The continuation of perceived deviance: Independent confessional schools in Sweden 1795–20192023In: British Journal of Religious Education, ISSN 0141-6200, E-ISSN 1740-7931, Vol. 45, no 4, p. 313-324Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article aims to contribute to the ongoing discussion on public religion by describing how independent confessional schools were established in Sweden (1795–2019) and by clarifying and deconstructing the dominant ideals that underpin school policy initiatives concerning religion, education, and independent confessional schools. I seek to answer the question: In what way do independent confessional schools appear problematic in relation to general school policy during the period 1795–2019? Employing both descriptive quantitative analysis using register data on independent confessional schools and critical policy analysis inspired by Bacchi’s WPR-approach (‘What’s the Problem Represented to Be’), this study shows that (1) independent confessional schools are not a new or growing phenomenon in Sweden and (2) throughout this study’s focal period, regardless of whether a religious or secular foundation was ascribed to Sweden’s public school system, independent confessional schools were perceived to deviate from public schools’ principal values.

Revisiting the political nature of corporate philanthropic foundations: the case of Sweden2020In: Handbook on corporate foundations / [ed] Lonneke Roza; Steffen Bethmann; Lucas Meijs; Georg von Schnurbein, Cham, Switzerland: Springer Publishing Company, 2020, p. 253-269Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Almost a decade ago, it was argued that scholarly knowledge largely overlooked the political nature of foundations in favor of issues related to legislation, board composition, management, and societal contributions. As this argument still seems to apply, the aim of this chapter is to explore the political nature of corporate foundations (CFs). To meet this aim, this chapter draws out the contours of an emergent social imaginary concerning welfare provision from the outlook of CFs. The analysis builds on both survey data regarding CFs in Sweden and interviews with representatives from four different Swedish CFs, concerning the interlock between organizational visions and perceived contributions to welfare in this national context. A main conclusion in the chapter relates to the intermediary position of these organizations as they straddle the boundaries of corporate contexts and a public welfare system where they have a potential to influence both these worlds simultaneously, by carrying norms, values, and practices between them. It is also here that parts of the political significance of CFs can be found—both as expressions and containers of an emergent political vision of welfare in society.

Barn- och ungdomsfotboll under Coronapandemin: De svenska erfarenheterna visar att folkhälsa är mer än smittskydd2021In: Socialmedicinsk Tidskrift, ISSN 0037-833X, no 1, p. 100-111Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This is a case study of how football associations in Stockholm handled the Corona pandemic in the spring of 2020. In Sweden, personal responsibility was emphasized, which meant that associations and voluntary leaders were given a great responsibility to interpret, manage and control compliance with the recommendations and restrictions decided. The results show that at all levels there were fears that even a temporary shut-down could have long term negative consequences. A key event was that the St Erikscup could be carried out, which during the pandemic added the unfamiliar role for the volunteers to try to keep certain hygiene rules and to ensure that no more than a maximum of 50 people gathered in connection with the matches.

Religious Minorities as a Risk and Resource: Theoretical Perspectives on State Management of Minority Religions2023In: Religious Minorities Online / [ed] Erica Baffelli; Alexander van der Haven; Michael Stausberg, Berlin, Boston: De Gruyter , 2023Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article explores how the two concepts of "risk" and "resource" can provide a framework to study and understand both current and historical perceptions and management of religious minorities in different contexts. By examining how policymakers identify religious minorities (or religion) as a risk or as aresource it is possible to develop an understanding of how policymakers set the terms for who is or is not included in the public realm as well as deepening the understanding of the underlying values of a society and ideological foundations contributing to the fear of the religious other.

Special issue introduction: Tenants organizing: precarization and resistance2021In: Radical Housing Journal, ISSN 2632-2870, Vol. 3, no 1, p. 121-129Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In 2019 we organized a conference casting light on the housing crisis and especially on the historical and contemporary organization of tenants to contest housing inequalities. By placing housing struggles and tenants’ organization at the centre of the debate we aimed at exposing and politicizing current capitalist development and, hopefully, at proposing a different view of how housing can be organized and imagined by discussing how resistance can be used, with what effects and how it can be connected to other struggles. This special issue is a result of this conference dealing with tenants’ organization in different contexts examining how tenants organize(d), why and what could be learned from it. In this introducing text we give an overview of this field of research by asking why tenants’ mobilizations are important to study, what is still under-studied in the field and which perspectives are important to raise in future research.

Promoting an image of independence: An institutional perspective on nonprofit organizational strategies2019In: Journal of ideology, Vol. 40, no 1Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article focuses on how the alleged value of independence in nonprofit organizations should be conceptualized, researched, and advanced. Through the conceptualization of independence as an institutional norm, the article makes several contributions to research on strategies for independence in nonprofit organizations. Rather than focusing on independence as a tangible organizational quality, the article studies and analyzes overarching strategies with which nonprofit organizations promote an image of independence. Recategorizations of results from previous research and illustrations from case studies of Swedish nonprofit ecolabeling serve as the main empirical material. By conceptualizing how nonprofit organizations employ multiple, and sometimes even contradictory, organizational strategies for being perceived as independent, the scope of research is broadened and the roles of institutional contexts and processes are highlighted.

Den svala svenska tilliten: Förutsättningar och utmaningar2013Book (Other academic)
