Nurse’s experiences in caring for patients with palliative cancer : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Cancer is a disease that affects more and more people. If the disease becomes incurable, care transitions from curative to palliative. But more and more patients are being treated palliatively in departments where the nurse does not possess specialized knowledge. The nurse's responsibility includes building a caring relationship with patients and close relatives and at the same time conducting good quality care, in an emotionally stressful environment. The research on the nurse's experience of caring for palliative with inadequate knowledge proves to have limitations. The right tools need to be provided in order for good care to be provided, which also seems beneficial to the nurse.

Aim: The aim of this literature review was to describe the experiences of nurses caring for patients with palliative cancer.

Method: A literature review was conducted according to Fribergs method. Searches was made in the databases: Cinahl Complete, Medline and PubMed. Where eight articles with a qualitative design was selected and was color-coded to distinguish themes.

Results: The result was divided in three themes: The importance of the relationship with patients and their relatives, Being affected and emotionally involved and Obstacles in palliative nursing. They mainly include the nurses' experiences of emotional involvement and perceived obstacles.

Discussion: The method discussion highlights the literature reviews strengths and weaknesses. In the results discussion, the results were discussed based on previous research, Rosemarie Rizzo Parses theory and the author's own reflections. Divided into two themes: Handling of emotions and Need for increased knowledge.
