    Abstract [sv]

Constructions of various femininities among the oldest old women.2006In: Health Care for Women International, ISSN 0739-9332, E-ISSN 1096-4665, Vol. 27, no 10, p. 853-72Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study forms part of the Umeå 85+ Study, and the aim was to explore various gendered constructions of femininities among the oldest old women. Femininities are seen as various ways of shaping oneself as a woman in relation to the impact of historical, social, and cultural circumstances. Thematic narratives were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Through interpreting these narratives in the light of gender theories, we were able to discern four femininities: "being connected," "being an actor," "living in the shadow of others," and "being alienated." The oldest old women displayed complex outlooks on femininities, and no femininity was interpreted as being in the center related to the other femininities. Further research is needed in order to disclose the complexity of femininities related to factors such as social class, ethnicity, and financial situation among the oldest old, and to acquire a greater knowledge of various femininities.

Balancing within various discourses--the art of being old and living as a Sami woman.2006In: Health Care for Women International, ISSN 0739-9332, E-ISSN 1096-4665, Vol. 27, no 10, p. 873-92Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this part of the Umeå 85+ Study was to explore how indigenous women narrate their lives and their experience of being old as Sami women. Interviews with 9 old Sami women were analyzed using grounded theory. The categories identified were "reindeer as the basis of life," "longing for significant Sami values," "feeling valued as a Sami woman," and "changing for survival;" these evolved into the core category: "balancing within various discourses-the art of being old and living as a Sami woman." Knowing how to balance provided the ability to make use of available opportunities.

Motstånd och strategier i jämställdhetsarbete2015Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Vissa blir aggressiva. Många protesterar i tysthet.

    Abstract [sv]

Svenska ideella organisationers mervärde i biståndet2014Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

What is the significance of participating in study circles? Does the state achieve its objectives for providing financial support to study circles? This evaluation seeks to answer these questions based on register data, focus group interviews and a survey involving circle participants during 2012 who were 65 years or older.

Nineteen per cent of the population at large is 65 years old or more. In the study circles, 36 per cent were at least 65 years old, which means that almost 240,000 older people participated in study circles in 2012, 70 per cent of whom were women. The proportion of study circle participants in the age group 65+ has increased steadily over the last twenty years. Two-thirds of the older study circle participants were found in ABF and Studieförbundet Vuxenskolan, while this age group was underrepresented in the other eight study associations.

The study includes an analysis of the state’s objectives for supporting folkbildning. The current objectives have grown out of a process following the introduction of management by objectives in 1991. For most of the century during which the state has provided support for study circles, however, there have been no expressly stated objectives. Nevertheless, there are clear historically entrenched ideas and motives for supporting activities that benefit culture and democracy and for that folkbildning has a role to play both at the individual and the societal level. The analysis summarises the state’s objectives in that these focus on contributing to increasing the opportunity of all citizens to participate in various aspects of social life on an equal and democratic basis.

The evaluation makes references to research on democracy, citizenship, social capital and civil society. For issues involving older people, the research involves, among other things, successful ageing and activity theory.

There is a significant distance between the reality of study circles and the state’s objectives in providing them with support. The objectives also extensively overlap one another, something that is discussed and problematised in the report. Bearing these difficulties in mind, the results of the evaluation can be presented broken down into the different objectives.

The first objective: To support activities that help to strengthen and develop democracy

The first objective is that the state support for folkbildning should “support activities that help to strengthen and develop democracy” (freely translated). Study circle participants aged 65+ are found to vote in elections to a greater extent (90 per cent) than the same age group in the population as a whole (84 per cent). Study circle participants are also more involved in voluntary work than others in the same age group; they are more active in voluntary organisations, and they use their study circle skills as members of these organisations. Study circle participants who are also involved in voluntary work use their study circle skills to a greater extent than others to influence society. The study cannot provide an answer to what causes what; there is probably some interaction, so that those who are already active have a higher propensity to engage in more, something that is known as ’cumulative citizenship’.

The study circle ideal of participatory influence and collaborative work within the group has become stronger since a similar survey in 2008. Study circles can be considered as functioning as ’schools of democracy’ and serve as a recruiting ground for civil society organisations. Many study circle participants believe circle participation made them better at working together (30 per cent) and better at listening (40 per cent) – skills that can be said to strengthen their ability to be active citizens. The numbers are even higher for persons with disabilities.

The second objective: To help make it possible for people to influence their own life situation and create commitment to participate in community development

The second objective is “to help make it possible for people to influence their own life situation and create commitment to participate in community development” (freely translated). The study shows that study circle participation often leads to increased feelings of happiness and well-being (90 per cent) and some people felt more confident as a person (25 per cent). A sense of community is a strong incentive for participating in study circles, and this in no sense contradicts the fact that participants feel they have gained useful knowledge and skills. Very few people felt that they had been badly treated in the study circle. Many people aged 65+ make new friendships in study circles. It can be said that study circles provide bonding social capital. They create meaning in everyday life and help to make it possible for the individual to feel in control and have power over their own life. Study circles contribute to what can be called “successful ageing”.

For at least half of the study circle participants, the study circle, regardless of the subject, acted as an arena for discussions about social issues. This is particularly true in association- and companion circles. Discussions on such matters are not just a safety valve for airing opinions. Almost a third say that these talks influenced their own opinion. The same percentage says that discussions about social issues in study circles also led them to act in contexts outside the study circle.

The third objective: To help level out educational disparities and raise the level of enlightenment and education in society

The third objective for the state support for folkbildning is “to help level out educational disparities and raise the level of enlightenment and education in society” (freely translated). For study circle participants aged 65+, study circles have an important function for them to be able to study in a systematic way. Many people in this age group have not previously had that many opportunities to study, and study circles can compensate for deficiencies in schooling, thus helping to raise the level of enlightenment and education in this group.

Although computers were hardly used in the actual study circles among older people, 40 per cent of the study circle participants say that they have been inspired to use the internet. For learning in general, the study circle leaders play an important role. For most participants, study circle participation has inspired them to learn more about the subject or to join more study circles.

The fourth objective: To contribute to broadening the interest in culture and increase participation in cultural life

The fourth objective is “to contribute to broadening the interest in culture and increase participation in cultural life” (freely translated). Two-thirds of the older study circle participants state that study circle participation, regardless of the subject, has positively influenced their creativity. This figure is even higher for persons with disabilities. More than half had been inspired to participate in cultural activities. Of those who said that the study circle, regardless of subject, had given them new skills, which was the majority, one in twenty stated that they made much use of the knowledge and skills they gained in the study circle as practitioners in cultural activities.

    Summary assessment

The study circle experience is largely positive. Most study circle participants aged 65+ feel they have gained knowledge and skills, they have increased their social network and they have participated in meaningful activities.

The report illustrates the difficulties in answering the question of whether the state’s objectives have been met. It is unclear, for instance, whether the intention is for these to be fulfilled in every study circle, or simply in study circle activities as a whole.

In light of this, the overall assessment can be made that the state’s objectives in supporting folkbildning are met in a variety of different ways based on how study circle participants in the age group 65+ perceived their own study circle participation.

    Abstract [sv]

Challenging conceptualisations of work: Revisiting contemporary experiences of return to work and unemployment2021In: Journal of Occupational Science, ISSN 1442-7591, E-ISSN 2158-1576, Vol. 28, no 1, p. 81-94Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article draws on empirically derived illustrations of return to work and unemployment to critically explore how a narrow understanding of work pervades contemporary social policies and programmes. This is particularly relevant in economic and labour market transitions aligned with neoliberalism that individualise the social problem of unemployment and thus restrict occupational possibilities related to work. An overview of how work and related concepts have been conceptualised in occupational science scholarship is presented. After describing the theoretical orientation of the paper, three illustrations derived from a secondary analysis of data from projects conducted in Sweden and the United States are presented. The three empirically grounded illustrations are integrated with theory to highlight tensions between the politically informed structures that shape social policies and programmes and the individual experiences of work, unemployment, and return to work that users and providers of these programmes communicate. By asserting that success in work-related placement programmes is not synonymous with meaningful employment, we attempt to heighten awareness of the potential risks associated with a reliance on measuring work by merely being in paid formal employment.

Body and self: a phenomenological study on the ageing body and identity2006In: Journal of Medical Humanities, ISSN 1041-3545, E-ISSN 1573-3645, Vol. 32, no 1, p. 25-31Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to investigate how older people (60+) experience the ageing body and how these experiences affect aged peoples’ sense of identity. Explorative, open ended, interviews were conducted with 13 respondents between the ages of 63 and 82, recruited from a retired peoples’ organisation, Church organisations, and from the working population. The qualitative data was analysed with a phenomenological method, the so called EPP method, the empirical phenomenological psychological method. The results showed that generally the experience of the ageing body has to do with a changed life world, reactions to this change in terms of body and self, and finding ways to feel at home in this changed situation. Results are presented as three typologies, reflecting the different ways in which the respondents described this general experience: existential awakening, making it good enough, and new possibilities. The results give support to the research that points out the importance of activity for the self esteem of the elderly. According to this study, however, the meaning of “activity” can vary and can have different sources of motivation. Respondents in only one typology expressed frustration over limitations of the ageing body. Respondents exhibited entirely different ways of relating to the fact that death was approaching, which raises questions about how the elderly experience this impending horizon. Finally, the gender differences in this small study were quite clear: all the male respondents belonged to the typology “New possibilities”, raising questions about gender aspects concerning the meaning of freedom, appearance, activity, and self esteem.

The mysterious life of the body: a new look at psychosomatics1999Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to critically examine traditional psychosomatic theories, paying special attention to certain philosophical issues such as the mind-body problem and efficacious mechanisms of interaction between meaning, understood as psychosocial factors, and that which is traditionally called "body" (the material, objectified body). Afterwards, an alternative psychosomatic theory is worked out, drawing inspiration from the phenomenology of Maurice Merleau-Ponty. The first part of the dissertation examines the following schools of thought (orientations) concerning psychosomatic theory: 1) psychodynamic theory, 2) psychosomatic medicine, 3) stress theory as well as neuroimmunology and neuroendocrinology, and 4) the work of the psychobiologist Herbert Weiner. The phenomenological alternative worked out in part II of the dissertation breaks up dualistic and materialistic-reductionistic thinking by starting with the "lived body" rather than the objective body studied by natural science. The question then becomes, how is the mind-body unity lived, and what categories of understanding open up when the person-world field becomes the focus for psychosomatic theory.

Hur bör sociala insatser tillhandahållas?: En studie av Linköpings kommuns arbete med servicetjänster inom socialtjänsten2017Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Municipal night nurses' experience of the meaning of caring2009In: Nursing Ethics, ISSN 0969-7330, E-ISSN 1477-0989, Vol. 16, no 5, p. 599-612Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to elucidate municipal night registered nurses’ (RNs) experiences of the meaning of caring in nursing. The research context involved all night duty RNs working in municipal care of older people in a medium-sized municipality located in central Sweden. The meaning of caring in nursing was experienced as: caring for by advocacy, superior responsibility in caring, and consultative nursing service. The municipal night RNs’ experience of caring is interpreted as meanings in paradoxes: ‘being close at distance’, the condition of ‘being responsible with insignificant control’, and ‘being interdependently independent’. The RNs’ experience of the meaning of caring involves focusing on the care recipient by advocating their perspectives. The meaning of caring in this context is an endeavour to grasp an overall caring responsibility by responding to vocational and personal demands regarding the issue of being a RN, in guaranteeing ethical, qualitative and competent care for older people.

    Abstract [en]

This report introduces, with an empirical focus on Sweden, the field of research that emerges when rural research and civil society research intersects. The texts in the report was presented at a conference titled Civil societies of rural areas and smaller towns in 2021. The report is intended as an introduction to current research on this theme and we believe it can be interesting reading for both those active within civil society organisations and those active within authorities, regions and municipalities who relate to rural civil society in their work.

The report opens with a chapter that gives an overview of how civil society research and rural research has developed over time and discusses the need of research in the intersection of these two fields, research that focuses on the civil societies of rural areas. The other chapters present current research on rural civil societies, the research included covers a wide spectrum of different methods and different theoreticial perspectives.

Following the introduction, the report presents research that describes differences and similarities in civil society engagement between urban and rural areas in Sweden, deals with how access to service also can affect trust in institutions and discusses the importance of emotions in relation to civil society engagement and community development. Furthermore, an overall picture of the state of knowledge about social innovation as a response to rural societal challenges is presented, with a particular focus on the role of civil society and its cooperation with other actors.

Based on a study of civil society projects financed with public funds one chapter discusses how these financial resources are transformed into intangible resources for the benefit of the local community. The report also contains chapters that discuss civil society’s alternative educational paths that start from places’ own conditions, social movements for sustainability in the Swedish-Sámi countryside, and a final chapter that discusses how citizenship is reshaped when residents in rural areas and smaller towns increasingly need to rely on civil society’s solutions in order to have access to local everyday services and basic infrastructure.

Disciplined into Good Conduct: Gender Constructions of Users in a Municipal Psychiatric Context in Sweden2021In: Journal of Clinical Nursing, ISSN 0962-1067, E-ISSN 1365-2702, Vol. 30, no 15-16, p. 2258-2269Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To examine how gendered discursive norms and notions of masculinity and femininity were (re)produced in professional conversations about users of long-term municipality psychiatric care. Focus is on the staff's use of language in relation to gender constructions.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric care in Sweden has undergone tremendous changes in recent decades from custodian care in large hospitals to a care mainly located in a municipal context. People who need psychiatric care services often live in supporting houses. In municipal psychiatric care, staff conduct weekly professional meetings to discuss daily matters and the users' needs. Official reports of the Swedish government have shown that staff in municipal care services treat disabled women and men differently. Studies exploring gender in relation to users of long-term psychiatric care in municipalities have problematised the care and how staff, through language, construct users' gender. Therefore, language used by staff is a central tool for ascribing different gender identities of users.

DESIGN: The content of speech derived from audio recordings were analysed using Foucauldian discursive analysis. The COREQ checklist was used in this article.

RESULTS: The results indicate that by relying on gender discourses, staff create a conditional care related to how the users should demonstrate good conduct. In line with that, an overall discourse was created: Disciplined into good conduct. It was underpinned by three discourses inherent therein: The unreliable drinker and the confession, Threatened dignity, Doing different femininities.

CONCLUSION: The community psychiatric context generates a discourse of conduct in which staff, via spoken language (re)produces gendered patterns and power imbalances as a means to manage daily work routines. Such practices of care, in which constant, nearly panoptic, control despite the intention to promote autonomy, urgently require problematising current definitions of good conduct and normality.
