To be Young and live with diabetes type 1 : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Fribergs modell användes under analysprocessen.

Abstract [en]

Background: Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that affects humans worldwide. The cause for type 1 diabetes is the amount of beta cells in the body that is heavily reduced, causing no too little insulin. The treatment consists of administration of medication (insulin) and self- care. Nurses have an important role in helping young patients with their diseases. Going from being a kid to adulthood can be a confusing period in life and being sick during that time with many hospital visits can be exhausting.

Aim: The aim was to describe adolescents experiences living with diabetes mellitus type 1.

Method: The chosen method is a literature review that provides a holistic view of the specific area. Friberg's model was used for the analysis process.

Results: The results were summarized in three categories; The experience of being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, Different forms of everyday problems in different parts of the world and Experiences of diabetes in everyday life.

Conclusion: Type 1 diabetes mellitus can cause lifestyle changes for young people and affect them in many different ways. Many of the adolescents' lives have changed because of the disease and the constant self-care it requires. A disease that is lifetime lasting can mean a lot of suffering for young people but it doesn't have to be. Having to constantly worry about blood sugar levels was something that the participants of this study thought was hard. Diabetes mellitus type 1 is both a challenging experience but it's a learning process.
