Acceptance, social challenges and resilience : A literary review based on people´s experience of losing an extremity through trauma (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Traumatic amputations are often a consequence of war but can also occur in daily life. In such cases, they´re often a result of traffic accidents or workplace accidents. Depression and post-traumatic stress disorder are common after this type of trauma. Phantom limb pain is also a phenomenon that occurs in relation to this injury.

Aim: To describe people´s experience of losing an extremity through trauma.

Method: This study is a literary review based on 10 original research articles. The data was collected from the databases PubMed and Cinahl compete. These articles were analyzed and themed.

Results: The themes that were found when analyzing the data were the impact on the physical health, impact on the phycological health, social impact and the importance of resilience. The central findings of this study were that the people who lost an extremity through trauma often had a hard time accepting the loss of the limb. Acceptance was, however, a key to finding peace and recovering from the injury. Some people found the injury embarrassing and felt stigmatized about this kind of injury. Others, often veterans, felt a kind of pride over the injury instead. The people´s resilience differs depending on their background and social surrounding.

Conclusions: The acceptance of the injury could prolong or help the transition process depending on how easy and fast the people accept their new situation. Different cultures' views on this injury and the level of stigma impact people's experience. There are differences in how civilians and soldiers experience a traumatic amputation.
