Abstract [en]

Background

Caring for dying people might be challenging. Person centered care, as well as palliative care, should focus on what is important for the person in need of care, and also for their relatives. The 6 S is a nursing model for facilitating and performing person centered palliative nursing care based on the person’s own wishes and with a holistic view of their multidimensional needs.

Aim

The aim of this study is to investigate how staff in nursing homes perceive themselves working according to a person centered palliative approach with persons in the end-of-life, and also whether there are any differences in perceptions between different care professions.

Method

This study has a quantitative approach using a questionnaire based on the 6S-model for person centered, palliative care, and is part of a larger intervention study.

Results

Results show that staff perceive themselves to provide good nursing care to people in nursing homes, both during the entire stay, and at the end of life. The results also show room for improvement in the holistic view of nursing, and that perceptions vary between different professions.

Discussion

The discussion is held from the concept of dignity
