    Abstract [en]

The present study aims to investigate, through discourse analytical theory and methodology, how parenting role and parents who are positive for gender education at preschool are described and legitimized in forum discussions about children and family on the website Familjeliv.se. The study will look into the discussions if they give an impression of an alternative discourse in relation to the classic female and male norms. What concepts emerge from the discussions, how it is resonated around these concepts and how gender education and gender equality are described in the statements. The study looked at 43 threads with 1544 posts from the internet page Familjeliv.se where the results were analyzed using the Wreder’s three-step analysis model and the central concepts were identified by means of signs, nodal points and fluctuating significants. The previous research as well as the study's empirical evidence shows that, despite the fact that it is both in the Swedish schooling and curricula that pre-schools will promote gender equality and counteract traditional gender patterns and gender roles, this is not the case. Knowledge of what gender education means is weak in both parents, preschools and the public. Discourse positive for gender education at preschool highlight the importance of gender education for pre-school staff and that adults who socialize with children should be self-conscious about their own role in the cementation of traditional gender roles. Discourse also believes that gender education promotes children's development, interests, qualities, skills and give children more opportunities for self-realization.

Education to achieve a sense of justice?

Unwanted actions in Swedish compulsory schools, such as violent and threatening behaviour, occur among children, and school-related reports to the police concerning children under the age of criminal responsibility have increased. There are no specific regulations stating that the police must be contacted when a child hits or threatens other children in school. However, school staff are obliged to report concerns about children’s well-being to social services. In Swedish compulsory schools, it is usually the school principal who decides whether an incident should be reported to the police. In this article seventeen interviews with principals about their attitudes to school-related reports to the police are analysed, focusing on children aged 7–14 who subject other children to violent and threatening acts in school. If children under the age of 15 are alleged to have committed crimes, they are diverted from the justice system to the welfare system, i.e. the social services. In most cases a report to the police of a child under 15 suspected of crime leads to a referral by the police to the social services with concern for a child at risk. Results demonstrate that principals differ considerably in assessing which acts are to be regarded as suspected crimes and at what minimum age a report should be made to the police. This suggests that the same unwanted action can be met with completely different reactions from the adult world in different schools. Some principals said that they report incidents among minors to highlight their concern about the welfare of the suspected child, having previously repeatedly expressed concerns to social services and sometimes to parents, without seeing any measures taken to prevent the child from continuing to commit unwanted actions in school.

Police-reported school violence among childrenbelow the age of criminal responsibility in Sweden – signs of increased sensitivity and segregation?2017In: Journal of Scandinavian Studies in Criminology and Crime Prevention, ISSN 1404-3858, E-ISSN 1651-2340Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Since the 1980s in Sweden, children’s violent actions in schools have been reported to the police as criminal offences more frequently than before. This increasing trend is analysed against the background of a general increased cultural sensitivity to violence and slowly developing social changes that affect the propensity to report every form of violent incident to the police. This project analyses 1,239 police reports of assault, unlawful threat, molestation and insulting behaviour committed in schools by 7- to 14-year olds in ten municipalities in the Stockholm area. The time period studied is from 2000 to 2010. Regression analysis shows systematic differences among schools in different areas and social contexts. Average merit ratings, which are a measure of the educational quality of schools, explain most of the variance and correlate negatively with reported incidents. There are also significant differences among municipalities and school forms in terms of police reports. So-called resource schools, which are designed to serve children with special needs, report extremely high numbers of incidents per child. Reporting seems to have been routinised in many schools, including resource schools. Our results can be interpreted as suggesting that increased cultural sensitivity generates a bias against children in less affluent contexts.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims at investigating parents' trust in the social services children and youth units. Children and youth units have the task of ensuring that children grow up under safe conditions. According to current research, it is important that people feel confident about the authorities they meet. According to Bo Rothstein's theories which are the ones we are focusing on; interpersonal trust is the foundation of a well-functioning society. Against this background, we are interested in examining parents' trust in social services.

The empirical material of the study has been obtained through a quantitative method in the form of a web-based survey. We received a total of 160 useful answers that were processed in the SPSS statistics program. The results have then been analyzed based on the research on trust that we have chosen for this study.

The result from this study shows that a majority of the respondents have low confidence in the social services children and youth units. People who are the most vulnerable in society, and who have low levels of interpersonal trust, have the lowest confidence in the social services children and youth units. The perceived quality of the social services work with children and young people was also investigated and showed that many of the parents experienced it as lacking. Based on the free text response, unexpected information also emerged as several parents expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of knowledge about neuropsychiatric disabilities which include ADHD, Asperger's syndrome and autism.

Hög standard: En studie av sjukhuskuratorers dokumentation2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Transpersoners upplevelse av bemötandet inom socialtjänsten2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to examine how transgender people experience the treatment from social services. Previous research shows that experiences of treatment of transgender people by social services are various. Transgender people have experienced lack of understanding and knowledge, misgendering and being called by the false name. Good treatment that transgender people experienced included respect for transgender people’s gender identity and the use of right pronoun.

This is a qualitative study based on semi- structured interviews and made through the phone with four persons. The study has been made with inductive method where an analytical framework with different theories and definitions was chosen taking into consideration the data. Treatment as definition was chosen to analyse the results of the study. I have even used the theory of social constructivism- Berger & Luckmann’s sociological theory as well as the definition heteronormativity and the theory on the heterosexual matrix. The theory on the heterosexual matrix is about expectations that everyone is heterosexual and belief that there are only two sexes that are opposites of each other.

The study has shown that transgender people’s experiences of treatment by social services are various. Transgender people have experienced lack of understanding. Furthermore, transgender people have experienced that they have not been taken seriously and have been discriminated. The majority of respondents has experienced that they do not fit the heteronorm. Transgender people have also experienced that sexual orientation and gender identity are seen by administrative officials as something social constructed, and therefore not innate, but chosen. The heteronorm and homosexuality have been lifted by transgender people as the reason why administrative officials did not want to help them. Good treatment transgender people have experienced was about equal treatment regardless of gender identity. Transgender people have experienced that administrative officials have shown that they respect and care about them as well as they have been offered help they needed. Conclusion of the study is that treatment experienced by transgender people depends on which attitude administrative officials have towards transgender people as well as on how transgender people define the concept treatment. Experiences of the treatment by social services can vary between different municipalities too.

Human rights activism in Mexico City – A case study on young people’s strategies for enacting citizenship2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of the strategies used by young people in Mexico City to exercise civic participation in the form of human rights activism. Mexican society is currently markedby an increased amount of human rights violations, together with high levels of corruption, violence and severe flaws within the democratic system. To claim and stand up for human rights in this context is not onlydifficult but also dangerous, which is a pattern that recurs in many context throughout the globe. The young activists who were interviewed share the experience of having attended the same human rights education, where human rights are taught through critical pedagogy. They manifest a perspective where human rights have to be enacted in all spheres of society, including interpersonal relationships. Human rights ideals also seem to represent something similar to an ideology that, when understood correctly, entails a transformative potential. The experience of undertaking human rights education formed new networks and bonds in civil society, as well as personal reflections on their own position in their surrounding. Although recognizing the importance of relating to the parliamentary structure and public institutions, the activists seem sceptical towards achieving human rights progress through that arena due to the large political and financial corruption. Instead, the result of this study highlights other strategies for exercising civic participation and defending human rights in Mexico, such as the creation and participation in autonomous, democratic structures within in the civil society and social movements, as well as actions executed within informal relationships and spheres.

    Abstract [en]

Identifying children as carers is a new way of understanding children's reality, and the knowledge and awareness of this group is still limited in Sweden and in other countries. This applies even more to young carers in immigrant families. There are currently few studies that highlight the situation of this group specifically. The purpose of the present study was to analyse research on young carers focusing on those with a foreign background. This was done through a literature review in which nine scientific articles on the situation of immigrant young carers were compiled and analysed. The result was then discussed from a sociological perspective on knowledge. The result shows that in the articles examined, there is a tendency to culturise young carers in immigrant families. The situation of immigrant young carers, irrespective of ethnicity, is described to be somewhat different from that of young carers from the majority community. Although factors such as socio-economic conditions are stated to play a role, it is culturally coloured beliefs that children are willing and able to give care to their family, and that it is primarily a task for girls, which is stated to play a crucial role for the caregiving of immigrant young carers. This approach also has implications for how the support for this group is proposed to be designed. Furthermore, the result shows that there is a tendency to focus on the risks that may exist with children’s caregiving, especially when children take over their parents' responsibilities and tasks. The reviewed material highlight the possible positive effects of immigrant children's caregiving, but the starting point is the potential problems that may arise with the adaptation of immigrant families to a new culture, which in turn may make young immigrants a risk group for a large amount of caregiving.

The Shifting Meanings of Popular Engagement in Swedish Society2019In: VOLUNTAS - International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Organizations, ISSN 0957-8765, E-ISSN 1573-7888Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to contribute to the Swedish debate on popular engagement by studying changes in popular engagement in Swedish society, and particularly look for processes of depoliticisation and politicisation since the beginning of the 1990s, by asking, has popular engagement been depoliticised since the beginning of the 1990s? Popular engagement has historically had different roles and fulfilled different functions; consequently, it is a societal phenomenon with several and competing significances due to varying dominant discourses framing the understanding of popular engagement and structuring the actions of engaged citizens. Obviously, the present composite of popular engagement in Swedish society reflects Swedish history and the various present forms of engagement can be conceived as historical layers. How popular engagement has been framed, valued and understood through history is an indication of what is supposed to be needed and feasible in a particular society at a certain time. This gives popular engagement symbolic meaning that renders it political significance and power that can be studied in cultural history. The article offers a brief historical review of the symbolic meanings of popular engagement in Swedish society from the breakthrough of modernity until the present times, and it demonstrates that it has not had a fixed significance over the years. Particular attention is given to an on-going subtle change of meaning of popular engagement occurring in contemporary Swedish society. This process implies a break with the popular mass movement tradition.

    Abstract [en]

This study is about the injured parties in district court rape verdicts and aims to analyze how the injured parties in the different verdicts appear in relation to the theory of The Ideal Victim from 1986. The empirics consists of 15 verdicts from two different district courts. We have used a thematic analysis to examine how circumstances of the injured parties can be interpreted based upon the criteria that composes the ideal victim. The result and analysis showed that the injured parties where there was a convicted verdict appeard to be more ideal in accordance with the theory than the injured parties where the offender was found not guilty. Despite the revises of the legislation that has been made with the aim to strenghten the right to sexual integrity, is our conclusion that the theory still seems to be valid. Therefore, we consider it important to continue to draw attention to the notions about people who have been raped.

    Abstract [en]

Since the middle of the 1800s, harmful effects that may occur when young people are treated for antisocial behavior at residential care institutions have been discussed and problematized. There is always a danger that the intervention used to treat young people worsens and/or creates new antisocial behaviors . This study has the ambition to highlight one of these harmful effects, the phenomenon of deviancy training. The concept of deviancy training means that individuals consciously and unconsciously reinforce antisocial behavior and also learn new antisocial behavior when they are partaking in treatment interventions and are grouped together at residential care institutions (Andershed, Andershed & Söderholm Carpelan, 2010). There is a lot of international research on deviancy training but surprisingly little Swedish research on the subject.

The aim of this study has been to investigate how the perspectives of treatment personnel and knowledge of deviancy training at residential care institutions can affect the treatment of young people with antisocial behavior. The three following questions were created to answer the intent of the essay; What experience and knowledge do treatment personnel have in the field of deviancy training among young people during treatment and sojourn at the residential care institution? How do treatment personnel handle the fact that young people affect each other negatively during their stay at the institution? What can treatment personnel's knowledge of deviancy training mean for developing strategies for managing that phenomenon at the institutions?

The essay has a qualitative design and included eight semistructured interviews with treatment personnel working at residential care institutions for treatment of adolescents with antisocial behavior.

The result of the essay has been presented based on three main topics; Impact describing the thought’s of treatment personnel on how young people influence each other, both positively and negatively, and how extencive deviancy training is at the institution. Experience describes treatment personnel’s experience of deviancy training, and Strategies for Management describes the strategies used by the treatment personnel to handle deviancy training The study is analysed with the help of researchers Michael Polanyi and Harry Collin's theories of tacit and explicit knowledge, as well as Chris Argyri's theories about the learning of individuals and institutions.

The outcome of this study shows that treatment personnel have experience and knowledge about deviancy training and that deviancy training does not occur to a greater extent than other positive, prosocial impacts between adolescents. The essay also illustrates trends that can demonstrate that institutional structure and treatment norm affects the possibilities of developing effective strategies to deal with deviancy training that does occur. In the final chapter of the essay, further discussion of the phenomenon of deviancy training is discussed as well as factors that can help solve the development of strategies for managing deviancy training at the institutions.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to deepen the understanding of which methods that can be used and developed for cooperation around issues of homelessness in the municipalities of Stockholm, and to identify any structural obstacles that negatively impacts individuals to improve their situations on the housing market. Project employees in the Housing coordination project in Skarpnäck district administration, employees in the municipality and individual clients were interviewed and the result from the interviews were analysed by theories of cooperation, Empowerment and mobilization of partiality. The result shows that there is both individual and structural factors that negatively impacts the housing situation in contemporary Sweden. The individual factors were shown to be lacking knowledge in the Swedish language, few private contacts and ignorance of the Swedish welfare system. The structural factors that was shown dealt about the lack of building new and affordable housing for those who are in an exposed position at the housing market and that the issue of homelessness does not have a priority location on the Swedish welfare agenda. More to that, the study showed that projects like the Housing coordination project is important for both the individual client, to professionals working with and cooperating with these issues in the municipalities and to illustrate and admit the lack of housing as a real problem in today’s welfare community.

    Abstract [en]

This interview based qualitative study aims to explore the professional knowledge that social workers experience that they have and use in their daily work in authority based child care in Sweden. The word “professional knowledge” is defined in the report as what “knowledge”, “experiences”, “instruments” and sense of “action space” the social workers include in the process of decision making regarding compulsory care. The empirical material was collected through eight semi-structured interviews with social workers with the purpose to gather their subjective views and opinions regarding their professional knowledge. Then, the empirical material was thematically categorized and analysed through Michael Lipsky's theory “Street-level bureaucracy” and narrative theory. The study finds that professional knowledge is a constant exchange of self-perceived experiences and that it is somewhat tied to the individual social work but also that there are some basic common observations to be made. One of the conclusions of the essay is that the professional knowledge that the social worker possesses is expressed through a development of experience which is tied to the challenging position the social workers have as street-level bureaucrats. Another finding is that in order to master this complicated position the social workers have to manage the emotions connected to their work through exchanging experience-based knowledge on a regular basis. In summary, the essay suggests that a constant exchange of experiences creates the ultimate basis for professional knowledge.

    Abstract [en]

When a child has been in foster care for three years, the Municipal Welfare Committee has to, according to Swedish legislation, evaluate whether or not to transfer the custody of the child to the foster family. Foster families are accepting children with severe physical and mental trauma into their homes, giving them everyday care, and raising and guiding them on their journey to adulthood. Still, the number of transferred custodies is small in comparison to the number of children in foster care. We are asking ourselves why this is the case. Unlike other studies on the subject, we have chosen to approach the matter from the perspective of case workers within the Social Services who, by law, are obligated to instigate the transfer of custody after three years. The aim of this thesis is to, through an Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) of a series of semi-structured deep interviews with social workers and their supervisors, investigate which organizational and emotional parameters in the responsible case worker’s everyday reality might be affecting the low number of instigated transfers of custody among children in Swedish foster care. The result shows five emerging themes among our respondents – Organization, Time, Responsibility, Information and Conflict. These five factors are impacting one other, but also the case worker. Discussed against a background of Organizational theory and the Front-line bureaucrat’s level of discretion, we aim to let the case workers’ relation to these five emerging themes put the matter of the low number of transferred custodies into a new light.

Hur påverkar deltagande i informellt lärande äldres självuppskattade välmående?

What should a Russian father be like?: Exploring fatherhood norms and identifying norm patterns among inhabitants of Saint Petersburg2018In: International Political Science Review, ISSN 0192-5121, E-ISSN 1460-373X, Vol. 39, no 4, p. 487-502Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Based on data from a survey conducted in Saint Petersburg in 2013, this article sheds new light on attitudes towards fatherhood in contemporary Russia. We explore what norms are held concerning fatherhood, how these attitudes are related to age, sex, education and income as well as to ideal–typical models established in previous research on fatherhood from Western Europe and the US. Thus, the article also discusses what explanatory value established theoretical models have for the Russian context. Norms of the role of the father in the family are related to general norms of masculinity and, hence, are an important part of the study of politics and the political climate in a society. The results show that there are several fatherhood ideals present in contemporary Northwestern Russia: a traditional breadwinner model, an active fatherhood model as well as what we refer to as a marginalized fatherhood model. The latter has not been substantially identified in previous research, and may tentatively be identified as a legacy of the Soviet era.

Ensamhetens identitet: En studie om identitetsskapande för personer som isolerat sig från omvärlden2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

-A study about identity formation for people who has isolated themselves from the surrounding world.

This is a study that focuses on identity formation for individuals who has isolated themselves from the outside world. My aim with the study is to contribute to the knowledge base about identity and identity formation for this specific group of people. The study is based around three main questions about what the individual choice looks like when it comes to isolation,  what the process of identity formation look like from pre to post isolation and finally how the respondents talk about stigmation as a result of the isolation itself and being called a Hemmasittare, witch is a term used by professionals to describe the people who has isolated themself.

Ensamhet bland äldre: en 10-årig jämförelse2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Objectives: Aging process may include both physical and mental challenges for the individual. Body and life go through changes and limit the opportunities to participate in social networks in same extent as before. Many elderly experience loneliness, which in previous studies has been shown to have consequences for well-being as for physical and mental health. The objective of this study was to examine some of the factors associated with living conditions in old age (+70); social activity, social support, economy as well as mobility problems and how these can be associated with experiences of loneliness among the elderly. Examined in present ten year comparison is: (a) how the extent of social activities, social support, economy and mobility change over time, (b) how the experience of loneliness in old age change over time and (c) how changes in social activity, social support, economy and mobility during this ten year period affects the experience of loneliness.

Material: Data from the 2004 and 2014 waves of the nationally representative Swedish Panel Study of Living Conditions of the Oldest Old (SWEOLD), a longitudinal study and database based on the sample of the Swedish level of living survey (LNU) was used (n = 466).

Methods: Correlation between 2004 and 2014 loneliness and social activity, social support, economy and mobility was investigated in bivariate analyses and logistic regressions. Relation between loneliness 2014 and changes during 2004-2014 in social activity, social support, economy and mobility were investigated in logistic regression.

Results: Social activity, social support and mobility problems were associated with feelings of loneliness in both 2004 and 2014. Social support and mobility were associated with loneliness 2004 but only social support remained significant associated with loneliness when adjusting for gender, age and living alone. Social activity, social support and mobility were significantly associated with loneliness 2014 even when adjusting for gender, age and living alone. Social activity and mobility decreased during the ten year period but only decrease in mobility was significantly associated with loneliness. The results were analyzed in the light of the capability theory.

Conclusions: Supportive relationships, participation in social activity and not be hampered by physical disabilities are important aspects to avoid loneliness. The study stresses the importance of the social work and society's responsibility to meet up with capabilities when the individual's own capabilities are declining to provide opportunities to live a dignified and valuable life.

Allt kan skakas om till något annat: En kvalitativ studie om personalomsättningen på socialtjänsten – ur ett brukarperspektiv2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
