Living with endometriosis : A literature study of women's experience (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Endometriosis is an estrogen-dependent condition characterized by the growth of endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity. The disorder inflicts pain on women and adversely affects their quality of life.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to describe women's experiences of living with endometriosis.

Method: An integrative literature review combining both qualitative and quantitative scientific articles. The analysis and discussion of the findings were grounded in previous research within the field, along with Katie Eriksson's theory and model of the suffering human being. This integrated approach facilitated a more profound understanding of the subject and augmented the study's contribution to the science of nursing.

Results: The findings of the study indicated that women with endometriosis experienced limitations in their daily lives. Pain was the most prevalent symptom, and the women faced a lack of knowledge about their condition both personally and in their surroundings. They were at risk of being disbelieved due to the normalization of their symptoms.
