Bakgrund: Multipel skleros, MS, är en kronisk autoimmun sjukdom med en oberäknelig natur, vilket speglas i variationen av symtom och sjukdomsförlopp. MS drabbar inte endast dem med sjukdomen utan även närstående. Varje individ som drabbas av MS har en unik upplevelse av hur det är att leva med sjukdomen och ingen annan kan sätta sig in i deras situation. Det kan vara utmanande och svårt för sjuksköterskan att vårda personer med MS och därför kan det vara viktig att sjuksköterskan har kunskap om upplevelser av att leva med sjukdomen. Detta kan bidra till att de som drabbas snabbare får den individuella hjälp och stöd de behöver, vilket kan leda till förbättrad hälsa och livskvalitet.

Syfte: Syftet var att belysa patienters upplevelser av hur det är att leva med multipel skleros.

Metod: Denna litteraturöversikt är baserad på 15 vetenskapligt granskade kvalitativa artiklar, vilka har analyserats noggrant enligt Fribergs modell och tillsammans utgjort en översikt av resultatet utifrån fem teman. CINAHL Complete och Nursing & Allied Health Database har använts som databaser i detta arbete.

Resultat: Fem teman utformades, där patientens upplevelser uppmärksammats, vilka redovisas under följande rubriker; Kunskap och information om multipel skleros, Den ständiga tröttheten, Bemötande av hälso- och sjukvårdspersonal, Vikten av socialt nätverk och Att forma ett nytt liv.

Diskussion: För att en människa ska ha möjlighet till utveckling, kunna bibehålla sin integritet och uppnå hälsa behöver människan aktivt anpassa sig till sin livssituation genom att interagera med miljön. Resultatet visade deltagare som lyckades interagera med miljön och anpassa sig till förändringar i livet medan andra misslyckades, vilket ledde till bristande hälsa och förlorad integritet.

Background: Multiple sclerosis, MS, is a chronic autoimmune disease and its nature is unpredictable, which is reflected in the variety of symptoms and the course of the disease. MS does not only affect those with the disease but also their relatives. Each individual who has MS has a unique experience of how it is to live with the disease and no one else can put themselves in their shoes. It may be challenging and difficult for the nurse to care for people with MS and therefore it may be important that the nurse has knowledge about experiences of living with the disease. This could help those who suffer to get the individual help and support they need faster, which can lead to increased health and quality of life.

Aim: The aim is to illuminate patient’s experiences of living with multiple sclerosis.

Method: This literature review is based on 15 scientifically reviewed, qualitative articles which have been carefully analyzed according to Friberg’s model and together constitute an overview of the results based on five themes. CINAHL Complete and Nursing & Allied Health Database have been used as databases.

Results: Five themes have been designed; Knowledge and information of multiple sclerosis, The continuous fatigue, Treatment of healthcare professionals, The importance of social network and To shape a new life.

Discussion: In order for a person to be able to develop, maintain integrity and achieve health, the person needs to actively adapt to his or her life situation by interacting with the environment. The result showed participants who managed to interact with the environment and adapt to changes in life while others failed, which lead to lacking health and loss of integrity.
