Nurses’ attitudes when meeting patients with obesity : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background Obesity is a global public health problem that exists throughout the society and has increased significantly in the last 50 years. People with obesity are stigmatized in society and in healthcare, which often leads to special treatment and unequal care.

Aim The aim of this study was to describe nurses attitudes when meeting patientes with obesity.

Method A literature review that has been analyzed and compiled. Ten articles have been used, seven quantitative and three qualitative. The articles are taken from Cinahl Complete and PubMed. Friberg's analysis model was used to analyze the articles.

Results In the result, three themes emerged with sub-themes. This answered to whether nurses had attitudes when meeting patients with obesity. There were both negative and positive attitudes.

Summary In summary, the literature review shows that nurses have attitudes when meeting patients with obesity. The attitudes arise, among other things, from one's own knowledge, experiences and prejudices. The results also show that there are major shortcomings within the care environment and that this often affects attitudes. Many nurses also complain about the lack of adequate knowledge and lack of time with the patients.
