"I needed to shut myself away, but I really didn´t understand why" : Recovering from autistic burnout (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Autistic burnout has been discussed among people with autism for several years, mainly in social media. Early research describes autistic burnout as a condition involving exhaustion, loss of skills and an increased manifestation of autistic traits. In Sweden, the concept is not widely known but, from the authors' experience of working with adults with autism, experienced by individuals with autism every day.

Aim: The main aim of this thesis is to explore ways to recover from autistic burnout by asking people with lived experience. Secondly to explore how people with lived experience describe autistic burnout and exploring their thoughts on why it happened to them.

Method: Nine persons with lived experience of autistic burnout were interviewed using qualitative interview approach. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data.

Results: Six themes were identified with nine subthemes. Themes identified to help recovering from autistic burnout were (1) To do nothing (2) Increased understanding of oneself (3) Support from the community (4) Support and understanding from others (5) Positive activities (6) Having a good living environment. Overall security or safety seems to be important to recover. A feeling of security from having understanding and supporting people around, a secured economy and a safe and secure residence.

Conclusion: Many of the identified themes coincides with themes from earlier research which strengthen these findings. New findings in the research were the importance of motivating occupation and good living conditions. Motivating occupation was identified as a subtheme to support from the community as the occupation either was a form of nonpaid activity from the community or an employment with support.
