Meanings of becoming and being burnout--phenomenological-hermeneutic interpretation of female healthcare personnel's narratives.2008In: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences, ISSN 0283-9318, E-ISSN 1471-6712, Vol. 22, no 4, p. 520-8Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The incidence of burnout has increased in many industrialized countries. Burnout is mainly studied among people still at work and with quantitative methods. The present study aimed to illuminate the meanings of becoming and being burnout as narrated by healthcare personnel on sick leave because of symptoms of burnout. Interviews with 20 female healthcare personnel were performed, tape-recorded and transcribed verbatim and a phenomenological-hermeneutic method was used to interpret the text. The result shows that the meanings of becoming and being burnout are to be torn between what one wants to be and what one manages. It is as one's ideals have become more like demands and no matter the circumstances, one must be and show oneself as being capable and independent. It is also to be dissatisfied with oneself for not living up to one's ideals as well as disappointed with other people for not giving the confirmation one strives for. Feelings of being a victim of circumstances emerge. Thus, becoming and being burnout is leading a futile struggle to live up to one's ideal, failing to unite one's ideal picture with one's reality and experiencing an overwhelming feebleness. This is interpreted in the light of Buber's philosophy as well as relevant empirical studies about burnout. One conclusion is that it seems important to reflect on as well as discuss between one another about our everyday reality; what are reasonable vs. unreasonable demands. Hopefully, such reflections will increase our tolerance of ourselves and others and our insightfulness of what is possible to achieve in work as well as in private life. This study is ethically approved.

Personality traits among burnt out and non-burnt out health-care personnel at the same workplaces: a pilot study2009In: International Journal of Mental Health Nursing, ISSN 1445-8330, E-ISSN 1447-0349, Vol. 18, no 5, p. 336-348Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Stress-related illnesses, such as burnout, have increased over the last decade, but not everyone at the same workplace develops burnout, suggesting that individual factors may contribute to this phenomenon. The aim of this study was to describe patterns of personality traits among two groups of health-care personnel from the same workplaces, one group on sick leave due to medically-assessed burnout, and one group with no indication of burnout, respectively. Fourteen psychiatric- (n = 7) and elderly (n = 7)-care units, located in one specific area in a municipality in northern Sweden, participated in this questionnaire-based study. The participants (n = 40), on sick leave due to medically-assessed burnout (n = 20), and those with no indication of burnout (n = 20), respectively, completed Cattell's 16 Personality Factors Questionnaire between February and December 2004. Conventional statistical methods and partial least square regression were used to analyze data. The results showed that the burnout group had lower scores regarding emotional stability and higher scores regarding anxiety than the non-burnout group, but the results also showed a wide variation of personality traits within groups. The most important indicators for belonging to the burnout group were 'openness to changes' and 'anxiety', and for belonging to the non-burnout group, 'emotional stability', 'liveliness', 'privateness' (i.e. forthright or discreet), and 'tension'. The result indicates complex interactions between personality traits and the context in which the individual lives. It seems to be important to increase our awareness of when personality traits may constitute opportunities versus risks in dealing with one's existing circumstances.

Aspects of nursing with evidence-base when nursing frail older adults: a phenomenographic analysis of interviews with nurses in municipal care2014In: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences, ISSN 0283-9318, E-ISSN 1471-6712, Vol. 28, no 4, p. 793-801Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In earlier research as well as in political discussion and documents, the topic of evidence has been highlighted as one of the most important concerns in nursing care. This study focuses on understanding what lies behind nurses' ways of acting regarding evidence-based nursing through an illumination of the way they perceive the phenomena.

AIM: The aim was to identify and describe the different ways municipal care nurses perceive aspects of working with evidence when nursing frail older adults.

METHODS: An explorative design with a phenomenographic approach based on interviews with nurses working with home-based care within the municipality was used in order to gain understanding of nurse's perceptions of the phenomena.

RESULTS: Findings revealed that the nurses perceived a variety of aspects when working with evidence when nursing frail older people. Aspects with a spectra of different perceptions shown in the analysis were as follows: Evidence-based nursing as a desired intention/mission, lack of practical supporting structures to apply evidence, lack of confidence in own capacity to apply evidence and a belief that it will work anyway.

CONCLUSIONS: Findings reveal that it is a challenge to implement research both on an individual as well as on an organisational level. Understanding the contextual perceptions of evidence by nurses can cast light on the barriers as well as the prerequisites of working with evidence while caring for frail older adults in municipal care.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Since the beginning of the epidemic, more than 70 million people have been infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and the disease continues to be a public health issue all around the world. There are around 42.000 people in the Philippines living with HIV and therefor the nurses and other health care personal play a key part of the persons lives when undergoing treatments.

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe Philippine nurses’ experiences of caring for patients with HIV.

Method: A qualitative method was used and data was collected through semi structured interviews with five Philippine nurses at a hospital in Baguio. The interviews were analyzed with qualitative content analysis.

Results: The findings resulted in two main themes. The first theme, Nurse patient relationship, shows that a nurse patient relationship is important when caring for HIV patients, including getting to know the patient, the importance of trust and giving person centered care. Factors that may be obstacles in the process of building a relationship is also included in this theme. The second theme, Important aspects of caring, including factors such as having conversations, listening and supporting the patient.

Discussion: The main findings were discussed in relation to the literature and Travelbee’s human to human theory. The main focus in the discussion was the nurse and patient relationship and important aspects of caring for HIV patients.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Myocardial infarction is the most common cause of death in Sweden. Every year approximately 30 500 men and women suffer from the disease, of which 8 500 decease. A myocardial infarction occurs when the blood supply to the coronary arteries has been turned off for more than 20 minutes, which leads to an irreversible myocardial damage. Atherosclerosis, with several lifestyle-related risk factors, is the most common underlying cause for falling ill. The provided nursing care for these patients varies depending on where in the course of the disease they are. The aim of the care is to prevent risk factors, motivate to lifestyle changes and self-care, and to support these patients according to their own needs.

Aim: To describe patients’ experiences of life after myocardial infarction.

Methods: This literature review is based on ten scientific articles. The articles were initially analyzed to see if they met the criteria of quality. Similarities in the articles were then compiled into new emerging themes.

Results: The findings show in which way life changed after the myocardial infarction and in which way the social network and the health care service affected the patients’ recovery. These findings are presented in the following six themes with one subtheme: The disease’s impact on life with subcategory Increased body awareness and changed emotions, Reassessment of life, Trying to understand the cause of the disease, The social network’s impact on recovery, Experiences of support and information from the health care service and Experiences of making lifestyle changes.

Discussions: Based on Orem’s nursing theory, the findings will be discussed both from the patient’s and the nurse’s perspective. Patient-participation is promoted when the nurse and the patient together plans the nursing care, based on the patent’s perspective, knowledge and needs. The nurse holds through training specific knowledge in nursing care with the purpose to support the patient to an increased self-care-agency.

    Abstract [en]

his essay addresses the minister’s role within the Church of Sweden and their profession related to graduation ceremonies held in sacred rooms.Historically, this tradition can be traced back to the mid - 1800s. Although this has been an established tradition in Sweden, the development of the society has led to the role of religion becoming a controversial subject in modern society. Therefore, the tradition with end- of- school ceremonies has been questioned, not least within the mass media.

The purpose of this essay concerns the ministers’ experiences regarding the possibilities and challenges of spreading the Christian message in relation to the non-confessional school.

The ministers in my study represent parishes from both the countryside and from the city centre area. In the interviews, the ministers describe a development that has meant that they have had to step back in their profession, meaning that they do not share confessional elements at the ceremonies. Their role has instead evolved into a function of being a “host.” ”Hosting” in this context means that the ministers represent the sacred room during the graduation ceremony and communicate a subtle proclamation of the Christian message. The interviews show that the ministers, despite their toned-down profession and through the symbolism in the sacred room, offer opportunities for both religious and secular interpretations of the context.

    Abstract [en]

Working as a nurse means close contact with dying patients and mourning relatives. To care for severely ill and dying patients is part of the nursing profession and this places great expectations on the nurse to meet the needs of all individual patients and their relatives. Therefore, it is essential that the healthcare professionals have a deeper understanding of all the various needs a human being can have at the end of time.

Trygga hem, trygga barn: En kvalitativ studie om vägen in och ut ur kriminalitet ur tidigare kriminellas perspektiv2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Criminality is a major social problem. It is widely discussed that criminal punishments for crime should be raised, and that this and crime itself entails major social costs. Costs that may be invested in early-stage preventive work instead, to reduce it in the future. The purpose of our study is to investigate what previous offenders consider necessary to prevent a criminal behavior from developing or thriving. We have chosen to conduct five semistructured interviews with individuals who were previously convicted and who have not been criminally active for at least five years. We have then based on previous research as well as three theories, stamping theory, stigma and social ties to carry out an analysis of what emerged during the interviews.

In our results and analysis sections, we can see that school plays a major part in detecting some early-age behaviors, and how important it is that the children in school feel that they were included, heard and seen, and not stamped as "problem children". Furthermore, the interview response shows that prison missions have not had any deterrent effect on our respondents. During prison demonstrations, they have been able to meet more like-minded individuals and acquire a wider network of criminals. What has been helpful for those who have been in prison is that they have been helped in the form of treatment, such as the twelve-step program.     It is also found that attachement and positive male models have been missed by all respondents. Several respondents say that the reasons they changed their lives have been that they met someone who helped them out of their destructive behaviors.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Food and meals are something that all people have a relation to and reflect our social life. The nurse has the overall responsibility for nutrition care. Healthcare professionals today experience lack of knowledge in this complex area. Food is a part of the medical treatment in case of illness. It is important to maintain a stable and individualized nutritional intake to help improve health and prevent complications.

Aim: The aim of the study was to highlight patients’ experiences of food and meals.

Method: A literature review was made based on ten nursing studies with qualitative design. The articles were studied based on the aim of the study and complied by identifying main themes and substhemes.

Results: The literature review highlighted patient's experiences of food and meals. The result entailed five main themes and six subthemes. In these themes, the authors identified patient’s different experiences. In summary, patients experienced changes in taste and smell and also food choices and their health impact, the healthcare professionals’ lack of knowledge, and how organization affected patient’s meals and how patients experienced mental and social limits associated with food and meals.

Discussion: The result was discussed based on Katie Erikssons’ caritative theory of the suffering human, anchored in the background and other scientific studies. Patients who have problems with food and meals experience suffering in different dimensions. The strengths and weaknesses of the method are discussed by the authors.

Äldre invandrare och det svenska språket: En studie om hur äldre invandrare i Sverige upplever sin språkliga förmåga efter pensioneringen2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Adaptation to a changed body: Experiences of living with long-term pelvic girdle pain after childbirth2018In: Disability and Rehabilitation, ISSN 0963-8288, E-ISSN 1464-5165, Vol. 40, no 25, p. 3054-3060Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: To explore how women experience living with long-term pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain.

Materials and methods: Nine women with persistent pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain of 2–13 years were recruited by means of purposive sampling from long-term follow-up studies. The women were 28–42 years of age and had given birth to 2–3 children. Audio-taped in-depth interview with open-ended questions were used with the guiding question 'How do you experience living with pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain?'. The Empirical Phenomenological Psychological method was chosen for analysis.

Results: The pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain syndrome has a profound impact on everyday life for many years after pregnancy. Three constituents were identified as central to the experience of living with pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain: (1) the importance of the body for identity, (2) the understanding of pain, and (3) stages of change. The manner in which the women experienced their pain was interpreted in terms of two typologies: the ongoing struggle against the pain, and adaptation and acceptance.

Conclusion: The participants’ narratives highlighted that the pain led to severe functional limitations that threatened their capability to perform meaningful daily activities, and interfered with their sense of identity. It appears essential to meet with each patient individually and to manage long-term pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain as a pain syndrome.

    IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION

    Chronic pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain

    • Pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain impairs women’s capacity to perform meaningful activities of daily life for many years after pregnancy.
    • The participants’ narratives highlighted that the pain interfered with their sense of identity.
    • It appears essential to meet with each patient individually and to manage long-term pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain as a pain syndrome.

Concepts on Zakat, Caritas, and Diaconia in the changing social welfare landscape of Europe2017In: Journal of Religion & Spirituality in Social Work: Social Thought, ISSN 1542-6432, Vol. 36, no 1-2, p. 164-198Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article will enhance the understanding of Zakat’s contribution to social welfare provision in the changing social welfare landscape of Europe. It will contribute to the understanding of emerging Zakat within the framework of the welfare regimes in Europe in relation to the more established forms of Caritas and Diaconia. Data was gathered from the Welfare and Value (WaVe) research program in 13 cities and 12 countries 2005–2009. The research was conducted through observation and in-depth research with a descriptive approach to the complexity of majority–minority relations in each town, followed by an analytical phase which addressed various factors in relation to social cohesion, values, minorities, and gender. In this article, the data from the WaVe study was coded and analyzed, mainly to explore the way Zakat is implemented in the European context and within the framework of different contextual welfare regimes using Esping-Andersen typology and Van der Ven institutional model on religious & social identity. The results confirm the dominant role of Caritas and Diaconia but with emerging & innovative Zakat in some countries and a marginal role in mainly Eastern Europe. Zakat is also becoming and alternative & complimentary welfare provision model in Germany, France, and Croatia.

Faith Based Organizations and Secular Organizations as Social Provisions Providers in a Developing Context: The Case of Lebanon2008Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

It has been argued that community institutions, cultural norms, social capital and the local context aresome of the main determinants of supply and demand of social service provision and health andeducation related outcomes (Filmer 2003). The purpose of this research project is to examine CivilSociety Organisations in general and in particular Faith Based Organizations when it comes to socialservice provision in a development context (Sida 2004a) and more precisely, their configurations, options, expectations, limitations and eventually growing roles. The main question is: In what way doesthe provision of social services by Faith Based and Secular Organizations affect the outcome of such services in the contextof development? The focus is on basic social service provisions that are directly related to humandevelopment and poverty (cf. Prop 2002/03:122, World Bank 2004, Sida 2004b). As an empirical casestudy, Lebanon, amid its complex configurations of different confessional Faith Based Organizationsand secular social service providers, will be the focal point for this research. The regulating, financingand providing of social services in the MENA-region are mainly a traditional public responsibility. However, Faith Based Organizations as well as secular social organizations play a major role in theinteraction between clients, providers and policymakers (World Development Report 2004).In order to examine the possible correlation between social service provision and its outcomes, weneed to develop and understand the local context and the main determinants in Lebanon, based intheory and capable of being validated by empirical data. For this purpose, we will use three models: Thefirst one is Filmer’s model of social service provision and the determinants of health and educationoutcomes. The outcomes can be described in terms of level of child mortality, child nutrition, schoolcompletion, learning and/or achievements (Filmer 2003, Arab Human Development Reports 2002,2003, 2004, 2005). The second model is taken from Mansuri & Rao and their framework oncommunity-based and community-driven development. They argue that governments, the public, private sectors as well as citizens, through civil society, use a variety of community based-methodswhich are the essential ingredients of human development, such as education, health, water, sanitation, and electricity. (Mansuri & Rao 2003). The third model is “the Associationist Model” which develops aframework for the funding, regulation and implementing of social services from different socialproviders (Hogget & Thompson 1998.We believe that one important factor which could influence the decision whether a citizen would selectone form of social provision before another is the general or particularized trust expressed towards theproducer of these services. (Rothstein 2002, Uslaner 2000, Cross 2005. From Svedberg & Trägårdh2007). That is also the case in Lebanon where, for instance, NGOs and the private sector isdominating the health and education sectors as alternatives to an absent and what many consider acorrupt public sector (Lebanese Centre for Policy Studies 1999). Civil Society is replacing the state inthese sectors at the same time as the political role of religion is on the rise in Lebanon. Data will bepresented from the last World Values Survey, conducted in Lebanon during 2008.

    Abstract [en]

This dissertation is focusing upon the Catholic Church of Sweden and her transformation from a marginal minority church of immigrants to a multicultural congregation, which has become the second in size after the Lutheran State Church. The process of change is studied in relation to the Swedish Immigration's Policy and the different existing cultural paradigms that have existed since the Second World War. The principal part of this study is to increase the sociological knowledge about the Catholic Church of Sweden and analyse the future crossroads the Church will be facing in the future and how the social-pastoral work is being effected by external and internal factors. The dissertation has been focussed on four levels: Society, Church, Group/community, and Individual. The Swedish authorities have not so far seen religion and the churches as main social actors. The Swedish model tends to give the State monopoly in the production, regulation and financing of welfare services. Through the debate about Civil Society, other social actors such as the Non Governmental Organisations, the private sector and family/informal social networks are slowly transforming the Swedish welfare state. The Catholic Church in Sweden would need entrepreneurs if her social role should be increased. The actual leadership of the Catholic Church of Sweden has not changed substantially from the 1970's to the 1990's. On a central level, the church has had an Anglo-Saxon/German leadership, which was moderate/conservative in vision and modern in mission. On the parish level, the Slavic influence has increased with a more explicit conservative and traditional view on faith. National parishes are not allowed in the Catholic Church in Sweden, as the bishops believe that could lead to disunion, ethnic and cultural challenges. Thus, national groups have been created which comprise approximately half of the registered Catholics in Sweden. The dissertation concludes that the Catholic Church in Sweden has a multicultural composition of her members, her leadership is multicultural but without a manifested multicultural vision.

Shrinking Religious Communities and Thriving Interreligious Social Work in Postsecular Sweden2015In: Journal of Religion & Spirituality in Social Work: Social Thought, ISSN 1542-6432 (Print), 1542-6440 (Online), Vol. 34, no 1, p. 1-23Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Sweden is considered to be one of the most secular countries when measuring items such as church service attendance, expressed beliefs in God, and agreement with statements such as “religion is an important part of life,” compared to other countries in Europe and elsewhere. Official church attendance in major church congregations, such as the Church of Sweden and most other Protestant Free Churches, has shown a pattern of decrease in membership in modern times, with some congregations risking to disappear as a result. New configurations of social work practice are challenging current congregations with crossover-interfaith schemes, shared buildings, and community-oriented services with a field presence in marginalized urban areas, replacing homogeneous and diaconal or charitable work. Three cases of interreligious social work are analyzed, and in particular the social and religious leadership skills required for collaboration between the religious communities as well as the surrounding society. The interreligious social work practice is also an important factor of social service provision in the concerned local communities and has strengthened the role of religion in the social sphere in what can be expressed as a postsecular Sweden.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze social work managers’ and employees’ views of the organizational prerequisites to establish evidence-based practice (EBP) in the social services. The thesis has a particular focus on the organizational preconditions of strategic leadership and its importance in an EBP context. The research questions reflect whether the strategy for development is clear, if conditions are established for implementation, if continuous evaluation is used and feedback given, and whether there is perseverance regarding the developmental work in the organization. Differences in the opinions between managers and employees are examined. The study has a mixed-methods approach. Empirical data were derived from two children and youth units in Stockholm city in the form of a survey and four focus groups. The material was analyzed based on previous research on leadership related to implementation of EBP and Schein's framework of organizational culture and leadership. The results from the survey show statistically significant differences in the opinions between managers and employees: managers consistently respond in a more positive direction compared to the employees. The results from the focus groups show opportunities to provide clear direction, several similarities in opinion about how to create concrete conditions for implementation, as well as possibilities to develop work on evaluation and feedback. These results further highlight factors related to sustainability for strategic leadership. To conclude, the investigations of present study find that the strategic leadership does not yet characterize these organizations, but important steps have been taken in developing this organizational condition. Moreover, the results indicate that future work would benefit from systematically involve employees in the developing efforts to establish an evidence-based practice.

Hästterapi för barn med autismspektrumtillstånd: Terapeuters syn på metodik2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this qualitative study is to examine the experience of participation among first line managers within community home care. The study is based on eight interviews with first line managers operating in a metropolitan area in Sweden. A majority of the interviewees worked in private companies.

We have used two theories to interpret our empiri: Lean Production and Human Resource Management. The analysis resulted in seven themes: economy, leadership, participation, view on the organization, first line manager, private or municipally operated organization and expectations on the manager. Our results showed that all the interviewees experienced that they were participant in the organization. The participation however differed from interviewee to interviewee. The staff affected how the first line manager experienced participation. All interviewees believed that accessibility and presence were important factors for participation.

Härskarteknik och ledarskap inom ett stift i Svenska kyrkan: Påverkan på anställda och det diakonala arbetet2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background: Two main types that characterize inflammatory bowel disease are Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Inflammatory bowel disease affecting the digestive tract, and has an unpredictable disease course. Inflammatory bowel disease onset is usually between the ages of 15-30. It can cause adverse effects in a person’s daily activities because he or she is busy studying, building a career, raising a family and so on. Diseases have several common features. They occur in so-called relapses with periods of worsening when the gut lining becomes inflamed and ulcerated. It leads to symptoms such as bloody or slimy diarrhea, weight loss, abdominal pain and fatigue.

Aim: The purpose of this paper is to describe the impact of living with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis in adults.

Methods: A literature review. A literature search was performed which resulted in six peer-reviewed articles. Results Articles were then analyzed based on the selected object.

Results: The analysis of the articles revealed five recurring themes. These themes are physical aspects of the disease, mental aspects of the disease, social aspects, and loss of control as well as being a parent whom are living with inflammatory bowel disease. Several themes also hold underlying themes.

Discussions: Different aspects of the patients’ life were clarified in the results. It allowed the nurse to be prepared and provide god support and care when meeting with the patient.  The result highlights the problems that the patient has been in meetings with nursing staff. The attention on the problems in the patients’ treatment must be enlightened. By teaching patients to manage their condition and get treatment at the first sign of relapse, his or her suffering will decline.

Case Study of Persons with Cancer Participating ina Community-Based Exercise Program: An Exploration of Meaning and Change2016In: The Qualitative Report, ISSN 1052-0147, Vol. 21, no 8, p. 1409-1424Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

quantitative studies have substantiated the significant effects of exercise on physical functioning, theindividual’s perspective of participating in an exercise program has rarely been considered. The purpose of thisstudy was to explain the impact of a community based exercise program on the lives of persons with cancerand their caregivers. Based on Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory, a single explanatory case study withmultiple embedded units of analyses was conducted. Interviews were conducted with 10 individualsrepresenting participants with cancer, their caregivers, and health care providers. Data were analyzed usingYin’s case study method. Four themes emerged (Sense of Community, Building Relationships, Bridging theGap, and Living Life Abundantly), which identified the unique characteristics of this community basedexercise program. Incorporation of these characteristics into program planning may benefit othercommunities that aspire to offer a similar program to improve patient outcomes and enhance quality of life.

More appreciation of life or regretting the test? Experiences of living as a mutation carrier of Huntington's disease2011In: Journal of Genetic Counseling, ISSN 1059-7700, E-ISSN 1573-3599, Vol. 20, no 1, p. 70-79Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Little is known about how the knowledge of being a mutation carrier for Huntington's disease (HD) influences lives, emotionally and socially. In this qualitative study 10 interviews were conducted to explore the long term (>5 years) experiences of being a mutation carrier. The results showed a broad variety of both positive and negative impact on the carriers' lives. The most prominent positive changes reported were a greater appreciation of life and a tendency to bring the family closer together. On the other hand, some participants expressed decisional regrets and discussed the negative impact this knowledge had on their psychological well-being. The knowledge variously served as either a motivator or an obstacle in pursuing further education, career or investment in personal health. Deeper understanding of people's reactions to the certainty of knowing they will become affected with HD is essential for the genetic counseling team in order to provide appropriate support.

När diagnosen är bröstcancer: En litteraturöversikt om kvinnors hantering av beskedet2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women. Receiving news regarding a life-threatening disease can cause strong emotions. How women handle such news is due to defense mechanisms and conscious coping strategies that can all be multifaceted. The nurse has an important role to support these coping strategies and to promote good caregiving.

Aim: The purpose was to highlight women’s feelings and coping strategies after breast cancer diagnosis.

MethodTwelve scientific articles were analyzed in the present literature review according to the method recommended by Friberg. The articles were written between year 2010 and 2018, which were of qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods. Based on the results of the articles, similarities and differences were identified which became two head categories and eight sub-categories.

ResultsThe result showed that common kinds of feelings and coping strategies when receiving the news of breast cancer were feelings such as shockfear and anxiety and worries. It also showed coping strategies such as denialchange of focuspositive attitudesocial support and faith.

Discussion: The discussion concerns that anxiety can occur before, during and after a breast cancer message. Anxiety is therefore existential and can affect quality of life for longer time than at the time of diagnosis. The change of focus and prioritizing matters that were significant were discussed to give a sense of control. Social support was a coping strategy that was discussed to have a positive and negative effect for the women.
