Bakgrund: Behovet av palliativ vård är stort, både i Sverige och globalt och behovet kommer fortsätta växa, bland annat på grund av en åldrande befolkning. Palliativ vård innebär ett förhållningssätt som har till syfte att ge ökad livskvalité hos patienter och dess närstående i livets slutskede. Dessa patienter återfinns i de flesta vårdverksamheter där sjuksköterskor verkar och sjuksköterskan har ett huvudansvar för omvårdnaden vid vård i livets slutskede. Detta ställer krav på såväl ett yrkesmässigt kunnande, likväl som på den personliga och sociala kompetensen

Syfte: Syftet var att beskriva sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av att vårda patienter i livets slutskede.

Metod: Metodvalet har utgått ifrån en litteraturöversikt. Den genomfördes genom sökning, urval och en analys av de vetenskapliga artiklarna enligt Fribergs (2022) beskrivning. Artiklarna hämtades från databaserna Cinahl complete och PubMed.

Resultat: Resultatet inkluderade elva kvalitativa studier och analysen mynnade ut i fem temaområden: Att lära känna och skapa välbefinnande för patienten, Att stödja närstående och främja delaktighet, Känslomässiga upplevelser av att vårda patienter i livets slutskede, Brister i samverkan och andra hinder inom den palliativa vården samt Behovet av teamarbete och stöd från kollegor.

Slutsats: Av resultatet och med stöd av Jean Watsons teori om den mänskliga omsorgen framkom det att sjuksköterskor behöver finna hållbara strategier för att hantera de svårigheter vård i livets slutskede kan innebära i vilket verksamheterna har ett stort ansvar. Det behöver finnas avsatt tid för reflektion, handledning och återhämtning. Detta kan skapa förutsättningar för en kvalitativ god vård som alla människor bör ha rätt till i sin sista tid i livet.

Background: The need for palliative care is large, both in Sweden and globally, and the need will continue to grow, among other things due to an aging population. Palliative care involves an approach that aims to provide increased quality of life for patients and their relatives in the final stages of life. These patients are found in most care facilities where nurses work and the nurse have a primary responsibility for end-of-life care. This place demands on professional knowledge as well as on personal and social competence.

Aim: The aim was to describe nurses’ experiences of caring for patients at the end of life.

Method: The choice of method has been based on a literature review. It was carried out through search, selection and an analysis of the scientific articles according to Friberg’s (2022) description. The articles were retrieved from the databases Cinahl Complete and PubMed.

Results: The result included eleven qualitative studies and the analysis resulted in five theme areas: Getting to know and creating well-being for the patient, Supporting relatives and promoting participation, Emotional experiences of caring for patients at the end of life, Lack of cooperation and other obstacles in palliative care and The need for teamwork and support from colleagues.

Conclusions: From the results and with the support of Jean Watson’s theory of human care, it emerged the nurses need to find sustainable strategies to deal with the difficulties end-of-life care can entail, in which the health organization has a great responsibility. There needs to be time set aside for reflection, guidance and recovery. This can create the conditions for the good, quality care that all people should be entitled to in their last days of life.
