Conference Note Benchmark 3.5, 2011, San Diego, CA - The Role of National Contexts: Nonprofit Management Education in Sweden2012In: Journal of Nonprofit Education and Leadership, ISSN 2157-0604, Vol. 2, no 2Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The fact that most research on nonprofit management education programs focuses on credit-based programs (Lee, 2002), coupled with the finding that international comparisons reveal national differences (Mirabella, Gemelli, Malcolm, & Berger, 2007), calls for more case-study and comparative research (Dolch, Ernst, McClusky, Mirabella, & Sadow, 2007; Donnelly-Cox & McGee, 2007; Mirabella, 2007; Wilson & Larson, 2002). Based on a panel presentation (Hvenmark & Segnestam Larsson, 2011), this article provides a brief presentation of the situation in Sweden with respect to nonprofit management education programs. It also offers an interpretation as to why the case of Sweden deviates from other countries, particularly regarding non-credit-based education programs. We then argue that these results enhance the knowledge and importance of national contexts and how they affect the development of nonprofit management education programs.

Litteraturstudie om faktorer som påverkar familjehemsplacerade barns psykiska mående2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Placed children have a higher risk of mental illness and negative development but it does not mean one can predict that it will go in a certain way for a certain child. Children belonging to a risk group can do well and vice versa, but it is the community and family care to balance the risk of a negative development

Purpose: In this paper, the authors want to draw attention to the problems of children placed children's mental-being. The focus is on three different factors to get a broader picture of what may affect the mental health of foster children.

Method: Descriptive literature review of scientific articles and literature.

Results: The factors that form the basis of our study is continuous / discontinuous contact with the biological parents, interrupted foster placement and school outcomes for foster children. Theories selected to connect the various factors related theory and risk and protective factors.

The results that have emerged show that foster children and young people feel worse than other children and young people who have not been children placed. School results are adversely affected by foster placement which has emerged in our study, and it is of great importance to the social, school, and family home cooperating to act against this.

Conclusion: Reports and literature has been quite agree that foster children feel worse than other children in the community. The various factors that the study has highlighted, there was very little empirical data to collect, why did the authors broaden and think internationally.

It would be desirable if it could be researched further in this area of research the more there are, the more knowledge is given to social workers who work with disadvantaged children in their everyday lives.

"To help others": An explorative case study about how help is described and defined by volunteer tourists working with children and teenagers in Brazil.2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Volunteer tourism is a popular way for young Westerners to discover the world and at the same take on the role as an international aid worker. For a short time they get an opportunity to improve the life conditions of people in development countries and get to know a new culture. The discourse of “making a difference” is dominating the marketing and promotion of the volunteer trips, yet little research is to be found about what the volunteers contribute with and what “help”, provided by them consist of. The main purpose of this study was to explore eventual post-colonial legacies or structures in the practice of volunteer tourism by exploring how help, in the actual context is described and defined by the volunteer tourists themselves. The thesis is based on a field study, conducted during two months in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Data was collected through 14 semi-structured interviews with volunteer tourists and observations at the volunteer sites. The data was further analysed by using terms and perspectives from post-colonial theory. The analysis show that the help from the volunteer tourists principally were supposed to compensate for deficiencies in the host community and that it was directed towards individual advancement for the kids that the volunteers encountered in the projects. Tendencies that the help-actions sometimes were based on assumptions, rather than facts about the conditions in the host community were also identified. Furthermore that the actions taken on by the volunteers sometimes implied simplified notions on ways to achieve development.

Forms of Resistance: A study of understandings regarding intimate partner violence among women in Ethiopia2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Of all the countries studied in the large-scale WHO Multi-country Study on Women´s Health and Domestic Violence against Women (2005), Ethiopian women had the highest numbers of acceptance of intimate partner violence. And according to previous research on the subject, Ethiopian women have a high tolerance for and acceptance of the violence they endure. Yet when I interviewed women in Ethiopia (all of whom had been victims of violence) I discovered multiple forms of resistance to - rather than acceptance of - violence. Rather than confirming how women come to accept violence, my study uncovers many ways in which women resist violence, even in contexts where the available means of resistance are extremely limited. The aim of my inductive study is to begin to do justice to these forms of resistance, which are easily overlooked. First, as I argue in the analyses of my interviews with the women, our ability to discern forms of resistance in situations of intimate partner violence requires a more capacious notion of resistance than the one usually employed. Second, as I argue through my engagement with the previous research and the analyses of my interviews with women’s organizations in Ethiopia, the inability to discern multiple and varied forms of resistance leads one to underestimate the degree of non-acceptance and active resistance in situations of intimate partner violence. Thus, while my limited study does not permit general conclusions about violence against women in Ethiopia, I conclude by suggesting that my findings have two important implications for social work, one theoretical and one practical.

"Väcker jag hopp om nåt som inte finns?": En studie om diakoners arbete med papperslösa2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to examine young adults, who have come to Sweden as unaccompanied children, experiences of opportunities and barriers in the Swedish labor market and their vision of community support. Another aim is to examine the young adults' general perception of life in the new country. The study is based on four qualitative interviews. The result shows that all the respondents have started their establishment on the labor market, in various degrees, and generally describes a positive picture of life in Sweden. This is grounded by that they now speak Swedish, completed studies and have a larger social network and more knowledge about Swedish society. The result indicates that the hindering factors for the establishment of the labor market are mainly limitations of already mentioned factors, as well as relevant experience and perceptions of discrimination. Overall, the perception and experience is that contacts are one of the most effective ways to work. They are optimistic about the future as they believe their already positive development in the labor market continues. The result shows that the respondents have a strong will and ambition to achieve their goals. It reveals the desire and need for more support from society specified the target group with a focus on early learning of Swedish, internship opportunities, summer jobs, support at the employment service and good academic guidance. Positive criticism is also indicated that having a contact person is a good step towards establishment on the labor market.

Narrativ terapi för äldre med depression: En litteraturstudie2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Education- the rainbow at the end of the tunnel: A study of a Supported Education Program in a consumer-operated organization, with a focus on experiences of stigma2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Experiences of stigma, isolation and discrimination are major barriers to accomplish higher education for people with mental illness. It has been argued that students are not receiving sufficient support to overcome these barriers. This qualitative study explores perceptions and experiences of barriers to education with focus on stigma amongst participants in a Supported Education program. The Supported Education (SEd) program in this study is located in a consumer-operated organization, Genesis Club in Worcester, Massachusetts. The empirical material was collected through a two weeks participant observation in Genesis Club’s Career Development Unit and through six interviews with members of the Clubhouse. The results show that the informants’ experiences of stigmatization have acted as a barrier to education. The SEd program at Genesis Club assists the participants in overcoming barriers. Peer support, role models, empowerment, not using labels, focusing on what you can contribute are all examples of factors that are present in the informants’ narratives about the SEd program at Genesis Club. Earlier research has shown that these all are factors that can counteract self- stigmatization. To problematize the results, the study has been inspired by theories on labeling and stigma.

Beskrivningar av flickor som misstänks för misshandel: En studie av socialtjänstens yttranden2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Links between informal caregiving and volunteering in Sweden: a 17-year perspective2013In: European Journal of Social Work, ISSN 1369-1457, E-ISSN 1468-2664, Vol. 16, no 2, p. 205-219Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article analyses informal caregiving and volunteering in organizations over 17 years in Sweden, with a focus on links between these two forms of unpaid activities. The discussion is based on results from a national survey that was repeated four times in the period 1992–2009. Links were found between the different types of activities. In all four studies a substantial group of the population was involved both in informal caregiving and volunteering. This group of ‘active citizens’ are commonly also engaged in informal social networks. This ‘double active’ group had increased over time and they provide a substantial amount of hours of involvement. Patterns outlined in this article demonstrate that unpaid activities represent a multifaceted phenomenon, and that the boundaries between informal caregiving and volunteering as forms of engagement may be more fluid than has previously been acknowledged. The results challenge the literature in which informal caregiving is viewed as a major obstacle to volunteering. At the same time, however, informal caregiving in general was found to be increasing. There might be reasons to be cautious about the possible risk that too much pressure on citizens for informal caregiving might jeopardize the type of double involvement that is outlined in this article.

Divergent Logics of Spiritual Care: End of Life and the Role of the Church of Sweden2009In: Journal of Religion, Spirituality & Aging, ISSN 1552-8030, Vol. 21, no 4, p. 344-360Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article addresses the role of the Church of Sweden in spiritual care for parishioners in their end-of-life phase. The frame of reference is a new geography of dying that implies that a majority of Swedes today, particularly older people, die in their local neighborhood of belonging, in fact in their parishes. Findings from a study of all parishes in two Swedish communities are presented that indicate support for dying parishioners is surprisingly uncommon, although most parishes offer support for the bereaved. A possible interpretation of these contrasting patterns is discussed. The findings indicate that divergent forms of care logic motivated the different types of support offered by the Church. Long-standing relationships with aging parishioners seemed to be at the heart of the matter.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to examine the perspective of the Swedish social services with regard to how parents change their roles in order to best take parental responsibility following separation. We particularly examine the perspective of the social services with regard to cases in which a parent has shortcomings in his or her care of the child and how the social services view their own role in this process. We conducted three focus group interviews: one involving a child protection investigation group and two involving family law groups. All of the units visited were in Stockholm, Sweden. The respondents in the focus groups were asked to reflect and discuss their views on the themes of parental responsibility, concern about the other parent’s capacity, roles in and involving the family, and the role of the social services. Our results were analysed using role theory and the concept of mentalisation. The results showed that in changing parental roles following separation, cooperation and minimising conflict between parents is fundamental. In cases in which the social services have contact with the parents, they too have a role in parental responsibility since they endeavour to guide the parents towards taking an adequate level of responsibility and ensure that the parents maintain a children’s perspective in which the needs of the child are in focus. If a parent has the ability to mentalise another person’s situation and see his or her needs, the changing of the parental role following separation is facilitated. Likewise, it also is beneficial if parents are able to communicate with each other. The role that is most complex, in our view, is that of a concerned parent with regard to the child staying with the other parent. Regardless of the nature of their relationship, it is the responsibility of both parents to always ensure that the child receives adequate care and does not come to harm.

    Abstract [en]

The study is based on qualitative semi-structured interviews with seven young people aged 15-18 who live with at least one sibling with some kind of disability. The siblings’ problems are neuropsychiatric, physical, and in one case, acquired disabilities. Based on development and identity theory we have analyzed the young people's experience of their everyday lives and descriptions of themselves. The purpose of the study is to examine how and in which way development and identity are influenced by growing up with a sibling that has a disability.

The results show that if parents have opportunities, support and tools to be able to find strategies for everyday life, and are able to allocate resources on the basis of all the siblings' individual needs, youth identity and development is not adversely affected. If there have not been resources for the youth to fend off the negative consequences the youth shows tendencies to develop negative and long-lasting consequences. If parents are unable to find strategies to be able to live their daily lives, it may be necessary for all family members to get help on how they can find these strategies and solve emerging problems.

Social Marketing: A way to reach and empower vulnerable people through prevention work against the spread of HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections in Ethiopia2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Millions of people in the world are infected by HIV/AIDS or/and other Sexually Transmitted Infections, STIs. Ethiopia is, with its population on almost 94 million people, one of the worst affected countries.

One of the methods that are used in the prevention work in order to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS and STIs in Ethiopia is Social Marketing, a concept that adopts traditional marketing techniques in order to obtain social change.

This inductive study explores how three various Ethiopian organizations are utilizing Social Marketing in their HIV/AIDS and STI prevention work throughout Ethiopia, how the concept can be used to achieve attitudinal- and behavioral change by people, as well as if the organization’s various Social Marketing projects strive to provide vulnerable groups of the Ethiopian society with empowerment, and if so, in what ways.

The empirical material was collected through six qualitative interviews and two focus group discussions during an eight-week long stay in Ethiopia during March-May, 2012.

The findings of this study have been analyzed through theories about human behavior with a focus on behavior change, as well as various definitions and concepts of empowerment.

The study’s result shows that Social Marketing can be utilized in several ways in the HIV/AIDS and STI prevention work in Ethiopia to obtain attitudinal- and behavior changes, for instance by using various commercial techniques, street campaigns, information/education/behavioral change materials, as well as trainings, outreach work and peer education, which aims to educate people about HIV/AIDS, STIs, condoms and condom use.

The organization’s joint Social Marketing project “Wise Up-program” includes Drop In Centers and Cooperative Activity for sex workers. The findings of this essay shows that these projects do strive to provide vulnerable groups of the Ethiopian society with empowerment, psychologically as well as economically.

"Det kallas misandri": En perspektivanalys på manligt motstånd mot feminism och kvinnliga feminister via ett mansrättsaktivistiskt internetforum2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Knowledge, Contribution and Social factors: A qualitative study about psychiatric social work in Goa, India2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Social work is one of the core mental health professions. With a dominance of a biological model in psychiatry, the scope of social factors has been relatively marginal. Social factors have been argued to be social work ́s area of expertise. Psychiatric social work is challenged to articulate its unique knowledge and valuable contribution to the field of mental health care since they are coexisting with other more well-established professions. This qualitative study explores how psychiatric social workers and psychiatrists in Goa, India, perceive social work's unique knowledge and its contribution to the field of mental health care. It further explores psychiatric social workers understanding of social factors in relation to mental illness. The empirical material was collected through twelve semi-structured interviews with ten psychiatric social workers and two psychiatrists working in different mental health care settings in Goa.

The results show that the main psychiatric social work contributions were described as raising awareness about mental illness and their functioning as a bridge between units. The result further shows a difficulty (among psychiatric social workers) to articulate psychiatric social work's unique knowledge, but during the interviews a specific in-depth knowledge emerged as well as a focus on psychiatric knowledge. Our findings showed that psychiatric social workers understood social factors in terms of social relations. The results are analyzed with Foucault's theory of discourse, Polanyi's theory of tacit knowledge and Ingleheart’s modernization theory.

Att fastna i socialrullen: En kvalitativ studie om långvarigt försörjningsstödsberoende2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

We have chosen to focus on the meaning of long-term income support dependency regarding health, goal setting and motivation for the recipient of economical aid. We have chosen to use semi structurized interviews to achieve our goal of reaching the clients experience of long-term income support dependency. The study consists of interviews of six clients whose answers have been analyzed through appliance of Kielhofner´s Model of human occupation, Scheff´s Shame in self and society.

Our results show regarding, 1) the factor health that long-term income support dependency may elevate the risk of illness and less experienced options of possibilities to act. 2) regarding the factor goal setting, that goals may be inefficiently used during social work with long-term income support dependent clients and may result in a disorganized relationship between client and social worker in the sense of making the parties pull in opposite direction. 3) regarding the factor motivation, that long-term income support dependency and the living with the emotion of shame elevates the risk of maintaining a negative image of oneself that limits the willpower to assimilate new knowledge and/or skills. This also effects the clients belief in their own capacity to change their current negative situation. Which may impact the rate of success in motivational social work and the individuals own possibilities to live an independent life, free of income support. Throughout the study we have encountered the traces of shame as a social emotion and emphasize on the environments pressure for change and socialization.

Kvinnor med HIV/AIDS i Kapstaden i Sydafrika  : En frivilligorganisations arbete med och syn på kvinnor med HIV/AIDS  2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Qualified or not?: A case study about integration of people with intellectual disabilities on the labor market in Recife, PE – Brazil, using the “Quota Law” as a starting point.2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

People with intellectual disability, as a category, are an especially disadvantage group, as they often are in need of interventions from the society throughout the whole life. In Brazil, work is considered a human right and important for the construction of the social and personal identity. There is a law, called the Quota Law, which demands all companies with 100 employees or more, to employ between 2 – 5 % people with disabilities. This law aims to ensure this social right for the target group. However, several studies are pointing at the timid result the law has provided concerning employment for people with intellectual disabilities. This study intends to detect barriers, important aspects and possible solutions in order to facilitate for people with intellectual disabilities to enter the labor market using the Quota Law as a starting point.

The study has an inductive and qualitative approach and the data is collected by semi-structured interviews. The respondents are all related to issues of people with intellectual disabilities and their integration on the labor market. Within the sample there are; persons with intellectual disabilities who have an employment on the labor market or have a desire to obtain a competitive employment; relatives to persons with intellectual disabilities; professionals working in two different non-government organizations (NGO´s) in Recife that provides vocational courses for the target group and finally; respondents working at public ministries who act in the area of integration of people with disabilities on the labor market.

The result shows that the main barriers for people with intellectual disabilities in order to reach the labor market were considered; prejudices and discrimination of persons with intellectual disability; the lack of qualification of people with intellectual disability in combination of high qualification requirements by the employers; the lack of support in order to compensate for intellectual disabilities; that the work environments are not customized for the target group and; fear of loosing the Benefit of Continuous Support of Social Assistance (BPC).

Theories of perspectives on intellectual disabilities are used to understand current interventions in order to integrate people with intellectual disabilities on the labor market. One conclusion is that there is a need for further efforts towards the target group in order to really obtain an effective integration for people with intellectual disability on the labor market.

    Abstract [en]

The aim was to find out the experiences of mentoring and its introduction in social services. The object was achieved by interviewing experienced social worker who had a few years of work experience in social services. Our study was an attempt to understand how mentoring can be seen during the induction period for newly qualified social workers in social services. To get an understanding of the interviewees' perceptions of mentoring, we tooke help of a Human Resources perspective. In the study, we used a qualitative research with data collection based on semi-structured interviews. The sample consisted of a convenience sample of five experienced social workers in department’s financial assistance and child and youth care. According to the study result it is important to have a mentoring and a comprehensive introduction, since it benefits the entire organization. All respondents in the study felt that a mentoring provides security and a check for recent graduates. Based on the results we have seen that even if an organization has an elaborate mentoring program/introduction program it’s not guaranteed to be completed.

Stadens fattiga: En rapport om Sveriges Stadsmissioner och fattigdom2015Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Non-profit organizations in mental health: their roles as seen in research2012In: VOLUNTAS - International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Organizations, ISSN 0957-8765, E-ISSN 1573-7888, Vol. 23, no 2, p. 287-301Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Non-profit organizations (NPO) for mental health are becoming significant actors. Here, their roles in welfare society as understood in research are identified and analyzed. Results from recent research publications on the mental health field are synthesized and categorized in order to find out their origin, theoretical orientation, and view on mental health NPO’s in relation to the public welfare systems. Relevant publications are primarily from the US, empirically oriented, and addressing surveys on both individual and organizational level. NPOs were most often seen as consensus-oriented service organizations, while very few (4%) were seen as conflict-oriented advocates (i.e., anti-professional). It is concluded that these NPOs are most often studied as complements or alternatives to existing public welfare services rather than on their own terms, and that research on the topic lacks more complex theoretical attempts.

Early Individual Prevention of Chronic Offenders: The Use of Criminological Theories in the Governance of Swedish Police and Social Services2015In: Youth Justice, ISSN 1473-2254, E-ISSN 1747-6283Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A national Swedish project was followed in 12 municipalities aimed at youth aged 15–20 years. Neither police nor social services systematically used the indicators based on criminological research and proposed by national authorities. The police and social services thought they had more contemporary and holistic intuitive knowledge than any systematic indicators could provide. Despite implementation difficulties, the project was described as a success at the political level and widely dispersed. The specific and systematic image of early indicators provided momentum at the policy level. The local authorities welcomed the opportunity to reach a group considered difficult to manage.

Gränsöverskridande samarbete: En studie om socionomers och lärares erfarenheter av ett samarbete över professionsgränserna2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Äldre finska krigsbarns behov av stöd i ålderdomen: En kvalitativ intervjustudie2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to increase understanding of how housing supporters describe their everyday work with the users' recovery at two sheltered housing, in Social Psychiatry perform purity of Skärholmens District Administration. We interviewed eight housing supporters. The selection of respondents was made based on a quota sample, four housing supporters from Frösätra and four from Solholmen. We did semi-structured interviews with all housing supporters and designed an interview guide. The interview guide affects phenomena such as how staff describes the concept of recovery and work on recovery. How the recovery is accessed and how staff describes their role. The results of this study demonstrated that recovery means that the individual has the ability to recover from the chaotic state, and that the individual will take charge of their lives. Recovery involves the development that the individual is autonomous although some symptoms are lasting. The work of recovery is about trusting the individual capacity and to not give up hope, to see the person behind the symptoms and the disease and highlight the healthy. Recovery achieved by the individual themselves take part in their own recovery, are active and want to make a change.

Utsatta kvinnors känsla av sammanhang på kvinnojourer2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

According to a National Board Report (Hermansson, Lindgren and Tengström 2011) women staying at shelters feel much worse than the general population. These women are also in need of great efforts and support from various social assistance instances. Many women who have previously stayed at the shelters get an opportunity for a fresh start. The women who choose to remain in the process usually goes through a turbulent time during the first period, often with a lot of differnet emotions involved. It is not unusual that a lot of decisions have to be made in order to cut the ties with their old life (aa). This study investigates women’s experience from women's shelters and how that experiencee has contributed to their change of life. Semistructured interviews have been completed with eight different women, all of them with experience from women's shelters. This has been done in order to investigate the questions of the study which is to try to understand and interpret the women's experiences from the time at the women's shelters and how that has helped them to manage their situation. The theoretical point of departure is Aaron Antonovsky´s theory "Sense of Coherence" (SOC). The result from the study has been categorised in three different subjects: Women's background and experiences of women's shelters, the structure of women's shelters and women's expectations and desires from women's shelters.
