Nurse's experience of caring for patients in a palliative phase : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Palliative care is an approach of care provided for relief of suffering, support to patients and their families and increase quality of life when severe illness no longer can be cured. Every year, between 90,000 to 100,000 people die in Sweden and most of them are in need of palliative care before death. The nurse has an important role to play in creating a meaningful and natural journey towards death. This is based on the nurse maintaining the integrity of the patient, relieving symptoms, providing good care and support for the patient and close relatives.

Aim: The aimof this studywas to explore the nurses experiences of caring for patients on a palliative stage.

Method: A literature review according to Friberg (2017) has been completed. When searching for scientific articles, the databases Cinahl Complete, PubMed, Nursing and Allied Database and Medline were used. All articles described the nurses experience of palliative care. Ethically reviewed articles that have been assessed to contain good quality were selected. The selected studies were conducted within varied care context. The literature study is based on nine qualitative scientific articles and one quantitative article.

Results: In the result, three themes and seven subtemes emerged. These topics were related to positive and negative aspects as well as the importance of the working environment in the nursings palliative care work. The results showed that nurses experienced palliative care as meaningful and enriching. Fluctuating emotions, such as hope and despair, were described in connection with the care of suffering patients. Education and clinical experience gave a sense of safety in nurses.

Discussion: The result isdiscussed in relation to previous research, the authors own thoughts and based on Katie Eriksson's nursing theory.
