Urinary incontinence – A hidden and embarrassing problem : A litterateur review about women’s experiences of being urinary incontinent (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Urinary incontinence is a great problem for the society with a large number of unrecorded cases which demands great economical resources. There are several types of urinary incontinence and the treatment often varies with the type. Due to the large number of unrecorded cases the role as a nurses in the context of urinary incontinence is to be observant in her every day work to identify urinary incontinence and give adequate information and care based on the individual needs of the patient.

Aim: The Aim of this study was to describe women’s experiences of living with urinary incontinence.

Methods: The study is a literature review based on nine scientific articles with a qualitative approach.

Results: The themes that emerged when analyzing the articles where, How it affects everyday life, a private and embarrassing problem, contact with health care, resistance to seek care, thoughts about underlying causes and learning to handle the problem. The study shows that urinary incontinence can affect women in many different ways and causes suffering. Further the study shows that due to the urinary incontinence women could experience themselves as restricted regarding activity and social life. There was also a resistance seeking care and sometimes displeasure with the care they received.  The women also had many thoughts about what could have caused their urinary incontinence.

Discussions: This study shows that urinary incontinence is a complex problem which affects many aspects of the women’s lives. The discussion is based on the main themes that emerged in the result how the theory of comfort can help the nurse in the care for urinary incontinent women. The experience of shame and loss of self-esteem are common feelings among women that suffers from urinary incontinence. The nurse should therefore meet these women in a gentle and respectful manner to be able to initiate conversation about urinary incontinence.
