    Abstract [en]

Children of Single (Lone) Mothers is a project carried out by Fryshuset, a well-known and entrepreneurial third sector organisation with a wide range of activities within the field of youth policy. This project started with the aim to support and strengthen children living with a single mother in economically vulnerable circumstances. From a health perspective, the focus is on the everyday situation of children and mothers. This represents an example of an innovation initiated within civil society, in line with the traditional role of third sector organisations to be pioneers and to focus attention on new needs and new groups with needs that are not covered in other ways. There are elements of advocacy in this innovation with the aim to raise attention to the issue of child poverty and the situation of unemployed or low-income single mothers. Fryshuset implements this by developing cooperation with different stakeholders and spreads awareness on this subject through these channels.

Folkhögskolan som myt: Om global spridning och användning av nordiska folkbildningsidéer2011In: Pedagogisk forskning i Sverige, ISSN 1401-6788, E-ISSN 2001-3345, Vol. 16, no 1, p. 1-17Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

I artikeln uppmärksammas hur nordiska folkhögskoletankar spridits globalt.

Towards a paradigm of democratic participation: citizen participation and co-production of personal social services in Sweden2009In: Annals of Public and Cooperative Economics, ISSN 1370-4788, E-ISSN 1467-8292, Vol. 80, no 2, p. 197-224Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Many countries in Europe are now searching for new ways to engage citizens and involve the third sector in the provision and governance of social services in order to meet major demographical, political and economic challenges facing the welfare state in the 21st Century. Co-production provides a model for the mix of both public service agents and citizens who contribute to the provision of a public service. Citizen participation involves several different dimensions: economic, social, political and service specific. The extent of citizen participation varies between different providers of welfare services, as too does user and staff influence. Empirical materials from a recent study of childcare in Sweden will be used to illustrate these points. However, the role of citizens and the third sector also varies between countries and social sectors. Third sector providers facilitate citizen participation, while a glass ceiling for participation exists in municipal and for-profit providers. Moreover, co-production takes place in a political context, and can be crowded-in or crowded-out by public policy. These findings can contribute to the development of a new paradigm of participative democracy.

Enriching Work Environment in the Welfare Service Sector: the Case of Social Enterprises in Swedish Childcare2014In: Annals of Public and Cooperative Economics, ISSN 1370-4788, E-ISSN 1467-8292, Vol. 85, no 3, p. 353-370Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Karasak and Theorell's demand/control model for analyzing work environment posits a high degree of both demands and control for active or good working conditions, while stress occurs when demands are plentiful, but there are few possibilities of control. This article addresses a significant increase of work-related demands for the employees of the public sector in Sweden. It also explores the potential contribution of social enterprises to enrich work environment and provide ‘good work’. The empirical data was taken from two separate studies of work environment at Swedish childcare facilities, one from 1994–95 and another from 2006–07. The article shows that work environment conditions changed radically about 20 years ago and that the effects are still apparent today. The results also show, however, that small, social enterprises continue to offer a better work environment than public facilities.

Att vetenskapliggöra drogpolitik: En analys av hur IOGT-NTO använder vetenskap i organisationens politiska program (1989-2015)2016Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

I sex kapitel diskuterar Jenny Madestam, Johan von Essen, Aron Schoug, Lena Wilhelmson, Karin Robertsson, Johan Hvenmark, Fredrik O. Andersson och Ola Segnestam Larsson förtroendevalda utifrån olika perspektiv.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine to what extent and how civil society organizations ambitions to influence young people's attitudes and values are conducted with the support from science and research.

Three research questions guide the study: what stages in the ambitions are influenced by science, what forms of science are used, and how the use of science can be interpreted in this context. The empirical material consists of four case studies of civil society organizations using science and research in their ambitions to change young people's attitudes to alcohol and drugs.

Empirical and analytical results indicate that civil society organizations use science and research mainly in a rhetorical sense, and that the use in practice is debatable, where the number of references to research and researchers are limited.

An alternative interpretation of the significance of science is that it functions as yet another arena for negotiation, debate and conflict between the temperance movement and the alcohol industry regarding the use of alcohol and drugs.

Standardizing Civil Society: Interpreting Organizational Development in the Tension Between Instrumentalism and Expressivism2011Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This book focuses on empirical phenomenon of organizational development, which seems to be trusted as the solution to many problems in civil society and the key to ‘the good society’. But can organizational development fulfil such expectations?

As civil society becomes increasingly prominent in local struggles, national debates, and international politics, scholars are paying attention to how it should be promoted and developed. One approach deployed to foster a vibrant civil society is organizational development. In addition to improved project and organizational performance, it is believed that more and better organizing will promote desirable qualities inherent in civil society and therefore the development of a good society.

In this book the author questions if organizational development within civil society can fulfil such expectations. Drawing on institutional theory and studies of cooperation among trade unions, faith-based organizations, and organizations of people with disabilities, he argues that organizational development of civil society organizations was never meant for implementa- tion. Instead it serves more as a legitimacy device for the involved actors in addition to protecting organizational praxis from conflicting internal and external demands.

Making volunteering economically valuable: the relationship between valuation devices and volunteering2017In: Voluntary Sector Review, ISSN 2040-8056, Vol. 8, no 3, p. 235-250Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article contributes to previous research on determining the economic value of volunteering by analysing the relationship between the valuation devices being proposed and volunteering and its properties. Is the relationship best characterised as direct, mediated or imposed? The empirical material for the article consists of volunteering economic valuation devices, as presented in previous research, which are analysed with a framework derived from the theoretical field of valuation. In addition to introducing the analytical framework and its application to the field of volunteering, the article discusses the absence of direct relationships while underscoring the dominance of the mediated relationship. It also argues that the imposed relationship highlights a hitherto less-discussed analytical dimension in the research debate on valuing volunteering. In conclusion, the relevance of the findings are discussed and ideas for a future research agenda presented.
