Patients' experiences of involvement in psychiatric inpatient care : Systematic literaturereview (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: In Sweden are every day 3,000 people being treated under the Compulsory Mental Care Act (LPT) or the Act on the right to compulsory psychiatric care (LRV). In today's society there are both laws and guidelines about the importance of patient participation. Despite this, the patient feels that they are not involved in their care. There is not enough evidence of how shared decision making has been used in psychiatric care and therefore need further research in the area.

Aim: The aim was to describe patients' experience of participation when they were treated with compulsory treatment in an inpatient department.

Method: Systematic literature review of 14 scientific articles. The material was analyzed by thematic analysis inspired by Tomas and Harden (2008).

Results: The result resulted in six themes. Results showed that many patients felt that they had difficulty understanding their situation. They did not understand what happened, why they were involuntary treatedand could not assimilate the information. The results also showed that patients appreciated when they were encountered with a positive attitude andwhen they felt that they were perceived as human beings.

Discussions: The systematic literature review was discussed using the theoretical framework KASAM comprehensibility, manageability and meaningfulness.

Abstract [sv]

Resultat: Resultatet resulterade i sexteman.
