Music therapy in palliative care : A literature review on patients' experiences of music as an alternative treatment (engelsk)
Abstract [en]

Background: Music therapy can, in patients' pain and suffering, serve as treatment and alleviation as an alternative treatment method for drugs. Patients in palliative care may suffer from physical, mental, psychosocial as well as inner existential dimensions of pain. Music therapy can increase the well-being of patients.

Aim: To explore patients' experiences of music therapy in palliative care.

Method: The literature review is based on nine scientific articles, both quantitative and qualitative, published between 2008 and 2018. Searches were made in the databases CINAHL, PubMed, MEDLINE with FullText.

Results: The result revealed three themes, of which the first theme illustrates the meaning of music for the physiological aspects of man. The aspects that are affected by the patients are their breathing, heart rate and their physically experienced pain. The second emerging theme highlights psychosocial aspects that promote communication in palliative care. The psychosocial aspects enhanced patients' experiences of increased affinity and served as a starting point for patients to communicate. The third theme that emerged was the patients' inner psychic world, which was influenced by music therapy. Patients' existential dimension was influenced by music therapy in that old memories were experienced, which helped patients to reflect on the past. The music therapy then worked relaxing and provided a soothing feeling.

Discussion: Music therapy has a positive impact on patients in palliative care. A holistic approach, with the implementation of music therapy within the framework of care, has been shown to have a positive effect on the patient. To make the research possible both knowledge and time is needed, which is the responsibility of the nurse.
