Patients experience of being newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Resultat:  Resultatet delades in i tre teman och fem subteman.

Abstract [en]

Background: Type 2 diabetes involves a lifelong treatment where patients are in need of self-care and changing lifestyle. Type 2 diabetes is a global disease that is increasing globally, and since many patients need information and support in managing the disease, it is important to gain knowledge about how patients experience their life situation both mentally and physically.

Aim: The purpose was to describe patients' experiences of having been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

Method: Literature review based on ten scientific articles, eight with qualitative design, one quantitative and mixed design. The articles were found by searching from databases PsycINFO and CINAHL Complete. To get hold of the latest updated research articles published between 2007–2019 were included.

Results: The result was divided into three themes and five subthemes. The following themes were: Reactions to diagnosis, Need and significance of self-care after diagnosis and experiences of the care relationship and the associated subtemes were: acceptance, shame and stigma, transition and motivation, education, and information.

Discussion: The results are discussed based on how the patient's health can be promoted with the support of Orem's self-care theory in the results discussion. Timed care appointments can affect the patient's experience of participation in their own care. Lifestyle changes can be perceived as limiting but also meaningful. Motivation is an important component of self-care. Having contact with the health care can support the patient regardless of self-care capacity. More time and information can increase the patient's confidence and reduce confusion.
