göra stora livsförändringar för att kunna hantera vardagen. Sjuksköterskor har en omfattande roll att utbilda och informera om sjukdomen samt ge stöd till patienter med hjärtsvikt att utföra egenvård.

Syfte: Syftet var att beskriva äldre personers upplevelser av att leva med hjärtsvikt.

Metod: Metoden var en litteraturöversikt. Totalt inkluderades nio artiklar framsökta med hjälp av databaserna CINAHL Complete och PubMed. Åtta artiklar var kvalitativa och en tillämpade mixad metod. Artiklarna kategoriserades och tematiserades baserat på likheter och skillnader i resultaten.

Resultat: I resultatet framkom tre teman utifrån äldre personers upplevelser. Det första temat handlar om otillräcklig information, andra tema en förändrad kropp och det tredje handlar om äldre personers behov av stöd från anhöriga och vårdpersonal.

Slutsats: Äldre personer med hjärtsvikt har behov av stöd och vägledning för att kunna hantera sin egenvård. Framtida forskning behövs, från ett individinriktat perspektiv, för att undersöka vilka strategier som kan stödja äldre personers egenvård.

Abstract [en]

Background: Heart failure is a disease that has increased in the society, especially in elderly people. The consequences of this disease force older people to make major life changes to manage everyday life. Nurses have an extensive role to educate and inform about the disease and provide support to patients with heart failure to perform self-care.

Aim: The objective for this study is to describe elderly person’s experiences of living with heart failure.

Method: The method was a literature review. A total of nine articles searched using the databases CINAHL Complete and PubMed were included. Eight articles were qualitative, and one applied a mixed method. The articles were categorized and themed based on similarities and differences in the findings.

Results: The results revealed three themes based on the experiences of elderly persons. The first theme is about insufficient information, the second theme relates to a changed body, and the third theme is about elderly people's need for support from relatives and healthcare professionals.

Conclusion: Elderly persons with heart failure need more support and guidance to be able to manage their own self-care. Future research needs, from an individual-oriented perspective, to investigate which strategies can support elderly people's self-care.
