Bakgrund: Vård i livets slutskede utgör den avslutande delen av palliativ vård. Patienter som lider av obotlig, livshotande sjukdom och befinner sig i livets slutskede behöver en holistisk och personcentrerad vård. Omvårdnad är en sjuksköterskans kompetensområde. Det är ett komplext uppdrag att samordna teamarbetet och ge personcentrerad vård.

Syfte: Att beskriva sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av att vårda vuxna patienter i livets slutskede.

Metod: En litteraturöversikt på 12 originalartiklar från PubMed och CINAHL analyserades enligt Fridbergs (2022) metodbeskrivning för litteraturöversikt med hjälp av sökorden:” nurse”,” nurses”,” terminal care”,” end of life”, “terminal”,”experience”,” perspective”,” perception”.

Resultat: Litteraturöversikten resulterade i tre teman. Första temat ”Sjuksköterskors positiva och negativa erfarenheter”, där sjuksköterskor beskrev komplexiteten i sina egna personliga erfarenheter och upplevelser av att ta hand om patienter i livets slutskede. Andra temat ”Sjuksköterskan i det patientnära arbetet” beskriver sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av personcentrerad vård och arbete med närstående, samt erfarenheter av döendeprocessen och de etiska aspekterna av vård i livets slutskede. Det sista temat berör ”Erfarenheter av faktorer relaterade till organisationen”, där sjuksköterskor beskrev hur teamarbete och organisationen påverkar förutsättningarna för god vård.

Slutsats: Att vårda patienter i livets slutskede medför många fysiska och emotionella utmaningar för sjuksköterskor, som möter komplexa etiska situationer och existentiella frågor. För att kunna närvara vid patientens lidande samtidigt ge holistisk och personcentrerad vård behöver sjuksköterskor kompetensutveckling och stöd från teamet och organisationen. Det är avgörande för ett professionellt förhållningssätt och för den personliga mentala hälsan att kunna hantera sina egna känslor och upplevelser relaterade till döendeprocessen.

Background End-of-life care constitutes the final part of palliative care. Patients suffering from incurable, life-threatening diseases and are in the final stages of life require holistic and person-centered care. Patient care is within the nurse’s scope of competence. Coordinating team efforts to provide person-centered care is a complex task.

Aim To describe nurses’ experiences of caring for adult patients at the end of life

Method A literature review of 12 original articles from the PubMed and CINAHL Analyzed following Fridberg's (2022) recommendations for literature review. Keywords: “nurse”, “nurses”, “terminal care”, “end of life”, “terminal”, “experience”, “perspective”, “perception”.

Results The literature review resulted in three themes. The first theme: “Nurses” positive and negative experiences”, where nurses described the complexity of their own personal experiences and encounters in caring for patients at the end of life. The second theme: “The nurse in near - patient care” describes nurses’ experiences of person-centered care and working with family members, as well as experiences of the dying process and the ethical aspects of end-of-life care. The final theme addresses “Experiences of organization-related factors”, where nurses described how teamwork and organization affect the conditions for good care.

Conclusions Caring for patients in the final stages of life entails many physical and emotional challenges for nurses, who encounter complex ethical situations and existential questions. To be present for the patient’s suffering while providing holistic and person-centered care, nurses need competence development and support from their team and organization. It is crucial for a professional approach and for personal mental well-being to be able to manage one's own emotions and experiences related to the process of dying.
