Abstract [sv]

Diskussion: Diskussionen delas in i två delar.

Abstract [en]

Background: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a condition characterized by instability regarding emotions and self-image as well as problematic interpersonal relationships. These prominent traits are often handled through self-harm. People with BPD are commonly found in psychiatric care, while negative attitudes from healthcare professionals regarding BPD have been described in previous research.

Aim: The aim was to describe patients´ experiences of living with Borderline personality disorder (BPD).

Method:

A literature review was done, a total of 15 articles corresponding to the aim were found in the databases Cinahl, PubMed and PsycInfo and analyzed according to qualitative content analysis.

Results: The result had the overarching theme “A Long Struggle Through Life” and consisted of three main categories: The Difficult Emotions, The Relation To Care and To Believe In Change. Each main category had a number of subcategories

Discussion: The result was discussed based on Katie Erikssons (2015) theory of suffering and divided into two parts, the method and the results. Living with BPD were described as a struggle characterized by Suffering in life, suffering in their illness and Suffering caused by care. Positive experiences also emerged but respite recovery, a vulnerability remained.
