    Abstract [en]

Statistics and fathers´experiences from custody battles imply that mothers have more benefits when the court is ruling for sole custody. In our study we examine if norms and conceptions regarding parenting roles and gender roles might affect the outcome in these custody battles. Our empirical material is based on court documents from Stockholm District Court in 2018. We have created statistics from 121 custody battle court orders, and performed a qualitative study based on 18 custody battle court orders. We use Norman Fairclough´s critical discourse analysis as our theory and method, and as a complement we use Parenting practices divided in four dimensions by Jane Lewis and Elaine Welsh a theory, as well as research about gender roles av Ylva Elvin-Nowak.

Our research show a high number of cases with violence towards the mother, where the child has been witness to the violence. Some court cases concern parents with existing drug abuse or mental illness. All of these cases effect the outcome of the custody battle, with disadvantage to the violent parent or the parent with drug abuse/mental illness. Dominating themes and discourses in the results are Risk analysis, The child´s current living arrangement, Gendered Care Ability, Strategies and A Mother´s sense of right to her child is more apparent than a Father´s sense of right to his child. The results show that the outcome of a sole custody battle is primarily based on the child´s current living arrangement. We can show that some care abilities have different implications for mothers and fathers, and that mothers can exclude the father from the family as a strategy and benefit from it. Our study depicts a more nuanced image of how fathers are judged not only in the absence of “feminine” qualities.

Den dödliga omtanken: En litteraturstudie över svenska riktlinjer, handböcker och vårdprogram för Münchhausen by proxy2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: This study addresses the complex phenomenon of Münchhausen by proxy (MBP). MBP means that a parent finds or creates illnesses with his or her child. The child is allowed to undergo medical examinations, treatments and sampling. MBP has been included in the definition of child abuse since the beginning of the 2000s, a definition which is supposed to guide the work with vulnerable children in Sweden. Problem area: As MBP is defined as a form of physical child abuse in SOU 2001:72, this means shared social responsibility among societal actors. Health care is according to the Health Care Act (HSL, 2017:30) responsible for investigating and treating the physical care of the child, while the social services is responsible for investigating the child's protection and needs. According to the Social Services Act (SoL, 2001:453), the Social Services Board is responsible for securing safe and good conditions for children and young people. The Social Services Board shall also ensure that children and young people receive the protection and support they need. The fact that the health care system and the child welfare system share the responsibility for working with MBP can lead to challenges for practice, as the issue is located at the interface between different policy areas and professional fields of practice. As there is very limited research on MBP in Sweden, policy will play an important role in everyday practice regarding MBP. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore how the phenomenon of MBP is constructed in Swedish welfare policy, specifically in relation to social services and health care. Furthermore, the aim of the study was to investigate the construction of MBP in national and international research, to see how national policy relates to the research situation. Method and theory: A literature study with an abductive approach was carried out, examining national and international research, public documents from government agencies and authorities, Swedish public inquiries and guidelines for social work and health care in Sweden. The analysis is based upon the theory of the construction of social problems. Findings: MBP has been constructed as a problem in research, healthcare and social work in different extent. The guidelines and manuals that exist today for the social services work on child protection are few but extensive, although none of them mentions MBP. In existing Swedish legislation, there is no law available that explicitly mentions MBP, while there are various proposals for legislative changes that mentions MBP. For health care in Sweden there are national guidelines and regional care programs for the work of child abuse, that mentions MBP. There is statutory responsibility for the social work and health care to cooperate in the case of children at risk (SoL and HSL). The two different parts of the welfare system have different working methods, which means that the joint work in child welfare investigations can sometimes be problematic. Discussion and conclusion: Since the late 2000s, MBP has been discovered as a social problem in Sweden, defined as a form of physical child abuse, and fields of responsibility and guidelines have been developed, primarily within health care. Since social work has no guidelines about MBP, there is no organizational support for social workers to pay attention to cases of MBP. In the study we have made an effort to visualize the construction of MBP in Swedish context today, which has resulted in the founding of a gap and development opportunities for the social work guidelines on how MBP is being constructed today.

Socialsekreterares attityder gentemot våldsutövande män2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study investigates the social service workers attitudes towards violent men and their attitudes towards working with the target group. The empirical study has both quantitative and qualitative parts. A large part of the result consists of questionnaires from 41 social service workers, all of them working in one way or the other with domestic violence. The survey consists of some background issues, followed by a vignette from which statements have been formulated. The survey ends with two open questions that examine the reason why the social service worker works within the social services as well as their attitudes towards working with violence-enforcing men. Attribution theory was used in the design of the questionnaire and as a tool in the thematization of the survey's statements. Michel Lipsky's theory of street-level bureaucracy is also used to provide a more nuanced picture of the study’s results and to further understand the qualitative empirical part of the study. The study's results indicate, among other things, that there are no clear guidelines for social service workers to follow within the work area, that there is a strong perception among the social service workers that the demand for assistance by perpetrators is low, and that there is a relatively strong willingness to work with the target group, but that such work is performed to a limited extent.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to raise awareness of how professionals in social services treat and work with adolescents who have sex as self-injury behavior. The need for this study was based on the increased numbers of the adolescents who have sex as self-injury and also that social service is a key actor to notice these adolescents. Swedish social service should work for adolescents to grow up under safe conditions and pay special attention to adolescents who show signs of contrary development. In order to answer to the aim of this study the approach was qualitative in which semi structured interviewing was used. By using semi structured interviewing, the interviewees were given the opportunity to contribute to a nuanced aspect of the problem. The result was interpreted thematically and then analysed using a theoretical framework in order to better understand how professionals in social services treat and work with adolescents who have sex as self-injury behavior. The theoretical framework consisted of two theoretical concepts and frameworks: sex as a social construction and the significance of the relationship in professional work with people. The result of this essay show that professionals within social service do not actively work with adolescents with sex as self-injury, only when the problem is explicit in a specific case. The result also shows that the problem has not been addressed in social services and that the professionals rarely or never talk about it, either within the organization or with the adolescents. Besides that, the result also shows that the professionals need more knowledge about the problem and that the relationship is a prerequisite for the adolescents to tell professionals about this type of problems.

Reading nonprofit leadership from a gender perspective2019In: Reframing nonprofit organizations: Democracy, inclusion and social change / [ed] Angela M. Eikenberry, Roseanne M. Mirabella, Billie Sandberg, Irvine, CA: Melvin & Leigh, Publishers , 2019, p. 92-105Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Drawing on feminist theory and critique, this chapter explores how gender and gender inequalities are accounted for in mainstream scholarly writings on nonprofit leadership, and discusses the way this affects our understanding of leaders and leadership in nonprofit organizations (NPOs). By this we hope you will have an opportunity to expand your perspective of leadership and at the same time help you obtain a few tools for how to understand this particular topic not only in texts, but also in real life.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis explores discourses regarding children’s voice, in the Swedish Patient Act, as well as in Swedish patient organizations. In the Patient Act, children’s rights as patients are construed on the basis of custodians’ parental rights and the assumption that patients are competent and autonomous adults. The child is given an object position, weaker than an adult patient and subordinated to parents’ authority. Consequently, the integrity of the child is not absolute, as it is construed through an autonomy discourse and a family discourse which set boundaries for the child´s voice in the Patient Act. The family discourse combined with a mass movement discourse form the prerequisits for children’s voice in the context of patient organizations. As a consequence, patient organizations do not act as voice in relation to children’s rights as patients, in the Patient Act. Rather, interviews with representatives of patient organizations show that the parents act as voice having a child in need of health care. The position of children in the organizationsis ambiguous and, rather than having a voice of their own, children can be used in advertising campaigns to attract funding, expressing the voice of the organization. When children are used in this way by organizations, children’s integrity seem to be negotiable. The thesis shows that in both the Patient Act and the patient organizations, the integrity of the child is questioned. Children seem to be regarded as imperfect rights-holders and as imperfect members of society. This perception of the child is traced to dominant ethical perspectives from which children’s human rights have emerged. Drawing on current academic debates, analternative approach to these prevailing ethical perspectives is suggested. Instead of making rights conditional upon presumed autonomy and adulthood, rights can be perceived as relational and expressions of the mutual interdependence of humans, regardless of age and maturity. If rights are seen in this way, with children being understood not as essentially different but differently equal, then the child´s voice can have actual importance.

Samverkan – lösningen på alla problem?: en kvalitativ studie om begreppet samverkan inom Socialstyrelsens publikationer2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine in depth the concept of cooperation by means of a hermeneutical text analysis of seven publications written by Socialstyrelsen concerning children and young people. The aim of the study is to deepen the understanding of how the cooperation concept is understood and used in a Swedish government context. The publications we chose to study by Socialstyrelsen are thought to serve as guidance for different professionals, which means that the way in which cooperation concepts are produced in the publications can affect how the interaction works in practice, which we believe legitimizes the study.

In the result, we report what cooperation concepts are attributed, what reasons there are for cooperation and how people and organizations are affected by cooperation. The study leads to conclusions that the meaning of the concept of cooperation is fragmentary and that the most common reasons for cooperation are reciprocity and effectiveness. And that the knowledge in the publications about the way in which cooperation really affects people and organizations is insufficient.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study has been to increase the knowledge of how counsellors within health care view internet based treatment of patients who suffer from mental illnesses, to be able to describe and understand the possibilities and limitations with such forms of treatment. The study has been carried out through qualitative semi structured interviews with ten professional counsellors in eight different primary care units in Stockholm county. The transcripts of the interviews have been analysed by using the theory of symbolic interactionism. The result showed that the counsellors’ view of internet based treatment is ambivalent. The internet based treatment is complicated and the counsellors seeing both pros and cons indicates that there are both possibilities and limitations which such methods. The result also showed that the possibilities that the counsellors can identify in internet based treatment concerns availability and that such methods have the potential to be a valuable tool for those patient who desire such methods of treatment. When it comes to limitations the counsellors can see that treatment via internet make great demands on the patient’s own abilities and that written interaction is far less nuanced than the interactions of traditional treatment work. It is clear that the main reason for the counsellors’ hesitation about these methods is the lack of face-to-face interaction with the patient, as well as difficulties imagining the practical applications of the internet based treatment. Thus the internet based treatment work can not easily be compared with the traditional psychosocial work that occurs face-to-face, but should be considered as a potential complement to traditional treatments or even a complete new way of working.

Tränares kompetens och lärande i svenska idrottsföreningar2018Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to investigate participants' experiences and thoughts of participating in a general parent support program. The study interviewed 10 randomly selected parents who participated in the general Parent Support Program Children in Focus – ABC, in Haninge Municipality in 2015 and 2016. The questions the survey would like to answer was: Why the parents sought parent support programs? What did parents expect from parent support education? What did parents get from participating in parent support education? What importance does parental support education have for families and society at large? In the analysis of the interviews, seven common themes emerged that all responded to the questions of the inquiry: Because of conflicts, for social reasons, to deal with their own anger and stress, to improve their parental skills, for practical reasons, for confirmation and for that the occasion was given. The conclusions was among others that participating in general parenting support programs is an example of parents reflexive behavior in Giddens’s modern society.

    Abstract [en]

Swedish child welfare and compulsory care for children and adolescents has been discussed and problematized by most researchers and been statutory since the beginning of the 20th century. The law and the way Swedish society views problem behavior, child and adolescent delinquency and the need to care and protect the children with such needs has changed over time. For example, the dominant view, before the 20th century, was that society had a certain obligation to protect and help children and young in need, but rather was characterized by a community-protection approach. What society considers to be a problem behavior has changed over time and been corrected multiple times within the law. How people agree on what is a normal or problematic behavior, when it comes to children and adolescents, is through social processes and language. Through our common social processes and languages we construct a common reality to which we can relate. Legislation as such is a man-made construction of what we commonly consider to be the norms that we should follow. Therefore, we find it interesting to understand how children and adolescents problem behavior is expressed, produced or concretized in judgments relating to compulsory care.

The purpose of the study is to investigate how a child’s or young person’s problem behaviors and protection needs are constructed in judgments relating to 3 § of the care of young people (special provision) act (LVU). In order to answer the purpose of the study the following questions should be asked; what problem behaviors and protection needs are constructed in judgments relating to care under 3 § of the LVU?

A qualitative approach has been used to answer the study’s purpose and questions. The empirical study consists of 33 court judgments between 2012 and 2017 from one specific municipality. The theoretical basis of the study is social constructionism and thematic analysis is used as an analytical tool. The study is analyzed on the basis of social constructivist theory and supported by research from, to name a few, Johanna Schiratzki, Anna Hollander, Astrid Schlytter, Lina Ponnert, Pernilla Leviner and Titti Mattsson.

The results of the study indicate that the problem behavior and protection needs of children and young people are constructed through the LVU-legislation process and that the social construction begins with the Social Welfare Committee's LVU investigation and application for care with the support of LVU. The result also shows that law most often approves of the Social Welfare Committee's application compulsory care. In the empirical material of the study, only two applications were rejected. The study's final chapter discusses the conclusions of the study, but also on further research on the construction of children and young people's problem behavior and protection needs.

En enkätstudie om vårdnadshavares upplevelse av återgivning av dess barns neuropsykiatriska diagnos på BUP i Stockholm2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Family care in Sweden is extensive and possibly expanding. We use representative surveys with caregivers to describe panoramas of care for different recipients. Various types of care often overlap: Other family are the most frequent auxiliary carers, but there is also rather big overlap with public services, and especially for help to someone with extensive needs in another household. Partner carers and others who care for someone in their own household – often for many hours – stand out as a rather isolated but comparatively small group. The article also criticises oversimplified use of demography which suggests a weakened potential for family care.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The link between domestic violence and violence against pets has been a topic in international research over the past two decades. Yet, in Sweden it is a relatively unexplored field that many professionals lack knowledge about. Existing research, however, demonstrates that this link can have serious consequences for people exposed for domestic violence. The purpose of this study is to increase the knowledge of the link between domestic violence and violence against pets, with the ambition that this knowledge will develop the social work with domestic violence victims. To fulfill our purpose we carried out a literature study in which 14 research articles were compiled and analysed, each dealing with the link in question. Our results show that violence against pets can be understood as part of the violence that take place in intimate relationships. This is explained by the emotional attachment that often exists between the domestic violence victim and their pets, an attachment that is being used by the perpetrator to exercise power and control. The results also show that, often, social work practices lack support and protection that include pets, which in turn makes it harder for the victim to walk out of the violent relationship. The reason why researchers as well as social workers have difficulties seeing the link between domestic violence and violence against pets, is explained by the specialisation and professionalisation within the welfare state, which has contributed to a division of different forms of violence. Moreover, the idea that animals are objects rather than individuals in their own right is also an important factor. On the basis of the results of this study, we argue that further research is needed, regarding this link, not least within Sweden. This would make Swedish social work better equipped regarding support and protection for domestic violence victims with pets. We also leave suggestions for future research, as to examine how the link is manifested within other intimate relationships than heterosexual ones and how the experience regarding the link is expressed by domestic violence victims who have yet not seeked professional help.

Anställd i det svenska civilsamhället: engagemang, ansvar och delaktighet2018Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In 2016 a new repayment systems were introduced for communes work to meet the needs of unaccompanied children. The system's intention was to achieve a cost-efficiency and lower government spending in the work with the children. Child-welfare officers work with investigate the needs of the children and grant assistance to ensure that the needs are satisfy. The study search for child-welfare officers experiences of the needs of unaccompanied children, how the economic conditions have affected the work to meet the needs and which effects the new repayment system will have in the work with meeting needs. The collected data consists of nine semistructured interviews with child-welfare officers working with the target group. Urie Bronfenbrenner's theory, developmental ecological perspective has been used as a tool for developing the questionnaire as well as a tool for analyze the empirical data. The result shows, that unaccompanied have an extensive need for safe adults, schooling and the needs are affected by the environment and how laws are formed. Current economic conditions have given possibility for a human approach, but also developed a market were care prices exceeded the quality of the provided care. The new repayment system is designed out of the idea tha unaccompanied children are independent, which affects the possibilities of working with the resource-demanding children. The system can create incentives for communes to place more children according to LVU or equivalent SoL.

    Abstract [sv]

New Deeds for New Needs: Civil Society Action Against Poverty in Sweden2018In: VOLUNTAS - International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Organizations, ISSN 0957-8765, E-ISSN 1573-7888Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The emergence of new types and new levels of poverty in Sweden has spurred civil society organizations to take a more active role in domestic relief work. Their work is not least directed toward groups of poor with limited access to public welfare in Sweden, in most cases because they are not Swedish citizens. The arrival of groups like the vulnerable EU citizens and undocumented refugees has created a situation where civil society provides emergency relief for groups not eligible for long-term relief from the public sector. A new division of responsibility between civil society and the public sector is therefore being formed, and this division can be explained in terms of rights; the aid organizations are guided by the principles of human rights, while the public sector functions primarily according to social citizenship rights. This article documents the work of the Swedish City Missions, a large aid organization that has become an important actor in poverty relief work in Sweden. A never before conducted survey of 137,000 interventions performed by the Swedish City Missions gives an entirely new insight into the significance of civil society organizations in combating new and old types of poverty in Sweden. Which groups receive which types of aid and what does that tell us about the roles of civil society and the public sector in a rights perspective? The findings show that civil society organizations like the City Missions play a far from marginal role in the Swedish welfare state.

    Abstract [en]

This paper explores the complex conditions for generalized

trust in the Indian state of Kerala and the potential role for social

work in improving them. Theory on trust and experiences drawn

from the international research field on trust and social capital are

used to disentangle the social structures and relations that form

and shape generalized trust in Kerala. Special attention is given to

the significance of social and economic equality, ethnic diversity

and justice institutions. It is concluded that Kerala faces several

challenges in addressing the low levels of generalized trust but

also that there are reasons for a cautious optimism, considering

the relatively high levels of trust in institutions and a sub-national

identity that supersedes ethnic divisions. Several constructive

suggestions are also made regarding the role of social work in

relation to generalized trust, addressing among other things the

present problems with corruption and the remittance economy in

    Kerala.

    Abstract [en]

Care at the Central station (“Vård på Centralen”) emerged when refugees arrived at Stockholm Central Station in the autumn of 2015. A single medical student quickly brought together two suitcases with compound articles and non-prescription drugs, and started, together with some friends, to help the arrivals. A few weeks later, the initiative had grown, and hundreds of care-educated volunteers were organized through social media. The result: an organization that was loosely organized, highly professionalized, network-oriented, primarily internet-based, and that met needs possibly beyond the scope of citizenship rights, but within the expectation of human rights. In the present text, we briefly describe and discuss this organization. We argue that in-depth knowledge of this type of organizations may be important in future situations of similar kind.

    Abstract [en]

This longitudinal study shows that scouts have higher incomes than others 14 years after their participation when controlling for social background, sex, and individual cognitive tests. But scouting has no significant effects on future criminality. Social exclusion and criminal behaviour are so marginal that they require more specific types of explanations. The results can be interpreted as signs that taking part in scouts significantly contributes as a step in the social pathway to the upper classes of society. By supporting scouting, the welfare state seems not to prevent problem behaviour but runs the risk of contributing to social stratification.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The Purpose of this studie has been to investigate how the socialworkers professional identity in relation with unaccompanied refugee children, has been effected by amendments of the law. Since several amendments of the law has been in contact with the social work I have chosen SFS 2016:750. With this amendment timelimted residence permits was initiated which limited possibilities for family reuinons with a relative background, in the midst of this the sustention demands was hardened. Eight social workers has been interviewed in a qualitative, semi-structured manner. These social workers has been involved professionally with the target group constisting of unaccompanied refugee children, both prior and after that the amendment of the law was made. The Interviews has then been the foundation of the material that has been analysed with the help of a theorecital frame of reference that is the foundation of the socialworkers professional identity and role, previously conducted research has also been accounted for. The results of the studie concludes that when the prerequesites are changed it also changes the social workers profesional situation, both internally and externally, in regards of the relation between the social worker and the refugee children. Also the private life of the respondends were effected. The result and analysis show that the Professional identity and role got separated when the professional role are changed when SFS 2016:752 was amended. The Professional identity is put to the test and the social workers own ethical compas decides how the social work itself should be performed. Amendments of the law also reflects on the social workers professional work and compensatory strategies are made. The social workers are affected on different levels of health by the consequences that appear in the sitiation, the results of the studie shows that this relates to guidance, empathy managemant and emotional control.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study has been to investigate how the professional relationship between prison officers and youth criminals in prison is perceived and how a professional relationship can be of importance in motivation work with young prisoners. Our ambition has been to achieve a result that can be used in client-focused work with young people in social work. The study was conducted at one of the correctional services (Kriminalvården) departments of youths, which has the task to imprisonment of young people between the ages of 18 and 21 years old. It is a qualitative study conducted with eight semistructured interviews with both staff and young prisoners. The analysis of the study has used three theoretical perspectives; professional relationships, the influence of power and communication theory. Our results has shown that an ambivalent career-role can be challenging in terms of creating relationships and that a relationship becomes a prerequisite for talking about motivation work at all. At the same time, our results show that motivation for change comes from the young prisoners themselves and the staffs role becomes to sow a seed that can grow in the future.

Democratic Values in Lebanon's Segmented Politics2013In: The Arab World Geographer, ISSN 1480-6800, Vol. 16, no 3, p. 313-325Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Lebanon has probably the most open political system in the Arab world. It has a sizeable, although ineffectual, civil society; freedom of expression is not only guaranteed by the constitution but usually exercised without fear of government sanction or intimidation by political rivals. One would therefore expect the Lebanese people to express appreciation for democratic values and to display a propensity for involvement in power sharing and competitive politics. This article asserts, however, that key requisites of democracy, be they attitudinal or behavioural, are weak in Lebanon. The authors argue that severe sectarian rivalry, political uncertainty, and a preoccupation with security and economic concerns coalesce against promoting essential tenets of democracy at the cognitive and evaluative levels. An analysis based on empirical data obtained from the 2008 implementation of the World Values Survey in Lebanon confirms these assumptions: respondents reported greater interest in stabilizing the economy, curbing inflation, and controlling crime than in fostering a society of ideas and granting people a greater say in the Lebanese political system. In fact, more than half of respondents expressed a preference for instituting military rule in the country.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate what family law court secretaries take into consideration in investigations regarding custody where domestic violence and possible mental illness because of the violence are present. Since it is primarily women who experience domestic violence, this study chose to focus on the mothers parenting abilities and her possible mental illness. To answer the study's research questions and purpose the approach was qualitative and the method used was semi-structured interviews. Semi-structured interviews allow a more in depth and nuanced understanding of the social problem which is being studied. The result was interpreted by using thematic analysis and then analyzed through a theoretical framework, which was Marianne Hester's "Three planet model". The theoretical framework consisted of three planets which are called domestic violence, child protection and child contact. The results of this study show that family law secretaries struggle to discern whether domestic violence has occurred or not, since there rarely are any police rapport that supports claims of domestic violence. Regarding the mother's parenting abilities, she is considered not being able to fully parent the child, due to the domestic violence she has been exposed to. Furthermore, the results show that mental illness in investigations of custody focuses on whether the mother is still capable of raising the child. The results also show that mental illness is broad and difficult to define, since the spectrum for mental illness is quite broad.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

When the Health and Human services department in Sweden published a proposition for new national guidelines regarding the care of depression and anxiety disorder in December of 2016 they got a lot of criticism, especially in media, from practitioners in healthcare and social work both national and international. The Health and Human services department has received statements of opinions and are going to publish a final version of the new guidelines in the autumn of 2017. The purpose of this study was to explore which thoughts and ideas there is about how the care for these conditions should be. This study has through a qualitative content analysis looked at all the statements the Health and Human services department has received to answer to the purpose and research different attitudes about the proposition for new guidelines. The statements were processed in different rounds thru a coding system that was inspired from a perspective analysis and a structured categorization. The empirics has been analyzed with a domain theory and make connections to the concept of an evidence-based practice. One limitation with this study is that it is not possible to get to all the attitudes regarding this subject from the sample of the received statements of opinions. The study reach a conclusion that the statements show contrarious opinions which is based on the context the actor is in and that it is a common phenomenon which gives a wider spread of perspectives and contributes to social development. The study also concludes that a lack of diversity of interventions in the guidelines is a substantial flaw and that the trust towards the guidelines and the Health and Human services department is defective which leads to a questioning about the department's competence.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate what role nursing staff have in providing the elderly with opportunities for sexuality while living in retirement homes and how they work issues regarding the sexuality of older people. Our ambition is to find out how nursing staff respond to and deal with issues related to elderly people's sexuality and which possibilities for intimacy there is in retirement homes. To investigate this, we chose to conduct semi-structured qualitative interviews with nursing staff at a number of different retirement homes in Stockholm and surrounding areas. The collected data has then been analyzed using Pierre Bourdieu's theory of field and doxa.

The study's main findings show that elderly people's sexuality is seen as a non-question and therefore not a subject nursing staff actively work with. The study also shows that a prevailing doxa can be located in this field, which in turn affects the treatment given by nursing staff. Nursing staff see elderly people's sexuality as something private and therefore avoids talking about it. Because nursing staff have this view, it also influences what adjustments are made in the physical environment in order for the elderly to experience intimacy and physical proximity. Finally, the study shows that in order to respond to and work with issues related to sexuality, nursing staff must have relevant knowledge which further education in sexology could provide.

    Abstract [en]

A twofold exclusion – interviews about bullying with young people in residential care Youth in residential care are at risk of living in twofold exclusion when stigmatization and bullying in school become part of their everyday life. The article presents results from semi-structured interviews with ten young people in residential care. The young people’s reflections on bullying are analysed in relation to different explanatory models of bullying. Experiences of bullying are very common among youth placed in out of home care, which calls for research on bullying and youth in residential care. The aim of the study was to present understandings of bullying among youth placed in residential care and to investigate why youth in residential care report victimization to a higher degree than young people living at home. The research questions were: 1. What descriptions do young people give of the term bullying? 2. What insights can the young people’s descriptions of bullying give to the high victimization among youth in residential care? 3. How can the young people’s descriptions of bullying be understood in relation to different understandings of bullying? The main findings are the young people’s sense of exclusion. They feel stigmatized due to their placement in care and believe they have to be secretive in school about being placed in care because of the risk of bullying. Three suggestions to decrease the twofold exclusion are presented. 1. Based on knowledge that frequent changes in groups are a risk factor in regard to bullying, placement changes need to be reduced to a minimum. 2. Schools (teachers and pupils) need education concerning care environments. 3. Young people are often placed in care due to behavioural problems and therefore residential units need advantageous conditions to work with the young people’s behaviour on both individual and group level.

Patienters upplevelse av att personal använder egna erfarenheter av ätstörningar som en resurs i vårdarbetet2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The study is about patients' experience of the advantages and disadvantages of staff using their own experience of eating disorders as a resource in the care work. The gathering if empiric was conducted in the form of eight qualitative interviews where the researcher interviewed patients undergoing treatment for eating disorders. All interviewees have previously been in contact with staff who have their own experience of eating disorders. The subject of the study is analyzed based on theoretical themes such as experience knowledge, understanding, treatment, identification, being a role model, over-identification, countertransference and self-disclosure.

The results show that there are several benefits that staff use their own experience of eating disorders. This staff may, among other things, provide a special resource in the field of care, namely experience knowledge, which is a type of knowledge individuals can’t learn by reading, so other staff do not possess this knowledge. Patients also find that staff with their own experiences of eating disorders have a better understanding of their disease situation and can help patients to understand themselves better, by explaining why they think, feel or act in a certain way. Patients also describe that these staff treat them better, in a certain way that they make the patients feel less vulnerable in their care-seeking position and has the ability to see the disease from an individual perspective instead of being based solely on the diagnosis's characteristics. Participants find that they can identify themselves whit the staff's disease experience and travel to recovery, which leads to that the patients more easily receive this personals message. Patients can see employees with their own experience of eating disorders as role models, because they managed to get healthy and resist eating disorders. This staff also has the ability to reduce the patient's sense of shame about the disease, because the employee self has been ill previously.

The study's results also show that there are disadvantages to staff using their own experience of eating disorders in the care word. On disadvantage is when staff work is affected by over-identification, which is expressed in terms of staff assuming things that do not match patient's disease state based on their own disease experiences, which causing the patient to feel frustrated. The countertransference of the staff can also affect how they design the treatment because these personal have an emotional link to the disease, which may result that it is more difficult to make demands to the patient. Patients also describe that staffs’ self-disclosure may adversely affect their treatment if the staff tells something about their own previous disease experience that can give the patient new eating ideas or be triggering. Alternatively, the staff focus too much on telling their own experiences instead of focusing on the patient's treatment. If the self-disclosure of the staff is perceived to be unprofessional in the patient's eyes, it may cause that the patient will be doubtful about their professional competence.

    Abstract [en]

In this study, five people are interviewed who work professionally in activity groups with creative arts as a focus for people with neurodevelopmental disorders (DSM-5) and / or developmental disorder. The purpose of the study is to investigate the professionals' view of creative arts as a method in the work with the target group, and also their view of creative arts linked to the increased requirement for evidence-based practice. The questions of this research therefore intend to provide answers to what functions creative arts as a tool can have in group activities for people with DSM-5 and / or developmental disorder. We also intend to research how we can understand creative arts as a method and if/how the method should be mesured in relation to an increased requirement for evidence-based practice. The result is based on five semi-structured interviews that have been coded and analyzed with phenomenological thematic analysis. The theoretical framework is based on the salutogenic model and Jonna Bornemarks perspective on "measuring the immeasurable".

The method of creative arts is frequently used in group activities for the target group, but at the same time there are deficiencies in the quantitative research bass to support the effects of the method. The respondents argued that the subjective experience of the method is difficult to measure, but that they themselves feel that creative arts has many advantages for the specific target group.

During the study, the respondents described aspects that were well in line with what is included in the salutogenic model. The practitioners expressed that creative arts as a method contributed to community, cognitive reinforcement, increased self-esteem and that it could function as an alternative means of expression.

    Abstract [en]

The aim with this study is to explore and critically examine how people with disabilities as a category are represented and described in the Swedish Culture Committee's evaluation För, med och av - en uppföljning av tillgänglighet inom kulturen (2014). The starting point of the evaluation is the Government's goal for cultural policy and the goals of disability policy regarding issues of accessibility to culture for people with disabilities. The purpose of the study is to show the discourses that dominate in this text regarding the view of disability and to discuss how it effects the target group. We have examined the material using Fairclough's critical discourse analysis as analytical method. Our conclusions are that the Culture Committee clearly follows how the Swedish welfare state talks about people with disabilities - the text is dominated by a legal discourse and an relational model discourse. People with disabilities are mainly described as recipients of culture, rather than as participants and practitioners. The Culture Committee avoids structural explanations to the problem of inaccessible culture for people with disabilities, missing the fundamental conditions that we consider are crucial to address to enable participation in cultural life on an equal footing with others. When the Culture Committee proposes changes, they need to generalize on the basis of a very heterogeneous group of people, which makes it difficult to define what measures are needed in making culture available.

    Abstract [en]

Social service workers seem to be silent in public debate. For the sake of democracy, it is important there is transparency in public administration, hence the silence is problematic. It is also problematic because of the importance that someone – for instance the player with the most competence, experience and expertise in the field – functions as a voice for the vulnerable who may have difficulties making themselves and their needs heard. The aim of this thesis is to show the views of social service workers on potential obstacles for them to comment and debate social issues in public debate. To accomplish this, semi-structured interviews were conducted with six persons working with responsibility for public authority within the social service. From the interviews it appeared that there are things hindering the social service workers to engage in social debate. These obstacles seem to be based on a clash between the authority culture and the ideal of the social worker role. The social worker has from his or her education gained certain professional knowledge but has to, when entering the social service, relate to that knowledge being valued less than the ability to subserve the organization’s way of working and to administer government dictat. From a neo-institutionalism perspective, one explanation for the silence of the social workers is that it is not in the organization’s interest that they should speak publicly. That risks hurting the legitimacy which is a threat to the organization’s very existence. Therefor a non-supporting culture grows where fear and anxiety flourish, and no intelligibility is created about if it is a part of the social service worker’s role to encourage social change also on a structural level. In a ritual socialization process the social service workers internalize the organization’s beliefs. These things contribute to social service workers not commenting on or debating social issues in public debate.

Sexuella övergrepp mot barn i samhällets vård: - Gränser för upprättelse ur ett könsperspektiv2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 210 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Expectations of people’s behavior based on their gender can affect the actions of individuals as well as organizations. In the Swedish process of redress, people who´s been neglected in institutions and foster care 1920-1980 could apply for compensation in SEK 250 000 from the Swedish state. More than 5 000 persons applied for redress and many of those described that they´ve been victims of child sexual abuse (CSA).

This study investigates, from a gender perspective, redress schemes for applicants who`s been victims for CSA in institutional or foster care and where the applicant´s been rejected within the cause that the abuse is not severe enough to give right to compensation. At first the research was made on 1223 of the Redress Boards decisions, from witch, in the research process, applicants with a history of CSA and who’s been denied compensation was sorted out. These decisions are quantitatively presented in relation to the applicant’s gender.

There is also a qualitative analyze of the Redress Boards arguments for rejection for five applicants who describes penetration-like or penetration abuse. The studies result shows that men have not been applicants of redress for CSA in as high grade as women. Another result is that men who’s told the Redress Board about CSA in a higher grade than women has been rejected redress, related to the number of applicants from both genders. Analyzing the arguments for deny shows that the motivation grounds for why the abuse was not considered severe enough are quite unclear for male as well as female applicants.
