The nurse's attitude in the care of suicidal patients (English)
Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund:

Abstract [en]

Background:

Concerns about suicide have been around for thousands of years and suicide is a global public health problem. According to WHO statistics, one million people die each year due to suicide. Previous research shows that nurses may have different attitudes towards suicide that is affecting the care of the suicidal patient. The nurse will, during his/her work, come in contact with suicidal patients in all areas. It’s therefore important for the nurse to be prepared in the meeting with suicidal patients.

Aim:

The aim is to identify factors that affect the nurses' attitude in the care of suicidal patients.

Methods:

This study is a literature review based on 10 scientific articles.

Results:

It appeared that the nurse mood, personal experience, education / knowledge, age / experience and religion affect nurse’s attitudes positively or negatively in the care of suicidal patients.

Discussions:

Nursing care of suicidal patients facilitates if the nurse is holding a positive, nonjudgmental attitude. Among the themes that emerged from the results of the literature review, education is the most prominent in what is affecting the nurse's attitude. Aaron Antonovsky's theory, KASAM, has been used as a theoretical framework sense the theory is based on the sense of coherence.
