    Abstract [en]

Only one in five instances of fraud is detected by internal and external audits and IT controls. Instances of corruption are most probably even less visible. How come, and what to do about it? This article treats deviances as a social and psychological problem. Rationalizations both from the fraudsters’ and the bystanders’ side will be discussed as important factors that obstruct the prevention of deviances. These rationalizations are interpreted as a kind of perverted modern virtues, something that might explain their persuasive power.

The continuation of perceived deviance: Independent confessional schools in Sweden 1795–20192023In: British Journal of Religious Education, ISSN 0141-6200, E-ISSN 1740-7931, Vol. 45, no 4, p. 313-324Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article aims to contribute to the ongoing discussion on public religion by describing how independent confessional schools were established in Sweden (1795–2019) and by clarifying and deconstructing the dominant ideals that underpin school policy initiatives concerning religion, education, and independent confessional schools. I seek to answer the question: In what way do independent confessional schools appear problematic in relation to general school policy during the period 1795–2019? Employing both descriptive quantitative analysis using register data on independent confessional schools and critical policy analysis inspired by Bacchi’s WPR-approach (‘What’s the Problem Represented to Be’), this study shows that (1) independent confessional schools are not a new or growing phenomenon in Sweden and (2) throughout this study’s focal period, regardless of whether a religious or secular foundation was ascribed to Sweden’s public school system, independent confessional schools were perceived to deviate from public schools’ principal values.

    Gender in nonprofit organizations: A critical review and research agenda2023In: Nonprofit Management & Leadership, ISSN 1048-6682, E-ISSN 1542-7854, Vol. 34, no 1, p. 195-209Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we suggest a research agenda based on a review of literature exploring gender in nonprofit organizations (NPOs) published in key field-specific journals in nonprofit studies. The literature review shows that gender is often included as an unproblematized variable and that few studies focus on organizational processes that (re)produce gender inequalities and promote gender equality in NPOs. There is thus a need to expand our knowledge concerning gender in NPOs. The purpose of this paper is therefore to contribute to the development of empirical and theoretical work concerning organizational processes that (re)produce gender in NPOs. In order to inspire such endeavors, we outline a research agenda that proposes an understanding of gender informed by gender theory, an acknowledgement of NPOs as arenas where gender is (re)produced, and a development of theories on NPOs as gendered organizations.

Revisiting the political nature of corporate philanthropic foundations: the case of Sweden2020In: Handbook on corporate foundations / [ed] Lonneke Roza; Steffen Bethmann; Lucas Meijs; Georg von Schnurbein, Cham, Switzerland: Springer Publishing Company, 2020, p. 253-269Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Almost a decade ago, it was argued that scholarly knowledge largely overlooked the political nature of foundations in favor of issues related to legislation, board composition, management, and societal contributions. As this argument still seems to apply, the aim of this chapter is to explore the political nature of corporate foundations (CFs). To meet this aim, this chapter draws out the contours of an emergent social imaginary concerning welfare provision from the outlook of CFs. The analysis builds on both survey data regarding CFs in Sweden and interviews with representatives from four different Swedish CFs, concerning the interlock between organizational visions and perceived contributions to welfare in this national context. A main conclusion in the chapter relates to the intermediary position of these organizations as they straddle the boundaries of corporate contexts and a public welfare system where they have a potential to influence both these worlds simultaneously, by carrying norms, values, and practices between them. It is also here that parts of the political significance of CFs can be found—both as expressions and containers of an emergent political vision of welfare in society.

Conference Note Benchmark 3.5, 2011, San Diego, CA - The Role of National Contexts: Nonprofit Management Education in Sweden2012In: Journal of Nonprofit Education and Leadership, ISSN 2157-0604, Vol. 2, no 2Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The fact that most research on nonprofit management education programs focuses on credit-based programs (Lee, 2002), coupled with the finding that international comparisons reveal national differences (Mirabella, Gemelli, Malcolm, & Berger, 2007), calls for more case-study and comparative research (Dolch, Ernst, McClusky, Mirabella, & Sadow, 2007; Donnelly-Cox & McGee, 2007; Mirabella, 2007; Wilson & Larson, 2002). Based on a panel presentation (Hvenmark & Segnestam Larsson, 2011), this article provides a brief presentation of the situation in Sweden with respect to nonprofit management education programs. It also offers an interpretation as to why the case of Sweden deviates from other countries, particularly regarding non-credit-based education programs. We then argue that these results enhance the knowledge and importance of national contexts and how they affect the development of nonprofit management education programs.

Varumärkesarbetet möter värdegrundsretoriken: En fallstudie av tjänsteföretaget ISS Facility Services2020Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Variations on a theme: Exploring understandings of the marketisation concept in civil society research2020In: International Review of Sociology, ISSN 0390-6701, E-ISSN 1469-9273, Vol. 30, no 3, p. 443-468Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

It is, today, widely accepted that market structures, logics, identities and activities are spreading throughout society, including civil society and its organisations. Scholars increasingly use the marketisation concept to describe these tendencies. This paper reviews the meaning attached to this concept, when used in the context of civil society. A sample of 210 peer-reviewed articles in civil society studies published between 1993 and 2017 is explored in an analysis that suggests that marketisation is being used with much variation in the literature. The analysis also shows that apart from more generic descriptions of persistent attempts to privatise and commodify various goods and services, few articles seem to involve more detailed definitions or profound conceptual arguments. Taken together, this indicates a development where the concept of marketisation runs the risk of losing its analytical powers. To avoid this, the paper proposes a stricter and more transparent use of the term ‘marketisation’ and suggests ways to further develop this concept in research.

Av vetenskap stärkt saklighet: En analys av hur Centralförbundet för alkohol- och narkotikaupplysning (CAN) använt vetenskap i ideologier, strukturer och processer för att framstå som oberoende (1902-2015)2017Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Creating Space for Grace: Swaying Religion by Means of Management2013Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In a normative economy, a criss-crossing of established boundary lines is taking place among different spheres of society. Languages, ideals, and values of the market sphere encroach the lives of public and civil society organizations, whereas public or civil society norms infuse corporations with social value. One such blurring of the established boundaries is the introduction of spirituality in mainstream management. The academic world, as well as management consultants, is increasingly explicit about the religious dimensions of organizational life, and a great number of highly diverse firms are said to instill spiritual approaches to their corporate cultures. Studies have also documented and studied the religious shift in mainstream business organizations. Here, in this paper, I focus instead on how the contemporary introduction of religion into religious organizations ironically enough is swayed by references to corporate ideals, norms, and values. In other words, the paper addresses the theoretical question of how new terms and ideals are brought into organizations.

Förtroendevalda i stormens öga: Ordförandes syn på kompetens och lärande i idrottsföreningar2014Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Ideologi i rörelse2018Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Standardizing Civil Society: Interpreting Organizational Development in the Tension Between Instrumentalism and Expressivism2011Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This book focuses on empirical phenomenon of organizational development, which seems to be trusted as the solution to many problems in civil society and the key to ‘the good society’. But can organizational development fulfil such expectations?

As civil society becomes increasingly prominent in local struggles, national debates, and international politics, scholars are paying attention to how it should be promoted and developed. One approach deployed to foster a vibrant civil society is organizational development. In addition to improved project and organizational performance, it is believed that more and better organizing will promote desirable qualities inherent in civil society and therefore the development of a good society.

In this book the author questions if organizational development within civil society can fulfil such expectations. Drawing on institutional theory and studies of cooperation among trade unions, faith-based organizations, and organizations of people with disabilities, he argues that organizational development of civil society organizations was never meant for implementa- tion. Instead it serves more as a legitimacy device for the involved actors in addition to protecting organizational praxis from conflicting internal and external demands.

The Standardization of Nonprofit Organizations by Organizational Development2013In: ARNOVA's Catalogue of Current Research: 41st Annual ConferenceRe-examining Philanthropy: Exploring Root Concepts for our Field(s), 2013Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Organizational development models are deployed with the idea to improve project and organizational performance in nonprofit organizations. However, there is concern in organizational research that these models may alter the distinctive character of nonprofit organizations. The aim of this paper is therefore to present a critical examination of organizational development in nonprofit organizations. The empirical material derives from case studies of organizational development. The main conclusion offered is that these models are not meant for implementation. Instead they serve as legitimacy devices, protect existing organizational praxis, and standardize the discourse on nonprofit organizations. (ABSTRACT FROM SUBMITTED PAPER)

The social meaning of money in non-profit organizations: A case study of formal and informal earmarking of money2021In: Journal of Nonprofit Education and Leadership, ISSN 1046-6819, E-ISSN 2157-0604, Vol. 11, no 3, p. 1-19Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

By studying mechanisms, justifications, and valuations, this article analyzes the so- cial meaning of earmarked money in a nonprofit organization. Focusing on the social meaning of money implies gaining insights into the moral underpinnings and justi- fications of the origin and generation of money as well as processes by which vari- ous streams of money are earmarked. Based on previous literature as well as our own research, we offer two models for understanding and studying processes that earmark and justify the earmarking of money. We illustrate the relevance of these models in a case study of the nonprofit organization IOGT-NTO in Sweden. We conclude the article by presenting key implications for nonprofit leadership and future research, in- cluding the recommendation that leaders need to analyze earmarking processes as well as how these processes affect organizations and to what ends money may be used.

Making volunteering economically valuable: the relationship between valuation devices and volunteering2017In: Voluntary Sector Review, ISSN 2040-8056, Vol. 8, no 3, p. 235-250Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article contributes to previous research on determining the economic value of volunteering by analysing the relationship between the valuation devices being proposed and volunteering and its properties. Is the relationship best characterised as direct, mediated or imposed? The empirical material for the article consists of volunteering economic valuation devices, as presented in previous research, which are analysed with a framework derived from the theoretical field of valuation. In addition to introducing the analytical framework and its application to the field of volunteering, the article discusses the absence of direct relationships while underscoring the dominance of the mediated relationship. It also argues that the imposed relationship highlights a hitherto less-discussed analytical dimension in the research debate on valuing volunteering. In conclusion, the relevance of the findings are discussed and ideas for a future research agenda presented.

International Mappings of Nonprofit Management Education: An Analytical Framework and the Case of Sweden2012In: Nonprofit Management & Leadership, ISSN 1048-6682, E-ISSN 1542-7854, Nonprofit Management and Leadership, ISSN 1542-7854, Vol. 23, no 1, p. 59-75Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Previous efforts to map and compare nonprofit management edu- cation across countries have proved difficult due to method- ological issues, conceptual developments, and empirical focus. Based in recent empirical research from Sweden, this article pre- sents an analytical framework that focuses on credit- and non- credit-based education, syllabi content, and organization of programs and courses and therefore allows for comparisons and analysis of nonprofit management education across countries. This framework may also contribute to the discussion on the best place for nonprofit management education and provide insights into the relationship between national nonprofit sector contexts and nonprofit management education.

The Board Development Conundrum in Local, Democratically Governed, and Membership-based Nonprofit Organizations2013Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Board research, assumes that board members in nonprofit organizations are ready to undertake board development activities to improve performance, efficiency, and accountability. Findings from questionnaire of a representative sample of 20.000 local, democratically governed, and membership-based nonprofit organizations in the field of sports in Sweden challenge the general validity of this assumption. For example, board members in local nonprofit organizations in Sweden regard working experience as more relevant for fulfilling the organizational mission than either formal or board education. Moreover, board development activities are oftentimes encouraged, but neither prioritized nor implemented. The proposed paper will therefore discuss the implications of these findings for the research field of nonprofit governance as well as address alternative development activities for local, democratically governed, and membership-based nonprofit organizations.

    Abstract [sv]

Meaning, Authority, Rationality and Care as MARCs of sustainable organisations2013In: Cross Cultural Management, ISSN 1352-7606, E-ISSN 1758-6089, Vol. 20, no 2, p. 161-185Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of the article is to present MARC, a model for assessing – and improving – the health of organisations from a humanistic point of view.

Design/methodology/approach – The model has been developed in an organisational development clinical research tradition. The validity of the model rests on logical reasoning grounded in organisational and salutogenic research, and on it appearing useful to clients and members in organisations where it has been employed.

Findings – When using the MARC model to structure analyses and facilitate discussions in organisations that have sought aid, the model has helped reveal major sources of imbalance between its four aspects: meaning, authority, rationality and care. A major survey revealed no statistically significant differences between men and women. This indicates that the MARC concepts are general rather than gender-specific. The results also contradicted the often stated notion that men emphasise “hard” aspects (A and R) while women emphasise “soft” ones (M and C).

Originality/value – The paper demonstrates that support for the importance of each of the four aspects – meaning, authority, rationality and care – as perspectives in analysing and understanding organisations can be found in the organisational research literature. The authors' contribution is to argue the case that they represent four important human needs that need to be attended to in balance in an organisation if cooperation between the individuals in the organisation is to be sustainable from a human-centred perspective. MARC is designed to help visualise and focus this balance.

Individual Actors Coping with Institutional Complexity Within a State-civil Society Partnership: The Role of Sensemaking2022In: Public Organization Review, ISSN 1566-7170, E-ISSN 1573-7098, Vol. 22, p. 1237-1255Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study investigates the role of sensemaking in individual actors' responses to tensions between institutional logics within a state-civil society partnership. It also links sensemaking to the partnership's practical activities. The study illustrates tensions that resulted from activation of sensemaking as actors drew on different institutional frameworks. Responses to tensions were legitimized by sensemaking processes, in turn affecting the partnership's practical activities. The study contributes to the literature by providing a nuanced understanding of individual actors' responses to institutional complexity, highlighting the role of sensemaking and demonstrating a link between sensemaking and the partnership's practical activities.
