Compliance in the treatment of hypertension – the patient’s perspective : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Resultat Tre teman framkom i resultatet.

Abstract [en]

Background Hypertension is a public health problem that occurs globally andin all social classes. The treatment consists of lifestyle changes and drug treatment. The lifestyle changes include eating a healthy diet, increasing physical activity, reducing stress and quitting smoking. The changes are based on the patient's selfcare and the nurse has a significant role through supportive and educational interventions. The outcome of the treatment for hypertension depends on the patient's compliance with the recommended treatment.

Aim The aim was to describe the patient's compliance with treatment for hypertension.

Method General literature review based on twelve scientific articles of qualitative methodology retrieved from the databases Cinahl Complete and PubMed. The articles were reviewed and analyzed using Friberg's method.

Results Three themes emerged in the results. These are related to the patient’s own ability, sociological factors, and the healthcare.

Summary The result highlighted insufficient knowledge as one of the reasons affecting patient compliance to treatment. Economic conditions, access to healthcare support and medication were also considered as different types of barriers. Finally, cultural and religious aspects were described as additional influencing factors.
