Communication and occupational identity : a qualitative study on social workers in the social services and their occupational identity regarding mass media coverage. (English)
Abstract [en]
The purpose of this study was to examine if the occupational identity of social workers is affected by mass media and their coverage. We have completed six semi structured interviews with social workers who work in the Swedish social services. An interview guide was designed with four main issues that was used as a template during the interviews.
We could, through our findings, identify themes that we analyzed with, among others, a systems theoretic perspective. The result of this study shows that we can identify two different discourses regarding social workers. One is the discourse in the media and public, one is the discourse within the social services.
Our conclusion in this study is that the occupational identity of social workers is not affected by the media because there is another, superior discourse. This discourse is created within the closed system that is the social services and it is within this system that the occupational identity is created.
