Living with a family member who has cancer : A literature review on the experiences of relatives (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Cancer is one of the most common deadly diseases in the world. When someone is afflicted with cancer it affects both the patient and their relatives in different ways. Nurses hold a significant role in treating the patient but also including their relatives regarding information about the disease and how relatives are to care for the patient at home.

Aim: The aim of this literature review was to evaluate relatives experiences in living with a family member that has cancer.

Method: A literature review with eleven scientific and qualitative articles was performed according to Fribergs method description. Searching for the articles was conducted in the databases Chinal complete and PubMed. The articles were analysed and categorised according to four themes, A big responsibility - taking on a new role, Lack of information, Relations within the family, and Relations with Healthcare.

Results: Relatives experienced a larger responsibility when their relative was diagnosed with cancer. The relatives also felt that the situation caused them to take on a new role as a caregiver. They felt like they required additional help from healthcare staff regarding information and education. They also preferred better relations to the healthcare staff as they considered that this would add to a heightened feeling of safety and control over the situation.

Summary: The literature review showed that relatives have an increased need from healthcare staff during the afflicted time where their relative was suffering with cancer. It became evident that healthcare does not share the same working routines in every situation and that treatment and information varied, but also that how relatives feel holds great significance during the course of the disease. Healthcare staff need to find a way to work that can be applied on all patients and relatives of the patients non-dependent on where they live or their socioeconomic status, to avoid unnecessary suffering in relatives.
