Healthcare professionals’ experiences of caring for people living in homelessness : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Individuals who are in homelessness have one thing in common, they live within structural and social barriers and thus lack access to, for example stable housing, social networking security and protection. These individuals’ access to basic human needs is lacking in satisfaction, and this is having a negative impact on their health. Many suffer from physical and/or mental illnesses, alcohol abuse and/or drug abuse which can also negatively affect their compliance with care and treatment. The health care professionals’ perceived challenge to provide care for these individuals places high demands on knowledge about the lifestyle of homeless people in order to be able to offer good and safe care.

Aim: The purpose was to shed light in the healthcare professionals experiences of caring for people living in homelessness. Method: The literature review was conducted with 8 qualitative articles.

Results: Four main themes were identified: Knowledge of social and structural factors that can affect the health and care of the homeless persons. Working methods, to meet the healthcare needs of people living in homelessness. Strategies for establishing relationships with people living in homelessness. Prioritizing work tasks and lack of resourses in working with people living in homelessness.

Discussion: The context in which homeless people liv and their problems as substance use affect the adherence to care and treatment. Such situations require individualized approaches to successfully offer good care for these individuals. Joyce Travelbee’s nursing theory of communication and interpersonal relationships discusses the importance of healthcare professionals’ view of homeless people as of people, which can contribute to establishing trusting relationships that can thus promote homelessness’s compliance with care and treatment.
