    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

This study is about the work of the social services and the assessment of the risk of continued gender-based violence. The purpose of the study is to investigate what is needed to carry out a risk assessment with high validation of continued gender-based violence within the Social Services. Based on the purpose of the study, four issues have been raised regarding what is needed to carry out a risk assessment with high validation, the use of method / tools, the underlying knowledge (education) and work experience and the professional's own confidence in his risk assessment.

The method used in this study is quantitative in the form of a survey study. In order to get answers to these questions, a survey study was conducted and sent out to professional socialworkers. The study has chosen to target practitioners who work with gender-based violence and who investigate the risk of continued violence. The questionnaire was sent to all 26 municipalities in Stockholm County and was also left open for the opportunity for other municipalities outside Stockholm County to respond. The survey's answers were then summarized using the SurveyMonkey program for best results.

The results of the survey have been analyzed based on the theory of street-level bureaucracy and ecological systems theory. The survey showed that the majority of administrators worked between 6-15 years in social work and 0-5 years in social services. 99% of the respondents completed the NCK web course on violence in close relation, which is considered relevant to their current target group. The majority of respondents use the standardized assessment method called FREDA. Knowingly, the minority of respondents had undergone some form of college education in violence in close relation. All respondents replied that they use some kind of tool to make a good assessment of the risk of violence in close relation and the majority believe that what is needed to carry out a good risk assessment is work experience, special knowledge in violence in close relation and an assessment instruments, in this case FREDA.

What the study discusses based on its conclusions are the most important results that are considered to answer the essay's questions. The study discusses the limitations, shortcomings and difficulties of the survey. The study was concluded with questions for further research.

Tenant by the sea: Tenants´ associations in the industrialized port city of Gothenburg 1900-19502018In: URBAN RENEWAL AND RESILIENCE: CITIES IN COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE, Rom: EAUH , 2018, Vol. 14Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The port city of Gothenburg, Sweden, experienced massive social changes during the 19th century. Gothenburg became an important industrial center and the population multiplied tenfold. The urbanization process led to friction as the amount of factory workers rapidly increased. Together with other groups, such as clerks and small shop-owners, the workers formed a distinct popular class culture with organizational expressions and collective mobilization that changed the social and political order of the city forever. One of these expressions was the tenants´ associations, local organizations that were formed to further the tenants claims against their landlords and to advocate political reforms benefitting for the benefit of the tenants. These organizations, seen as a sort of trade unions for the rented home, rapidly grew in the mid-war period. Tenants´ associations advocated protective legislature for tenants and confronted landlords, both with legal mains and with militant methods such as rent strikes and blockades. The associations were also important in the social life of the working-class communities, organizing studies, social events and summer activities for children. This paper examines the role of the tenants´ association in the everyday life of the Gothenburg neighborhoods and especially the role of the associations in bringing different groups of workers, such as port and factory workers, together. By looking at the tenant movement of Gothenburg and comparing it to similar movements in other cities, such as Glasgow, I hope to show how the geographical and social context in the rapidly changing city of Gothenburg produced organizations that both showed remarkable similarities and notable differences to collective action organizations elsewhere.

Chronic pain and sex-differences; women accept and move, while men feel blue.2017In: PLoS ONE, ISSN 1932-6203, E-ISSN 1932-6203, Vol. 12, no 4, article id e0175737Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to explore differences between male and female patients entering a rehabilitation program at a pain clinic in order to gain a greater understanding of different approaches to be used in rehabilitation.

METHOD: 1371 patients referred to a specialty pain rehabilitation clinic, completed sociodemographic and pain related questionnaires. They rated their pain acceptance (CPAQ-8), their kinesiophobia (TSK), the impact of pain in their life (MPI), anxiety and depression levels (HAD) and quality of life scales: the SF-36, LiSat-11, and the EQ-5D. Because of the large sample size of the study, the significance level was set at the p ≤.01.

RESULTS: Analysis by t-test showed that when both sexes experience the same pain severity, women report significantly higher activity level, pain acceptance and social support while men report higher kinesiophobia, mood disturbances and lower activity level.

CONCLUSION: Pain acceptance (CPAQ-8) and kinesiophobia (TSK) showed the clearest differences between men and women. Pain acceptance and kinesiophobia are behaviorally defined and have the potential to be changed.

    Abstract [en]

My study investigated how young adult women give meaning to the concept of anxiety. In interviews, the respondents talked about their diverse experiences of the concept of anxiety, after which I made a narrative analysis of their stories. In the previous research chapter, i developed studies that examined the relationship between young women's identity and what was normal or deviating in relation to their experience of the concept of anxiety. I have looked at how the concept of anxiety was produced through modern history from a Swedish and international perspective. As theoretical explanatory models for my study, I have looked at theories of female identity creation based on mental ill-health and theories about the woman as a social construction. My data collection has been through semi-structured interviews about eight respondents. The collected empirical evidence showed that the concept of anxiety has a meaning that is not always clear to the world.

    Abstract [en]

Families lacking adequate housing are increasingly becoming a concern for social services throughout Sweden, challenging a key promise of the social democratic universalist welfare-state. This raises questions about experiences of parenthood under the threat of facing homelessness or while living in temporary and inadequate residence in the Swedish context. A qualitative, explorative interview study among parents without access to the housing market and housed by social services is proposed for this investigation. Interview-analysis using an inductive thematic framework-based model with content-analysis and interpretation suggests that the sample groups perceptions of reality revolves around four main interconnected themes or categories; housing history, mental processes, child-parent relationship, adaptation. These categories each accommodates subthemes such as process, exclusion, depression, repetitive thinking, closeness. Participants housing history is viewed as a process encompassing experiences of inadequacy and their mental processes seems to be dominated by different dimensions and levels of stress, depression and cognitive malfunctioning associated with future plans and living space. The study indicates that these experiences forge a strong and close parent-child relationship and seems to affect participants’ way of viewing their position in society. Observing the results through a theoretical lens concludes that concepts drawn from systems theory, social constructivist ideas such as social representation and positioning theory widens our understanding of how participants situation.

Results are also in line with previous qualitative as well as quantitative studies, and can be used to construct concepts and hypothesises regarding identity, class, exclusion and family relations that needs to be tested in further research. Finally, results suggest a careful approach within a social work context towards families living under studied living conditions. It seems pivotal to be aware of how unstable housing can affect mental processes, self-identity and family relationships but keeping in mind that these individual factors are linked to societal structures that lie at the core of homeless or at risk homeless parents’ situation.

Genusperspektiv i förvaltningsrättsliga domar enligt lagen om vård av unga2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Law (1990: 52) with special provisions for the care of young people (LVU) provides legal requirements that should be met when applying the law. The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyze LVU judges in two different counties based on section 3 in LVU. The investigation includs four judgments from Stockholm's Administrative Court and four judgments from Uppsala's Administrative Court. The judgement elected for this study were based on Section 3 of the LVU, primarily to be able to analyze the three requisits in the law: abuse, crime and other socially degrading behavior. The judgments were based on all the props contained in the LVU. The method used in the study was a content analysis, in the form of a text analysis. The result of the study shows that there are gender-specific differences in the judgments examined.

    Abstract [sv]

    Ideologi i rörelse2018Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Making volunteering economically valuable: the relationship between valuation devices and volunteering2017In: Voluntary Sector Review, ISSN 2040-8056, Vol. 8, no 3, p. 235-250Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article contributes to previous research on determining the economic value of volunteering by analysing the relationship between the valuation devices being proposed and volunteering and its properties. Is the relationship best characterised as direct, mediated or imposed? The empirical material for the article consists of volunteering economic valuation devices, as presented in previous research, which are analysed with a framework derived from the theoretical field of valuation. In addition to introducing the analytical framework and its application to the field of volunteering, the article discusses the absence of direct relationships while underscoring the dominance of the mediated relationship. It also argues that the imposed relationship highlights a hitherto less-discussed analytical dimension in the research debate on valuing volunteering. In conclusion, the relevance of the findings are discussed and ideas for a future research agenda presented.

”Det går verkligen ingen nöd på henne…”: En kvalitativ studie av hur sexköp legitimeras på Flashback2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The aim of this study is to describe and analyze the difference in perspectives between teachers and field workers, in terms of their own and each other’s roles in work respectively, but also in terms of cooperation concerning children in the common arena of schools. We have chosen to assume the following questions: (1) Which perceptions do the occupational groups have regarding work for socially disadvantaged children and what similarities and differences exist? And, (2) which perceptions do the occupational groups have regarding work that can be done in collaboration and what similarities and differences exist?

To clarify these issues a total of ten respondents were contacted, five from each professional group, and a total of 9 responses were recieved. The respondents were presented a vignette and asked to answer seven questions associated with it. The main questions of this study were addressed by coding and categorizing the answers gathered, which were later analyzed using the theory of social representations. These answers were put in context using background information we obtained from a number of sources to gain a better understanding of our research problem. Within this study, respondents have had the opportunity to give their views on their own and others' work with socially disadvantaged children, as well as their views on cooperation that takes place between the two occupational groups when it is required. This study concludes that, although respondents are positive regarding cooperation in general, there is no formal platform for cooperation between the two professions.

Teachers express that they are satisfied with the established system where they cooperate with the school health services and, in more severe cases, directly with social services. Field workers do not express a desired state of cooperation between themselves and teachers, but note that there is no organized collaboration between the two, and that their interaction with school health services is not extensive. Further conclusions that can be deduced are that there are opportunities for field workers to cooperate with teachers, however these opportunities are organizationally limited.

    Abstract [en]

The scientific problem that exists in this study is that the institutional care does not show the good results they intend to do. Instead young people learning about crime during the stay at the institution. The aim of this essay was to investigate the experiences of the institution staff working with young people to adapt them to a life without crime, in an environment where the youth could have a negative impact on each other. The questions focuses on respondents' work in order to give young people a chance to adapt to a life without crime and how they relate to the risk of young people's negative impact on each other. The questions have been studied through a qualitative approach and we have through semi-structured interviews collected our empirical material. We have interviewed eleven people working at SiS-institutions. Our results have been analyzed based on Goffman's theory of asylums. In addition to this theory, we also have previous research on negative impact in institutional environment, the staff’s work and institutional care. The result shows that the staff has the potential to adapt the youth to a life without crime. The result also shows that they have different methods of working with this and that it differs between the institutions and departments. The institution stay should be so long that the youth can handle a care in open forms. The results also show that the staff see a risk of placing young people with similar problems at the same place and that young people may have a negative impact on each other. Finally, the result shows that the youth’s time at the institution does not have a bearing on the negative impact, it is the staff's strategies and presence that are crucial.

Historical justice through redress schemes?: The practice of interpreting the law and physical child abuse in Sweden2018In: Scandinavian Journal of History, ISSN 0346-8755, E-ISSN 1502-7716Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Swedish redress scheme intended for victims of historical child abuse in out-of-home care compensated only 46% of claimants who sought economic compensation for past harms. This article explores the reasons behind this comparatively low validation rate by investigating a) how the eligibility criteria of the Redress Act were evaluated by the Redress Board; and b) the justifications and underlying values used when applications were rejected with reference to the fact that reported abuse was not deemed to be sufficiently severe according to past standards. Victim capital, which determines how vulnerable or credible a victim is perceived to be by others, as well as competence and narration, are essential aspects for this type of legal proceeding. The article demonstrates that the claimants had to traverse a complicated web of criteria to be awarded compensation. The outcomes for claimants were affected by how the past was conceptualized in this legal setting, what competences the victims themselves possessed, what competence and resources the administrative system offered, and the extent to which the decision-making process fragmented victims’ narratives.

Livsviktigt arbete: En enkätstudie om suicidprevention inom socialtjänsten2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to map out social workers’ preparedness and the occurrence of encounters with suicidal clients within the social services, through a survey. Nearly 1100 people in Sweden dies because of suicide every year and suicide is classified as a public health problem. According to research social workers often encounter suicidal clients, but how these encounters are handled have not been studied in any greater degree. The study’s selection was defined to Stockholm and three other counties. The units within the social services that were chosen for further examination were income support and adult/addiction. Research revolving suicide indicate that socioeconomic vulnerability, addiction and mental illness are risk factors connected to suicide, hence the choice of these units. The collected data material was processed by means of SPSS, through which univariate and bivariate analyses have been executed. The results were interpreted by means of earlier scientific findings, as well as theories concerning suicide prevention. One of the main findings that could be extracted from this study was that many social workers encounter suicidal clients. Most of the social workers have met one or several suicidal clients during the past year. The results also implies that the participants believe that they have preparedness to some extent in encounters with these clients. One fifth of the participants state that they have passed training in suicide prevention and the results show that training of such has a positive impact on their experience of preparedness.

    Abstract [en]

This qualitative study aims to, using critical discourse analysis, to analyze The National Board of Health and Welfares manual about work with unaccompanied asylum-seeking children and young people. The analysis aims to map how unaccompanied asylum-seeking children are presented and categorized in the discourse. The study also intends to investigate, within the framework of the discourse, whether there is structural anomaly between society and these children. In the study, I have used Fairclough's three-dimensional model of critical discourse analysis, both as theory and method and used theories of social constructivism, power, norms, identity and stigmatization. The result shows that the discourse creates identities and categorizes individuals into groups through the chosen language use. Furthermore, the discourse is sometimes perceived as unclear as the arguments are inconsistent and contradictory. Finally, the results show that there is an incongruity in the balance of power between the authorities and the children.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to explain how peer groups and social hierarchies are an essential part of, and generate bullying among school adolescents. This has been conducted through qualitative meta-analysis of research articles, which have been interpreted through sociological theories on stigmatization and power relationships between minor social groups. The results are presented through a grounded theory approach and analyzed by meta-analytic methods and discourse analytic ontology. The analysis indicates that peer groups and social hierarchies are stages of complex social processes, between the formations of school classes up until bullying breaks out. The essay concludes that further research of each causal relationship is needed in future research. The causalities also need to be considered when preventing social hierarchies and intervening in school bullying situations.

People with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), often associatedwith psychosocial problems and reduced quality of life, benefitfrom the guidance of trained medical social workers. Thisstudy explores the effectiveness of psychosocial treatmentin patients with RA using a structured interview to detectpsychosocial problems for 100 patients. These individualswere offered regular sessions with a medical social worker.Three types of mixed-problems were found: mixed problemsrelated to RA, mixed problems related to the life situation, andmixed problems related to a combination of RA and the lifesituation. The RA patients who reported mixed-problems attime of their diagnosis received psychosocial treatment froma medical social worker regardless of the mixed problems theyexperienced. In addition, we found that disease-related mixedproblems seemed more treatable than other problems. Socialwork in somatic healthcare seems most successful in patientswith sickness-related social and psychosocial problems.

    Abstract [en]

Around Sweden there are immigrant women who have organized themselves by joining networks to organize themselves in night walking in their neighbourhood. In society there exist stereotypies imaginations “the immigrant women” as low-educated housewives with many children.  At the same time they are viewed as socio-economically disadvantaged with a non-existent association life. At the same time Swedish media reports and expresses an increase in crime, death shooting and disturbance in Sweden's segregated / polarized suburbs. We have chosen to meet immigrant women who have organized themselves in networks for night walks in their suburb. The purpose is to increase knowledge about underlying causes behind their organization. To achieve this goal, we conducted two focus group interviews as well as two observations with night-walking women in Stockholm. To gain further perspectives, we complement the observations with two individual interviews with people (both Stockholm and Helsingborg), both of which have connections to and transparency in networks in the suburb. The material was analyzed using the concept of social capital. The results showed that there are women's groups that are homogeneous regarding age, ethnicity and mother tongue. But there also exist women's groups who organize across these boundaries. We found that the original community or affinity that women have within the homogeneous group is of great importance for them. This tends to make the group look inward, separated and isolated from "others". The result shows that organization creates an "A room of one's own" where the women can be themselves. Organizers in the night-walking networks strengthen women's social capital and promote well-being. The results of the study showed that women are a valuable resource within civil society, which, on their own initiative, drives non-profit social work. We see the importance of this being utilized, chosen by the social service, which by law should promote equality in living conditions, be active participation in social life and develop the resources of individuals and groups.

Promoting an image of independence: An institutional perspective on nonprofit organizational strategies2019In: Journal of ideology, Vol. 40, no 1Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article focuses on how the alleged value of independence in nonprofit organizations should be conceptualized, researched, and advanced. Through the conceptualization of independence as an institutional norm, the article makes several contributions to research on strategies for independence in nonprofit organizations. Rather than focusing on independence as a tangible organizational quality, the article studies and analyzes overarching strategies with which nonprofit organizations promote an image of independence. Recategorizations of results from previous research and illustrations from case studies of Swedish nonprofit ecolabeling serve as the main empirical material. By conceptualizing how nonprofit organizations employ multiple, and sometimes even contradictory, organizational strategies for being perceived as independent, the scope of research is broadened and the roles of institutional contexts and processes are highlighted.

Medmänniska, coach, farsa: En studie om rollen som kontaktperson inom socialtjänsten2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Assignment of a contact person is one of the most common social aids, based on the Swedish Social Service Act. It is granted by the municipal Social Services to youths and adults in need of a personal level of support for various social reasons. Persons who are recruited as contact persons are ordinary citizens, laymen. Eight contact persons were interviewed in this study to investigate their role as contact persons and how this role is created and defined. The interviewees consisted of both experienced and novel contact persons who had assignments in both small and large sized municipalities. In the interviews, they stated what initially motivated them to become a contact person and what motivates them today. They were interviewed on their own definition of the role of a contact person. The theoretical framework of the analysis consists of previous studies on volunteer engagement and theories describing how roles are created and developed. The interviewees defined their commitment mainly as voluntary since the economic compensation they receive is not their main motivation. They emphasized the long-term person-to-person level of the commitment. They were not introduced to the role of o contact person, and often had a limited contact with the Social services during the assignment. This is one reason why they had to create their own role as a contact person rather than adopting a predefined one. The role grew in interaction with the receiver of the support, and often developed towards a more personal rather than an official relationship over time. When analyzed according to the model of Wijkström and Lundström (2002), the role of the contact person attaches to several spheres in society. 1) In the state sphere, where society gives the laymen the official assignment as a contact person. 2) In the family sphere due to the personal level of commitment to the receiver of the support. 3) In the civil society sphere because of the contact persons’ own definition of their commitment mainly as being a volunteer. Hence, the conclusion of this study is that role of the contact person should be viewed as overlapping several spheres of society rather than being included in one of them.

The Issue of Gender in Relation to Mental Distress: Reflections on the Gendered Character of Disability and Resistance2018In: Scandinavian Journal of Disability Research, ISSN 1501-7419, E-ISSN 1745-3011, Vol. 20, no 1, p. 238-246Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Neither gender studies nor disability research/disability studies have explored gender to a great extent, especially in relation to disabled men or disabled women. In this article we reflect upon the issue of gender in relation to experiences of mental distress by drawing explicitly on some powerful narratives. Those narratives are argued to show the gendered character of disability and resistance; and display that the social forces and processes that construct and give shape to disability and gender are closely intermeshed. We argue that the gendered character of disablism and resistance should be further studies in the light of the new theoretical development that has been created, because gender matters.

Improved Intelligence, Literacy and Mathematic Skills Following School-Based Intervention for Children in Foster Care2020In: Frontiers in Psychology, ISSN 1664-1078, E-ISSN 1664-1078, Vol. 11, p. 1-11, article id 718Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Interventions aimed at improving school performance for children in foster care are few and are generally not implemented. By preventing failure in school, the prospect of reducing the risk for future poor health, substance abuse, unemployment, and other detrimental social conditions are met. This paper focuses on the change of preconditions for compulsory school performance in out-of-home care children, following an intervention called “Skolfam” that aims to improve school performance by individual assessments and school-based interventions. In this study, data were compiled from prospective repeated tests of 475 children in foster care in Sweden. Educational preconditions were analysed for compulsory school performance, such as intelligence (WISC-IV), psychosocial (SDQ) and adaptive behavior (ABAS-II), literacy (Reading Chains) and mathematical skills (Magne Mathematic Diagnoses) before and after the first 2 years of the “Skolfam” intervention. All tests were age-standardized and performed by experienced professionals. The results showed improved skills in complex aspects of literacy, mathematics, and cognitive performance, but no improvement in less complex literacy skills, adaptive behavior or mental health symptoms. In conclusion, higher-order cognitive functions can develop positively when appropriate school support is provided. Affective function, adaptive behavior, and psychosocial well-being present a more pervasive challenge for children in foster care. Implications for future research, practice in social services, and school is that further development of methods to aid future prospects for children in out-of-home care should aim to improve both cognitive higher-order executive-, and affective functions.

    Abstract [en]

The present study aims to investigate, through discourse analytical theory and methodology, how parenting role and parents who are positive for gender education at preschool are described and legitimized in forum discussions about children and family on the website Familjeliv.se. The study will look into the discussions if they give an impression of an alternative discourse in relation to the classic female and male norms. What concepts emerge from the discussions, how it is resonated around these concepts and how gender education and gender equality are described in the statements. The study looked at 43 threads with 1544 posts from the internet page Familjeliv.se where the results were analyzed using the Wreder’s three-step analysis model and the central concepts were identified by means of signs, nodal points and fluctuating significants. The previous research as well as the study's empirical evidence shows that, despite the fact that it is both in the Swedish schooling and curricula that pre-schools will promote gender equality and counteract traditional gender patterns and gender roles, this is not the case. Knowledge of what gender education means is weak in both parents, preschools and the public. Discourse positive for gender education at preschool highlight the importance of gender education for pre-school staff and that adults who socialize with children should be self-conscious about their own role in the cementation of traditional gender roles. Discourse also believes that gender education promotes children's development, interests, qualities, skills and give children more opportunities for self-realization.

    Abstract [en]

Education to achieve a sense of justice?

Unwanted actions in Swedish compulsory schools, such as violent and threatening behaviour, occur among children, and school-related reports to the police concerning children under the age of criminal responsibility have increased. There are no specific regulations stating that the police must be contacted when a child hits or threatens other children in school. However, school staff are obliged to report concerns about children’s well-being to social services. In Swedish compulsory schools, it is usually the school principal who decides whether an incident should be reported to the police. In this article seventeen interviews with principals about their attitudes to school-related reports to the police are analysed, focusing on children aged 7–14 who subject other children to violent and threatening acts in school. If children under the age of 15 are alleged to have committed crimes, they are diverted from the justice system to the welfare system, i.e. the social services. In most cases a report to the police of a child under 15 suspected of crime leads to a referral by the police to the social services with concern for a child at risk. Results demonstrate that principals differ considerably in assessing which acts are to be regarded as suspected crimes and at what minimum age a report should be made to the police. This suggests that the same unwanted action can be met with completely different reactions from the adult world in different schools. Some principals said that they report incidents among minors to highlight their concern about the welfare of the suspected child, having previously repeatedly expressed concerns to social services and sometimes to parents, without seeing any measures taken to prevent the child from continuing to commit unwanted actions in school.

Police-reported school violence among childrenbelow the age of criminal responsibility in Sweden – signs of increased sensitivity and segregation?2017In: Journal of Scandinavian Studies in Criminology and Crime Prevention, ISSN 1404-3858, E-ISSN 1651-2340Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Since the 1980s in Sweden, children’s violent actions in schools have been reported to the police as criminal offences more frequently than before. This increasing trend is analysed against the background of a general increased cultural sensitivity to violence and slowly developing social changes that affect the propensity to report every form of violent incident to the police. This project analyses 1,239 police reports of assault, unlawful threat, molestation and insulting behaviour committed in schools by 7- to 14-year olds in ten municipalities in the Stockholm area. The time period studied is from 2000 to 2010. Regression analysis shows systematic differences among schools in different areas and social contexts. Average merit ratings, which are a measure of the educational quality of schools, explain most of the variance and correlate negatively with reported incidents. There are also significant differences among municipalities and school forms in terms of police reports. So-called resource schools, which are designed to serve children with special needs, report extremely high numbers of incidents per child. Reporting seems to have been routinised in many schools, including resource schools. Our results can be interpreted as suggesting that increased cultural sensitivity generates a bias against children in less affluent contexts.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims at investigating parents' trust in the social services children and youth units. Children and youth units have the task of ensuring that children grow up under safe conditions. According to current research, it is important that people feel confident about the authorities they meet. According to Bo Rothstein's theories which are the ones we are focusing on; interpersonal trust is the foundation of a well-functioning society. Against this background, we are interested in examining parents' trust in social services.

The empirical material of the study has been obtained through a quantitative method in the form of a web-based survey. We received a total of 160 useful answers that were processed in the SPSS statistics program. The results have then been analyzed based on the research on trust that we have chosen for this study.

The result from this study shows that a majority of the respondents have low confidence in the social services children and youth units. People who are the most vulnerable in society, and who have low levels of interpersonal trust, have the lowest confidence in the social services children and youth units. The perceived quality of the social services work with children and young people was also investigated and showed that many of the parents experienced it as lacking. Based on the free text response, unexpected information also emerged as several parents expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of knowledge about neuropsychiatric disabilities which include ADHD, Asperger's syndrome and autism.
