Psychoeducation as a care for people with depression and anxiety : A quantitative literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Metod: En kvantitativ litteraturöversikt innefattande tolv randomiserade kontrollerade studier.

Samtliga studier utfördes i öppenvård.

Abstract [en]

Background: Depression and anxiety disorders are common conditions worldwide. Nearly one-third of the population suffers from depression at some point in their lives, and a quarter suffer from some form of anxiety disorder. Depression and anxiety can include suffering and can, in worst case, lead to suicide. Nursing in depression and anxiety encompasses efforts to increase knowledge of the condition, promote health and adherence to treatment, and thus reduce symptoms. Psychoeducation is a common nursing intervention in psychiatric care even though knowledge about the effect is not established.

Aim: The aim was to evaluate psychoeducational interventions aimed at adults with depression and / or anxiety syndrome.

Method: A quantitative literature review including twelve randomized controlled trials. A search for literature in the databases Cinahl and PubMed was conducted. With the use of MeSH terms and free text words. The outcome measures were primarily depression and anxiety symptoms.

Results: The results comprise a total of twelve studies that were performed in ten countries. The number of participants varied between n = 34 to n = 239. The dropout rate in the studies ranged from 2.2 percent to 40.2 percent. All studies were performed in outpatient care. Of the twelve included studies, seven studies showed that psychoeducational interventions reduced depression and anxiety symptoms compared to other treatment or standard care. In two studies, the results showed that psychoeducation had a comparable effect with KBT.

Discussion: Psychoeducation can be an effective method of reducing anxiety and depression symptoms. It is difficult to draw certain conclusions from the result because several of the studies were relatively small and the content of the interventions varied widely. More well-designed randomized controlled trials that evaluate psychoeducational efforts are needed to ensure a good effect of the intervention.
