Womens’ experiences of living with Irritable Bowel Syndrome : a literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the collective name for a number of different dysfunctions throughout the intestinal tract. About 10-15 percent of Sweden's population live with the disease and it is more common for women to be diagnosed with IBS than for men.

Aim: The purpose was to describe women's experiences of living with IBS.

Method: A literature review where 11 qualitative and one qualitative article were selected based on structured searches in the CINAHL Complete and PubMed databases. The articles were analysed using Friberg's method, meaning that differences and similarities were analysed based on themes identified.

Results: Five themes that describe women's experiences of living with IBS were identified in the analyzed articles; (1) that many women feel that they are a burden for others, (2) that many women both hate and love their bodies, (3) that many women experience a loss of freedom and a lack of control, (4) that many women experience pain and shame, and (5) that many women experience both helplessness and strength due to their IBS.

Conclusion: Women with IBS experience that they are a burden to others while they also struggle with difficult feelings regarding their body, lost freedom, pain, shame, helplessness and strength. Healthcare is experienced negatively by many women and it has lead to negative consequences for both women and society. Nursing plays a crucial role in how women will experience their IBS.
