"Man får en ganska rejäl ... reality check!": En kvalitativ studie av socialarbetares erfarenheter från sina första två år som yrkesverksamma2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

The aim of this study has been to investigate how a few newly graduated social workers have experienced their first two years as professionals. The main focus has been on how they view their work environment, how they reflect on discretion and agency in practicing social work and how the participants perceive the role of the social work programme in preparing them for their professional life. I have used a qualitative method doing semi- structured interviews with seven social workers.

The result of this study shows that out of seven participants, only one remains at the same work place as after graduating. Four out of seven have experienced work-related health issues like stress and fatigue syndrome which have led to sick leave some time during their first two years as qualified social workers. That result corresponds to other findings, both national and international.

Most respondents feel that they have a rather large area of discretion in their profession but that the level of agency is largely related to organisational issues, for example how well the leadership at the work place functions. All respondents claim resource shortage as a central factor in how they view their work environment and how well they manage to perform their work duties. Another area that affects satisfaction in the work situation is whether the respondents feel that they have found ways to create a healthy balance between work and private life and also if the workplace itself offers a balance between demand, control and support.

Furthermore, another important factor that affects job satisfaction is whether there is room for personal and professional development at the workplace.

Several of the respondents view social work practice during the studies as very valuable in giving them a good ground for future work experience. Some believed the placement period should be extended or occur twice during the social work programme. Many respondents say that they would have liked to have more practical training in communication methods like motivational interviewing (MI).

“Women, you know that women they are very easy to deceive … ”: understandings of women's role in witchcraft-related violence among community groups and social workers in southern Nigeria and handling of such violence.2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to explore how social workers and community groups in southern Nigeria understand and interpret women's roles in witchcraft related violence and the implications those views have on the handling of such violence. This topic is of relevance for social work since knowledge about this problem can increase the awareness of violence and its implications when meeting clients that are exposed to it.

The study was conducted with an ethnographical approach using a combination of participant observations, semi structured and un-structured forms of interviews’ and seven focus group discussions. Four of the focus groups consisted of social workers who work with empowerment and advocacy for women and girls in Edo-state. The other three were made up of locals in a suburb of Benin City. In this study, I used Clifford Geertz (1973) interpretive anthropology as a comprehensive theory in analysing the results and the theoretical concepts from Mann Huyng Hurs (2006) theory on stages of Empowerment; an existing social disturbance, Conscientizing, Mobilizing, Maximizing and creating a new order.

The results of this study show that understandings and interpretations of women’s role in witchcraft-related violence by the participating social workers and community members influences their views on what is to be considered violence and who are to be considered victims. Their views also influence their containment strategies and approaches on how to handle this violence.

Hur familjerättssekreterare arbetar med medling inom samarbetssamtal: en kvalitativ intervjustudie2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: In recent years cooperation discussions between parents has increased in Sweden. The family law secretaries work daily with cooperation discussions in order to bring disagreeing and disputant parents towards working together regarding issues concerning their children. Cooperation discussions should be given under both professional and competent guidance by mediators with adequate education. That is why it is important, as a mediator, to possess knowledge about models of conflict resolution, mediation theory and about how to manage conflicts. And to, in the best way possible, lead a cooperation discussion as a mediator.

Aim: The aim of this study is to understand how family law secretaries work with mediation within cooperation discussion, based on transformative theory.

Method: A qualitative interview study was made in which five family law secretaries were interviewed.

Results: The results are based and presented on two themes that could be distinguished out of the interviews. Within the theme The role of the mediator, different factors that the family law secretaries found important in the role of being a mediator within cooperation discussions are presented. Within the theme The use of mediation methods within cooperation discussions, the family law secretaries own thoughts of how they use mediation methods within cooperation discussions are presented.

Conclusion: The family law secretaries work differently when it comes to using mediation methods within cooperation discussions. They describe that their work is based on a mixture of multiple mediation methods. Through the way that the family law secretaries describe how they work within cooperation discussion, it is made clear that they all work with transformative mediation.

Discussion: Even if the family law secretaries explain that they do not use any given mediation method, the transformative method was recognized in the way they describe their work. Might they be unaware of that they may be working with different mediation methods? Approaches like the solution-focused brief therapy can also be tied to the family law secretaries work with cooperation discussions.

    Abstract [en]

This qualitative study aimed to examine the experiences of what it is like to have grown up with a parent who has bipolar disorder, with help from interviews of six people. Together with Bronfenbrenners ecological systems theory the results have been analysed with the concept “risk- and protective factors”. What came out of the result and analysis was that being a child of a parent with bipolar disorder was featured by ambivalent emotions and instability, at the same time as there was safety in the shape of another guardian. Rarely or never were there any support beyond the other parent and no help from society was offered these children during either their childhood or youth. Everyone who participated in the study expressed that they felt the need to have been seen somehow and that as adults they wished that they had gotten some sort of counselling to be able to understand and process their parent´s disorder, since this affected their childhood vigorously. The experiences were also that the childhood had affected the participants adulthood in different ways and often in a negative direction. During the interviews though, the participants expressed that they were now in a place in life where they wanted to be and that some of them even felt strengthened by their childhood.

"Gilla läget": En studie av rådgivningslitteratur om åldrande2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study is to gain an increased understanding of how school counselors think about the use of methods in the school-based work. Based on the purpose of the study, I wanted to find out what methods the interviewed school counselors use in their work, how they look at sources of knowledge in the choice of methods and how they look at the need for further training on methods. The study has a qualitative approach based on five interviews with four school counselors in elementary school and a school counselor at a secondary school from three cities in Sweden. The main results of the study show that school counselors use different types of methods used to drive their school-based work forward, these are; Call methods such as MI, treatment methods such as KBT and various methodologies such as ABC used in conflict management. However, it is also apparent that, as a school counselor, you have a mindset that allows you to apply these methods in an unexplored way by feeling in the mood, mixing methods and trying out without looking at the effects of the methods. The result of the study also shows that research as a source of knowledge in choosing a method is important and it is stated that one works in evidence-based practice which, according to them, is desirable, but according to their stories, it does not appear in practice. This is partly because of the lack of reflection on the effects of methods, and that one chooses not to take time for further training on methods, which an evidence-based practice requires when you have an awareness of the methods used and the effects they have. This approach may pose a risk to the development of the pupil concerned. Finally, the results of the study show that employers do not encourage further education on methods that the school counselors had desired, but at the same time, the school counselors state that it is a priority issue, thinking that the student goes before the need for knowledge about the methods used in school-based work.

Can participants predict where ambulance-requiring cases occur at a half marathon?2018In: Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports, ISSN 0905-7188, E-ISSN 1600-0838, Vol. 28, no 12, p. 2760-2766Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

OBJECTIVES: Despite endurance races leading to a substantial number of ambulance-requiring cases (ARC), little is known regarding where they occur, meaning that knowing where to place medical teams, ambulance pick-up points, etc, is difficult. This article investigates whether the location of ARCs can be identified by race participants.

METHODS: Using the world's largest half marathon (Gothenburg half marathon) as a case, 237 runners were asked, post-race, to mark on a map which geographical point of the race was most exhausting. Using the level of agreement tests, these geographical points were then compared with the GPS positions of ARCs.

RESULTS: According to the level of agreement tests, the most exhausting positions (MEP), as identified by participants, seem to be highly correlated to the location of ARCs. This study can also show that ambulance-requiring cases seem to be more prevalent towards the end of the race and in uphill sections.

CONCLUSIONS: By asking participants where they found the race most exhausting it seems possible to identify high-risk places for an ARC. From a practical perspective, using this method could considerably increase the safety of competitors as well as improving the cost-effectiveness of safety interventions at endurance races. Further studies are needed to understand the specific risk factors of the high-risk areas as well as characteristics of collapsed runners.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study has been to examine, from a communication and relational perspective, the experiences of social workers professional dialog with clients through telephone and place interpreters. The study has an abductive and qualitative method approach and the study's empirical data has been collected through eight individual semi-structured interviews with social workers, working at the children's and youth unit and family law in Stockholm and the surrounding area. All respondents have experience of telephone and located interpreted meetings in their work. The empirics that have been collected have been analyzed on the basis of a thematic method of analysis and have been interpreted through a hermeneutic interpretation theory. The study takes off from communication and relational theoretical point of view. The result shows that the professional dialog where an interpreter is present differs in most consideration, it can be difficult to relate to a third party, since the social worker and interpreter may have expectations of the dialog that do not match and that the visibility of the dialog is limited, when the social worker does´t have full control over the content of the conversation. Nonverbal communication proves to be extremely important and the study points to the many challenges and disadvantages of using telephone interpreters. The study further shows that it is of great importance that the social worker and interpreter establish a cooperation and a relationship between each other in order to enable a successful professional dialog. Finally, we have concluded that communication between the parties does not take place in a linear process, between transmitter and receiver, but that communication is more complex than that.

Titel: Working on the same conditions - A case study on the role of social workers and the ability to influence within the cross-professional teamwork in a healthcare organization.

The purpose of this study has been to describe and understand the role and influence of social workers in the cross-professional teamwork within a healthcare organization. The study has been conducted as a case study with qualitative semistructured interviews with seven professionals in the organization, three of which are social workers. The material has been analyzed using previous research and through a theoretical reference framework where I chose to use three key concepts; role, influence and teamwork. Previous research shows that the legitimacy of the social worker is low in comparison to other professions in healthcare, which is also affected by the fact that members of other professions find it hard to understand what the role of social work within health care is. Social workers have in several studies indicated that they feel a need to defend their social position. Research has also shown that many state that it is the physician in the team who determines the working climate and ability to jointly respect the occupational groups. The result of this study shows an organization where the cross-professional work is part of the very essence of the business. Social workers have the same opportunity for influence within the organization as other professions, and is valued based on the unique knowledge that forms an essential part of the business. The role of the social worker is also clear to other teammembers. Therefore this study shows an organization in which the role and opportunity of influence for social workers is affected very positively in relation to previous research. The study also shows that there are challenges in the organization's activities. These concern issues of stress and to have sufficient capacity, which informants realate to a company in rapid development.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to increase knowledge about how social workers perceive their discretion and how they use it. Previous research has shown difficulties for social workers in making decisions within a framework legislation in combination with wide discretion. Current knowledge shows a gap when it comes to what factors the social worker’s decisions are based on, especially his/her own values and norms. The study has an abductive approach and has been conducted through semi-structured interviews. In total, nine social workers have been interviewed. They were employed by either Nacka or Stockholm municipalities. The results of the interviews are presented thematically and the analysis is based on Michael Lipsky’s theory on street level bureaucrats. The theory explains the role of the social worker of being, on the one hand, a representative of an organisation and, on the other hand, on the side of each individual. The results show that the respondents see possibilities in legislation and that legislation gives space for individual assessments. This can be viewed as the social workers’ work being strongly regulated at the same time as the street level bureaucrat has possibilities to act within the room of legislation. Furthermore, the results show that the social workers do not consider economical factors in their decision making as they put the responsibility on the manager. Moreover, the results show that the social worker has personal strategies, norms and values that are of importance when making decisions. This can be viewed as the social worker compensating for faults in the organisation’s guidelines and policies.

Needs asessment practice within elder care: does length of work experience make a difference in how care managers percieve professional discretion?2018In: 8th European Conference for Social Work Research: Book of Abstracts, Edinburgh: University of Edinburgh , 2018, p. 151-151, article id Abstract ID: 444Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This presentation departs from the ongoing debate about how care managers - who often function as ‘street level bureaucrats’ – perceive different aspects of professional discretion in needs assessment practice. Few studies within gerontological social work today have explored if length of work experience affect how care managers experience discretion in the decision-making process which is why this paper focuses on this. The presentation is based on a study that uses focus group interviews (n=12) with 60 care managers in Sweden. The findings show that care managers struggle with ambiguous expectations in balancing clients’ needs and requests against organizational systems, local guidelines and resources. Length of work experience seems to play a role in how they use their discretion and cope with the lack of clarity embedded in the needs assessment process. Experienced care managers describe how they deviate from the guidelines and in this way create an increased scope of action for themselves in decision making. Those with less time in the profession describe, greater difficulties in this respect. The results partially support the critical debate that professional discretion can be experienced in different ways by ‘street level bureaucrats’. The study also adds knew knowledge to this discussion by showing that length of work experience and other work experience-related aspects can play a role in the actual way in which care managers reason about and assess clients’ needs in the decision making process.

Professional discretion and length of workexperience: what findings from focus groups withcare managers in elder care suggest2018In: Journal of Social Work Practice, ISSN 0265-0533, E-ISSN 1465-3885, Vol. 32, no 2, p. 153-167Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Research has explored how care managers in elder care – who often function as ‘street-level bureaucrats’ – regard professional discretion. The way in which length of work experience affects care managers’use of professional discretion remains, however, unexplored. This article present findings from 12 focus groups with 60 care managers. By bringing attention to how care managers experience the needs assessment process, this article sheds light on how these ‘street-level bureaucrats’ struggle when they try to balance their clients’ needs against institutional frameworks and local guidelines. Length of work experience seems to play a role in how care managers claim to use professional discretion. Experienced care managers describe how they deviate from the guidelines at times in order to create an increased scope of action in their decision-making process. Those with less time in the profession describe greater difficulties in this respect. Findings suggest that research should explore if length of work experience plays a role in the actual way in which care managers assess needs and make decisions. As such, they contribute to our understanding of how needs assessment processes are navigated by professionals while also pointing towards the nature of professional discretion in gerontological social work.

Måltidens sociala betydelse inom äldreomsorgen: en intervjustudie2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The study examines whether the legal status of children is important in order to achieve protection within Sweden’s jurisdiction. The study also analyzes how the Swedish child protection legislation relates to European law and the articles of the Convention of the Rights of the Child and if the regulations make a difference between children. Finally, we investigate how children of vulnerable EU citizens are dealt with in case law. The underlying component of the study consists of four studied cases from different administrative courts and courts of appeal in Sweden that were relevant to the study’s questions. The study material is analyzed on the basis of a jurisprudence method in which traditional legal sources have been combined with legal analysis to explain the content of the law and interpret the legislation as well as to investigate possible ambiguities and inconsistencies in the design of legislation. The study shows that the social services’ responsibility for protecting children based on their legal status is complicated due to ambiguity in the country’s jurisdiction, as well as differences in how children of vulnerable EU citizens are handled in case law, as Swedish and international human rights law leave room for interpretation. The study also shows that the Swedish Child Protection Act, in relation to the articles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, is limited by the Court’s interpretation of the child’s domicile. The study’s conclusions are that there are ambiguities and imprecisions between Swedish and foreign legislation. The consequence of this is that children in need of protection will not have their fundamental rights respected since the jurisdiction of the Court in Sweden is unclear and complicated, as there are no guiding rulings from higher judicial authorities.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of our study is to investigate childrens’ participation in decision-making processes concerning supervised meetings between parents and children in at-risk families. Earlier research in the same field shows major shortcomings regarding the extent to whichchildren are involved in the decision-making process in these cases. The method we’ve used to conduct our study is through semi structured interviews with seven family law secretaries -all of them with experience from working with supervised meetings betweenparents and their children -working in different family law units in Stockholm, and our study can therefore be regarded as qualitative.

Our essay starts with descriptions of supervised meetings between parents and children. It then delves into what actual rights children really have, to take part in decisions that affect their own lives. A number of earlier studies in the same field are then presented, as well as a study on childrens’ participation in child protection cases. Finally a study on childrens’ own views and feelings concerning their participation in supervised meeting cases. The collected empirical data is analysed using Roger Hart’s ”Ladder of participation”(1992), Harrys Shier’s ”Pathways to participation”(2001) and Nick Lee ́s childhood sociological perspective of becoming and being. We have also chosen to analyse our empirical data with the help of previous studies.

The results are similar to previous studies presented in our essay: children are generally not allowed to take part in these important decisions to the extent that they should be, according to the United nation Children ́s convention on the rights of the child (2009) articel 12.1. Furthermore, as seen in previous studies, our results show that the adult perspective in the implementation of the supervised meeting cases is more taken into account than the child perspective.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study has been to investigate whether therapists in primary care adapt the CBT method to the patient group with autism spectrum disorders, ASD or intellectual disability, ID. We have chosen to find out if there is clarity about the distribution of responsibilities in the care system about where the patient group should turn when the need for care in depression and anxiety syndrome arises. The survey was conducted through qualitative semi-structured interviews based on an inductive approach with six respondents with different professional roles. Four out of six respondents are therapists who are educated in CBT with at least “step 1 education”. The other two respondents are a doctor in the field of habilitation and an employee National Board of Health and Welfare working on developing national guidelines.

Each respondent had an important part in answering the study's questions. All people interviewed are employed in Stockholm.

The interviews have resulted in interesting information and multifaceted perspectives for the study. The results have further been analyzed based on previous research and theoretical views where Empowerment theory have been chosen as a central point of view.

The majority of respondents claim that the CBT method can be applied to people with ASD aswell to people with ID if changes are made according to the person’s individual care need. Another important aspect for successful therapy is a functioning network of coordinated support outside the therapy room.

The study led us across valuable information about who is responsible for our chosen patient group when it comes to treatment of depression and anxiety syndrome.

The phenomenon refers to uncertainties in the distribution of responsibilities in the health care system, which resulted in different interpretations of guidelines. We decided on a deeper examination of that phenomenon and therefore contacted the National Board of Health and the Habilitation Physician who confirmed that knowledge gaps exist in this area.

    Abstract [en]

This study analyzes the reporting on domestic violence in the mass media. Or more specific: how women exposed to domestic violence are constructed. The research is based on articles in the daily press and one professional journal for social work. The articles are processed with hermeneutic textual analysis. The analysis focuses on how women exposed to domestic violence are constructed based on social constructionism and theories of power orders. The result from the articles reveals that women exposed to domestic violence are represented as the other by being called the woman in a definite article. Furthermore, the perspective of the "younger" woman dominates. Finally, the study shows that women exposed to domestic violence are reduced to victims of physical and sexual violence.

Unga transpersoners upplevelse av bemötandet hos hbtq-certifierade och hbtq-diplomerade ungdomsmottagningar2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to increase knowledge about how young transgender people experience the treatment at youth guidance centers which have a lgbtq-certification. Because in Sweden transgender people have bad experience with the treatment from the staff, especially in health care centers such as the youth guidance center, and even at centers which have a lgbtq-certification. Previous research in, both Sweden and other countries, show that transgender people, in contact with the health care and other social work centers, have experienced discrimination, questioning and lack of knowledge which on these occasions they needed to teach the staff about lgbtq-issues. Because of this kind of bad treatment transgender people have lost trust in health care centers and don’t dare to seek help. These studies have even shown that other transgender people have experienced good treatment when the staff have respected them and accepted their gender identity. This is a qualitative study, based on semi-structured interviews that have been made through the phone with six persons who identify as transgender but have different definitions about their gender identity. They have been in contact with youth guidance centers which have a lgbtq-certification one or several years before this study was done. This study has been made with inductive method where a theory has been chosen from the data. The theory which has been chosen is recognition, which is about when an individual’s identity is being recognized or morally hurt. The conclusion is that young transgender people have different experiences of treatment at the youth guidance centers. Many of them have experienced a good treatment where the staff have shown concern, respect, acceptance and understanding for their gender identity. Some of them have experienced bad treatment where the staff have presumed their gender, misgendering and questioning. Some staff have lack of knowledge in trans-issues but some of them have treated the young transgender people with respect. It seems that the most important thing for transgender people is that the staff treat them with respect, more based upon their values rather than their knowledge.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to describe care managers’ experiences of assessment process in care measures for elderly, focusing on the relatives’ influence. The study was carried out with five care managers in Stockholm city through qualitative semi-structured interviews. The study´s empirical data was analysed with Lipsky’s theory of freedom of action and concepts of power such as; structural power, intentional power and normative power.

The conclusion of our study is that care managers’ freedom of action is limited by both budget demands and how the services unit decides to organize itself. Law, guidelines, budget and the superior managers’ opinions affect how the care managers are expected to execute their work in the assessment process. The result of our interviews about the relatives’ influence and participation in the assessment process show that care managers are influenced by structural power, intentional power and normative power.

The care managers’ experience of the relatives’ participation in the assessment process was both positive and negative. The relatives are most often helpful in describing the elderly’s need of help in the assessment process. The study’s interviewed persons show that the relatives are the ones appealing against the decision. What the care managers considered as negative with the relatives’ participation was that some relatives assertively questioned the care managers’ decision. In some specific cases, the relatives contacted the care managers’ supervisors when they did not agree with the decision.

Furthermore, the care managers experience that the relatives are essential in highlighting the elderly's need of help in the assessment process, specially in the cases in which the elderly has a dementia disease and has difficulties in perceiving their need of help.

Since the elderly´s relatives participate in the assessment process, the care managers experience that they need to consider them as an additional party to the case of the assessment process.

    Abstract [en]

This investigation will examine, through audits of court protocols, and its motivational reasons, how enforcement measures are applied in the event of abuse under the LVM legislation. To try to find the underlying and also the case-formulated formulations that justify the Swedish state, through its municipalities' social services and administrative rights, to the detention of the individual's detention and coercion for citizens. Is not it the free citizen's right to live his life as it wishes even if it is  considered a destructive delivery?

The empirin is built on the basis of the discourses exposed to the investigation. The intention of compiling the different discourses and concepts contained in these court decisions is to provide insight into an activity that surely passes the public when it comes to such a peripheral group of people as well as to demonstrate critical thinking about the phenomenon and finally suggest a change of the phenomenon

    Abstract [en]

The present study has investigated how people who committed crimes are portrayed in media discourses in five articles published in the newspaper Aftonbladet. The purpose of the study is to contribute knowledge about how people who have committed crimes are portrayed in media discourses and try to understand the essay's examples of representations based on a social constructivist approach. Through this, the study wants to increase social workers' awareness of these representations. It is a qualitative study based on Håkan Jönsson's problem perspective and his analysis scheme. This type of method can be compared to discourse analysis. When the study material was processed, a result emerged that we found interesting to analyse based on the theories of stigma and language as a system. The conclusions drawn by the study are that the presentation in media discourses of persons who have committed crimes is partly negative, in four of the five articles. Instead, the fifth article portrays people who have committed crimes as, among other things, wilful. Another conclusion is that these representations can be understood as a part of a possible stigmatizing of people who have committed crimes and that language can have a contributing part in this stigma. In the fifth article that did not portray people who committed a crime in a negative way, we can see an attempt lifting the stigma of the group. These conclusions are then discussed in relation to the current state of knowledge that includes research on the media and its impact on society has evolved over time, how the media and democracy coexist, how people who have committed crimes are treated in the Swedish labour market, and a similar study on the media's presentation of another socially vulnerable group.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

This study is about the work of the social services and the assessment of the risk of continued gender-based violence. The purpose of the study is to investigate what is needed to carry out a risk assessment with high validation of continued gender-based violence within the Social Services. Based on the purpose of the study, four issues have been raised regarding what is needed to carry out a risk assessment with high validation, the use of method / tools, the underlying knowledge (education) and work experience and the professional's own confidence in his risk assessment.

The method used in this study is quantitative in the form of a survey study. In order to get answers to these questions, a survey study was conducted and sent out to professional socialworkers. The study has chosen to target practitioners who work with gender-based violence and who investigate the risk of continued violence. The questionnaire was sent to all 26 municipalities in Stockholm County and was also left open for the opportunity for other municipalities outside Stockholm County to respond. The survey's answers were then summarized using the SurveyMonkey program for best results.

The results of the survey have been analyzed based on the theory of street-level bureaucracy and ecological systems theory. The survey showed that the majority of administrators worked between 6-15 years in social work and 0-5 years in social services. 99% of the respondents completed the NCK web course on violence in close relation, which is considered relevant to their current target group. The majority of respondents use the standardized assessment method called FREDA. Knowingly, the minority of respondents had undergone some form of college education in violence in close relation. All respondents replied that they use some kind of tool to make a good assessment of the risk of violence in close relation and the majority believe that what is needed to carry out a good risk assessment is work experience, special knowledge in violence in close relation and an assessment instruments, in this case FREDA.

What the study discusses based on its conclusions are the most important results that are considered to answer the essay's questions. The study discusses the limitations, shortcomings and difficulties of the survey. The study was concluded with questions for further research.

Tenant by the sea: Tenants´ associations in the industrialized port city of Gothenburg 1900-19502018In: URBAN RENEWAL AND RESILIENCE: CITIES IN COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE, Rom: EAUH , 2018, Vol. 14Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The port city of Gothenburg, Sweden, experienced massive social changes during the 19th century. Gothenburg became an important industrial center and the population multiplied tenfold. The urbanization process led to friction as the amount of factory workers rapidly increased. Together with other groups, such as clerks and small shop-owners, the workers formed a distinct popular class culture with organizational expressions and collective mobilization that changed the social and political order of the city forever. One of these expressions was the tenants´ associations, local organizations that were formed to further the tenants claims against their landlords and to advocate political reforms benefitting for the benefit of the tenants. These organizations, seen as a sort of trade unions for the rented home, rapidly grew in the mid-war period. Tenants´ associations advocated protective legislature for tenants and confronted landlords, both with legal mains and with militant methods such as rent strikes and blockades. The associations were also important in the social life of the working-class communities, organizing studies, social events and summer activities for children. This paper examines the role of the tenants´ association in the everyday life of the Gothenburg neighborhoods and especially the role of the associations in bringing different groups of workers, such as port and factory workers, together. By looking at the tenant movement of Gothenburg and comparing it to similar movements in other cities, such as Glasgow, I hope to show how the geographical and social context in the rapidly changing city of Gothenburg produced organizations that both showed remarkable similarities and notable differences to collective action organizations elsewhere.

Chronic pain and sex-differences; women accept and move, while men feel blue.2017In: PLoS ONE, ISSN 1932-6203, E-ISSN 1932-6203, Vol. 12, no 4, article id e0175737Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to explore differences between male and female patients entering a rehabilitation program at a pain clinic in order to gain a greater understanding of different approaches to be used in rehabilitation.

METHOD: 1371 patients referred to a specialty pain rehabilitation clinic, completed sociodemographic and pain related questionnaires. They rated their pain acceptance (CPAQ-8), their kinesiophobia (TSK), the impact of pain in their life (MPI), anxiety and depression levels (HAD) and quality of life scales: the SF-36, LiSat-11, and the EQ-5D. Because of the large sample size of the study, the significance level was set at the p ≤.01.

RESULTS: Analysis by t-test showed that when both sexes experience the same pain severity, women report significantly higher activity level, pain acceptance and social support while men report higher kinesiophobia, mood disturbances and lower activity level.

CONCLUSION: Pain acceptance (CPAQ-8) and kinesiophobia (TSK) showed the clearest differences between men and women. Pain acceptance and kinesiophobia are behaviorally defined and have the potential to be changed.

    Abstract [en]

My study investigated how young adult women give meaning to the concept of anxiety. In interviews, the respondents talked about their diverse experiences of the concept of anxiety, after which I made a narrative analysis of their stories. In the previous research chapter, i developed studies that examined the relationship between young women's identity and what was normal or deviating in relation to their experience of the concept of anxiety. I have looked at how the concept of anxiety was produced through modern history from a Swedish and international perspective. As theoretical explanatory models for my study, I have looked at theories of female identity creation based on mental ill-health and theories about the woman as a social construction. My data collection has been through semi-structured interviews about eight respondents. The collected empirical evidence showed that the concept of anxiety has a meaning that is not always clear to the world.

    Abstract [en]

Families lacking adequate housing are increasingly becoming a concern for social services throughout Sweden, challenging a key promise of the social democratic universalist welfare-state. This raises questions about experiences of parenthood under the threat of facing homelessness or while living in temporary and inadequate residence in the Swedish context. A qualitative, explorative interview study among parents without access to the housing market and housed by social services is proposed for this investigation. Interview-analysis using an inductive thematic framework-based model with content-analysis and interpretation suggests that the sample groups perceptions of reality revolves around four main interconnected themes or categories; housing history, mental processes, child-parent relationship, adaptation. These categories each accommodates subthemes such as process, exclusion, depression, repetitive thinking, closeness. Participants housing history is viewed as a process encompassing experiences of inadequacy and their mental processes seems to be dominated by different dimensions and levels of stress, depression and cognitive malfunctioning associated with future plans and living space. The study indicates that these experiences forge a strong and close parent-child relationship and seems to affect participants’ way of viewing their position in society. Observing the results through a theoretical lens concludes that concepts drawn from systems theory, social constructivist ideas such as social representation and positioning theory widens our understanding of how participants situation.

Results are also in line with previous qualitative as well as quantitative studies, and can be used to construct concepts and hypothesises regarding identity, class, exclusion and family relations that needs to be tested in further research. Finally, results suggest a careful approach within a social work context towards families living under studied living conditions. It seems pivotal to be aware of how unstable housing can affect mental processes, self-identity and family relationships but keeping in mind that these individual factors are linked to societal structures that lie at the core of homeless or at risk homeless parents’ situation.

    Abstract [en]

Law (1990: 52) with special provisions for the care of young people (LVU) provides legal requirements that should be met when applying the law. The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyze LVU judges in two different counties based on section 3 in LVU. The investigation includs four judgments from Stockholm's Administrative Court and four judgments from Uppsala's Administrative Court. The judgement elected for this study were based on Section 3 of the LVU, primarily to be able to analyze the three requisits in the law: abuse, crime and other socially degrading behavior. The judgments were based on all the props contained in the LVU. The method used in the study was a content analysis, in the form of a text analysis. The result of the study shows that there are gender-specific differences in the judgments examined.

    Ideologi i rörelse2018Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Making volunteering economically valuable: the relationship between valuation devices and volunteering2017In: Voluntary Sector Review, ISSN 2040-8056, Vol. 8, no 3, p. 235-250Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article contributes to previous research on determining the economic value of volunteering by analysing the relationship between the valuation devices being proposed and volunteering and its properties. Is the relationship best characterised as direct, mediated or imposed? The empirical material for the article consists of volunteering economic valuation devices, as presented in previous research, which are analysed with a framework derived from the theoretical field of valuation. In addition to introducing the analytical framework and its application to the field of volunteering, the article discusses the absence of direct relationships while underscoring the dominance of the mediated relationship. It also argues that the imposed relationship highlights a hitherto less-discussed analytical dimension in the research debate on valuing volunteering. In conclusion, the relevance of the findings are discussed and ideas for a future research agenda presented.
