Bakgrund: Den ökande globala migrationen har lett till ett större kommunikationsglapp med patienter som inte talar det lokala språket vilket sjuksköterskor behöver hantera på sina arbetsplatser. Kommunikation är ett nyckelverktyg i sjuksköterskans arbete, och krävs för att säkerställa säker vård och öka vårdkvaliteten. Utan en fullt fungerande kommunikation mellan sjuksköterskan och patienten påverkas vårdrelationen negativt. Utan en fungerande kommunikation minskar patientens delaktighet och förtroendet för vården minskas. Personcentrerad vård är en viktig del av omvårdnadsarbete där kommunikation är en avgörande aspekt. Att använda professionell tolk kan bidra till en ökad vårdkvalitet. 

Syfte: Beskriva sjuksköterskans upplevelse av kommunikation med patienter som inte talar det lokala språket. 

Metod: En systematisk litteraturöversikt användes som metod i detta arbete. Databaser som har använts i denna litteraturöversikt var PubMed och Cinalh. Genom en urvalsprocess valdes tio stycken vetenskapliga originalartiklar publicerade mellan 2014- 2024. I analysen skapades tre teman som sedan diskuterades i förhållande till Joyce Travelbee’s teori, Interpersonal aspects of nursing.

Resultat: Resultatet innehåller tre olika teman: Upplevelse av användning av alternativ kommunikationsmetod, upplevda utmaningar i arbetsmiljö, upplevelser av vårdrelation. Sjuksköterskor som behöver hantera språkbarriärer upplevde att vårdrelationen samt arbetsmiljön påverkades negativt på grund av den bristande kommunikationen.

Slutsats: Det har genom detta arbete blivit tydligt att språkbarriärer orsakar problem i vårdkontexten. Det leder till en försämring av vårdandet samt bemötandet av patienterna. Sjuksköterskans arbetsbelastning ökar också på grund av den bristande kommunikationen. Det behövs tydligare riktlinjer för att missförstånd inte ska uppstå mellan patienter och vårdare.

Background: The increased global migration has led to wider communication gaps with patients who do not speak the local language which the nurse has to respond to at the workplace. Communication is a key working tool for the nurse and is needed to increase the safety and quality of care. Without fully functioning communication between the nurse and their patients the relationship is affected negatively. When the communication does not work the patient’s involvement and trust towards the care is reduced. Personcentered care is an important part of the nursing work. The use of an interpreter can lead to an increase in the quality of care.

Aim: To describe the experiences of nurses, regarding communication, when patients do not speak the local language 

Method: A systematic literature overview was the method that was used in this work. The databases PubMed and Cinalh were used for this literature overview. Through the selection process ten scientific original articles published between 2014-2024 were chosen. In the analysis three themes were created which were discussed regarding Joyce Travelbee’s theory, Interpersonal aspects of nursing.

Results: The result includes three different themes: Experiences of alternative communication, experiences of challenges in the work environment, and finally experiences of the nurse-patient relationship. The nurses that need to deal with the language barrier experienced that the nursepatient relationship and the work environment was affected negatively because of the lack of communication.

Conclusion: It has been clear, through this literature review, that the language barrier has created problems in the care context. These problems lead to a deterioration of the care and treatment for the patients. The nurse’s workload increases because of the lack of communication. Clearer guidelines are needed so that misunderstandings do not occur between the patient and the care giver.
