With life at stake : A qualitative study of how four elderly persons cope with their addiction to gambling and what help they have recieved (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This essay is based upon interviews with four elderly persons, at least 57 years old, who have been, or still are, more or less completely preoccupied with gambling. Gambling for money, or for other valuables, has since ancient times constituted an almost irresistible attraction to large parts of the communities individuals. For the majority this engagement stops at some “sound” level of gambling within the limits of what is acceptable, simply a pleasure among other available pleasures, without drastic result for the individual’s economic situation. However, for a few gambling develops more or less quickly to an addiction, not unlike similar addiction to alcohol, tobacco and narcotics, which the individual cannot control and which escalates to levels that include family disruption, heavy debts, criminal activities and even suicide as the ultimate consequence. Elderly persons who have admitted that they have become addicted to gambling should be able to transmit experiences that in turn ought to be used by the community to at least minimize gambling damages, both for the individual and for the community as a whole. This essay is a first attempt, but hopefully not the last, in such direction.

The elderly interviewed persons have gambled since youth but for different reasons their addiction has not become evident until several decades later. When searching assistance from social authorities the outcome has been disappointing. Instead voluntary organizations have been able to provide meaningful alternatives, for instance as resource persons for others who have become trapped in the same situation.
