    Abstract [en]

Background: Animals have been shown to have a positive effect on people. The nursing science approach says that a person can experience well-being despite illness. The positive attributes of animals can be used in health care to help ill people experience well-being. An animal-assisted intervention can be a form of activity or therapy involving pets (AAA / AAT) or horses (EAT).

Aim: The purpose of this study was to elucidate how animals in health care promote well-being for people with long-term illness.

Methods: Literature review based on fourteen original scientific articles, with both qualitative and quantitative approach.

Results: The compilation of the results led to four main categories with two subcategories respectively. These were: Physical aspects with subcategories Physical well-being and Bodily functions; Psychic aspects with subcategories Psychic well-being and Reduced psychiatric symptoms; Existential aspects with subcategories Quality of Life and Safety; Social Aspects with subcategories Social behavior and Relationships.

Discussions: Review and discussion of the selected method. Discussion of the results with the selected theoretical framework: Antonovsky's theory of Sense of Coherence (SOC) and the salutogenic approach. The results were discussed based on the concepts of comprehensibility, manageability and meaningfulness.

Healthcare Professionals' Perceptions of the Use of Pain Scales in Postoperative Pain Assessments2014In: Applied Nursing Research, ISSN 0897-1897, E-ISSN 1532-8201, Vol. 27, no 1, p. 53-58Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aim: To describe how healthcare professionals perceive the use of pain scales in postoperative care.

Background: Pain scales are important but not an obvious choice to use in postoperative care. No study has explored how healthcare professionals experience the use of pain scales. Methods: An explorative design with a phenomenographic approach was used. The sample consisted of 25 healthcare professionals. Semistructured interviews were performed.

Results: Four descriptive categories emerged - the use of pain scales facilitated the understanding of postoperative pain, facilitated treatment, demanded a multidimensional approach and was affected by work situations.

Conclusions: Healthcare professionals described that pain scales contribute to the understanding of patient's postoperative pain. It is important to ensure patient understanding and be aware about variations in pain ratings. Dialogue and observations are necessary to be certain what the ratings mean to the patient. The use of pain scales depends on patient's needs and organization. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Injury-related fear-avoidance and symptoms of posttraumatic stress in parents of children with burns2016In: Burns, ISSN 0305-4179, E-ISSN 1879-1409, Vol. 42, no 2, p. 414-420Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Parents of children with burns experience a range of psychological reactions and symptoms, and parents’ health is known to impact children's health. So far, there is little research into potential mechanisms that maintain parents’ symptoms. The aim was to investigate parental injury-related fear-avoidance, and its associations with injury severity and health measures. Parents (n = 107) of children aged 0.4–18 years that sustained burns 0.1–9.0 years previously completed questionnaires on fear-avoidance, posttraumatic stress, and health of the child. Analyses showed that the average level of fear-avoidance was low and positively associated with measures of injury severity and parents’ symptoms of posttraumatic stress, and negatively associated with parents’ ratings of their child's health. In two separate multiple regressions with parents’ symptoms of PTSD and the child's health as dependent variables, fear-avoidance made the largest contribution in both models while injury severity was non-significant. Results were not related to comorbid conditions of the child, scarring, or parent-related socio-demographic variables. In summary, injury-related fear-avoidance is more likely among parents whose children sustain more severe burns. In turn, fear-avoidance contributes significantly to parents’ symptoms of PTSD and to poorer health ratings regarding the child, irrespective of injury severity or child comorbidity.

Perceived support in parents of children with burns2016In: General Hospital Psychiatry, ISSN 0163-8343, E-ISSN 1873-7714, Vol. 38, no Jan-Feb, p. 105-108Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: Children sustaining burns that require treatment in a burn center have a need for multiprofessional aftercare services over a prolonged time. So far, there is little research into satisfaction with care and support after pediatric burns. The aim was to investigate parents’ perception of support after pediatric burn and associations with parent, child and injury characteristics.

Method: Parents (n= 101) of children aged 0.4–17.8 years completed questionnaires on support, parent’s psychological symptoms and health of the child. Time since injury was 0.1–9.0 years.

Results: Perceived lack of psychosocial, medical, societal or family support was reported by 21% of the parents. Lack of support was not associated with injury or sociodemographic characteristics, but it was significantly associated with parents’ symptoms of general anxiety, depression and injury-related fear avoidance, as well as parents’ ratings of their child’s general health and heat sensitivity.

Conclusion: Perceived support did not differ on account of burn severity or sociodemographic status. However, care providers should be more attentive to and supportive of parents signaling poorer general health in their child and cognitive beliefs that the child is at risk for harm when active and parents who themselves show signs of psychological symptoms.

Psychological problems in children with burns: parents' reports on the strengths and difficulties questionnaire2011In: Burns, ISSN 0305-4179, E-ISSN 1879-1409, Vol. 37, no 8, p. 1309-1316Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Burns may have a devastating effect on psychological health among children, although previous studies report difficulties as well as positive findings. The aims were to describe the rate of psychological problems in children with burns using a standardised instrument and to explore statistical predictors of these problems. Parents (n = 94) of children aged 3-18 years who sustained burns 0.3-9.0 years previously answered the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) covering Emotional symptoms, Conduct problems, Hyperactivity/Inattention, Peer relationship problems, Prosocial behaviour, and a Total difficulties score. Questions regarding parental psychological health and family situation were also included. The results for three of the SDQ subscales were close to the norm (10%) regarding the rate of cases where clinical problems were indicated, while the rate of cases indicated for Conduct, Peer problems and Total difficulties was 18-20%. Statistical predictors of the SDQ subscales were mainly parents' psychological symptoms, father's education, and changes in living arrangements. Visible scars were relevant for the Total difficulties score and Hyperactivity/Inattention. In summary, a slightly larger proportion of children with burns had psychological problems than is the case among children in general, and family variables exerted the most influence on parental reports of children's psychological problems.

    Abstract [en]

Introduction: What forces, apparent and hidden drive the future psychotherapist to take the first steps on the path to become a therapist and what forces drive hir to continue?. The aim of the study is to explore these impelling/motivating forces and the relevance of psychological process on that path.

Questions: How does the therapist describe these forces on hir way to become a therapist?Do they form a pattern to analyse? What is the relevance of a psychotherapeutic process on that path?

Method: The study is hermeneutic, phenomenological in a narrative perspective, based on semi structured interviews in depth with open questions. The resulting material was organized in themes.

Results: While working with the study an emerging pattern has become clearer: the impelling forces, interlaced with the existential struggle between ratio, rational reasoning and emotional truth can be interpreted as a psychotherapeutic process.

Discussion: The impelling forces in the study give together a picture of life’s fundamental struggle between ratio, intellectual reasoning and emotional truth. These forces also give the picture of the therapeutic process as a path and hub in the therapists training and life, an individual, personal labour of integrating theory, experience and method. The use of poetic citations, little arrows in the theoretical, logical texts in the study illustrate the emotional side of the human being interlaced with the logical and rational. This process is a task of mending, reconciliation and healing. It means selfexamination, a personal integration of theory, experience and personality leading to a sense of identity. The psychotherapeutic process with personal therapy and counselling leads on to a further search for the origins of the compelling forces, their foundations and roots. A path with a goal but no end.

Patients with dementia in group living: experiences 4 years after admission1995In: International psychogeriatrics, ISSN 1041-6102, E-ISSN 1741-203X, Vol. 7, no 1, p. 123-127Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Sixteen patients with dementia were studied 4 years after admission to group-living (GL) units, an intermediate level of dementia care. Of eight patients who were still alive, four lived in the GL units and four had been institutionalized. The eight patients who had died had spent 89% of their survival time in GL. Aggression was the most frequent cause of institutionalization.

    Abstract [en]

Forty-seven patients in psychogeriatric day centre were analysed regarding use of resources, costs and well-being. The level of well-being was based on interviews with staff and relatives and related to the economic outcome--a cost utility analysis. A 6 month period prior to day care was compared with the first 6 months in such care. The use of resources at home increased by 20% while the use of institutional care was reduced by 22%. Fifty-three percent of the patients improved in their well-being after participation in day care. When the cost of utility analysis was applied, the cost for a well-year was 4293 pounds.

Group living, an alternative for dementia patients: A cost analysis1991In: International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, ISSN 0885-6230, E-ISSN 1099-1166, Vol. 6, no 1, p. 21-29Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The increasing number of patients with dementia requires new forms of care management. Group living (GL) is an alternative, and two units were established in Sundsvall, Sweden, in 1984. The patients in GL used institutional care to a significantly lower extent (nursing homes, emergency hospital care, psychiatric care) after admission to GL (p < 0.001). The costs for the Municipality and the County Council changed from £49 to £42/day (p=0.21) and patient during the first six-month period in GL compared to the six-month period prior to GL. If the costs for GL are compared to the costs for nursing home care (£68/day), GL is significantly cheaper (p < 0.05).

Integrating yoga as a method in clinical social work dealing with addiction: Bridging Eastern and Western perspective. Annika Wincent2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis it will be discussed whether the body-mind-spirit aspect is a missing component in Western methods in clinical social work and if yoga could contribute to a more holistic multi model in this area. Yoga includes physical postures, controlled breathing exercises, meditation and attitudes in life of no harming of oneself or any living being. Yoga invites the practitioner to enhance the selfdiscipline and control over and regulation of impulses, thoughts and feelings. In the result it will be presented in what way this Eastern discipline have influenced the participants recovery. It will be discussed weather yoga is a tool to get in contact with the body, breath and mind and if the enhanced awareness helps to control anger, stress, anxiety and craving - overwhelming feelings that can be triggers for a substance abuse. The thesis is a qualitative study with the aim of exploring the experience of yoga as a complimentary method in addiction recovery. The interviews were conducted in three different rehab centres of Kripa Foundation in India in form of focus groups and individual interviews.

At risk for Huntington disease: The PHAROS (Prospective Huntington At Risk Observational Study) cohort enrolled.2006In: Archives of Neurology, ISSN 0003-9942, E-ISSN 1538-3687, Vol. 63, no 7, p. 991-6Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

OBJECTIVE: To identify the emerging clinical precursors that indicate the early onset of Huntington disease (HD) in a reliable and gene-specific manner. This information is critical for the development of therapeutic trials aimed at postponing clinical onset in HD gene carriers. METHODS: Between July 1999 and January 2004, 1001 adults at 50-50 risk for HD agreed to provide longitudinal clinical data and a blood DNA sample under consent provisions that require their individual clinical and genetic information to never be revealed. RESULTS: The Prospective Huntington At Risk Observational Study (PHAROS) cohort is characterized by a 2:1 predominance of women to men, high educational attainment, and gainful employment. Despite the gender disparity, the demographic, hereditary, and clinical characteristics of the female and male participants were similar. Investigators, who are unaware of individual gene status, characterized the baseline cohort to be highly functional with minimal motor or cognitive impairment; 92.3% of participants were judged to have no or nonspecific motor abnormalities; 6.7%, to have possible or probable motor signs; and only 1.0%, to have unequivocal HD. CONCLUSION: The baseline characteristics of the PHAROS cohort make it well suited to generate objective and prospective data about gene-specific clinical precursors that can be used as outcomes in controlled trials aimed at postponing the onset of HD.

What to Do with a Second Chance in Life? Long-Term Experiences of Non-carriers of Huntington's Disease.2018In: Journal of Genetic Counseling, ISSN 1059-7700, E-ISSN 1573-3599, Vol. 27, no 6, p. 1438-1446Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Little is known about how people's lives are influenced when going from a 50% risk status of Huntington's disease (HD) to no risk after performing predictive testing. In this study, 20 interviews were conducted to explore the long-term (> 5 years) experiences after receiving predictive test results as a non-carrier of HD. The results showed a broad variety of both positive and negative reactions. The most prominent positive reaction reported was feelings of relief and gratitude, of not carrying the HD mutation for themselves and for their children. Also, the non-carrier status promoted in some individuals' significant life changes such as a wishing to have (more) children, pursuing a career or breaking up from an unhappy relationship. However, negative reactions on their psychological well-being were also described. Some had experienced psychological pressure of needing to do something extraordinary in their lives; others expressed feelings of guilt towards affected or untested siblings, resulting in sadness or clinical depression. The new genetic risk status could generate a need of re-orientation, a process that for some persons took several years to accomplish. The results of the present study show the importance of offering long-term post-result counselling for non-carriers in order to deal with the psychological consequences that may follow predictive testing.

    Abstract [en]

This interview based qualitative study aims to explore the professional knowledge that social workers experience that they have and use in their daily work in authority based child care in Sweden. The word “professional knowledge” is defined in the report as what “knowledge”, “experiences”, “instruments” and sense of “action space” the social workers include in the process of decision making regarding compulsory care. The empirical material was collected through eight semi-structured interviews with social workers with the purpose to gather their subjective views and opinions regarding their professional knowledge. Then, the empirical material was thematically categorized and analysed through Michael Lipsky's theory “Street-level bureaucracy” and narrative theory. The study finds that professional knowledge is a constant exchange of self-perceived experiences and that it is somewhat tied to the individual social work but also that there are some basic common observations to be made. One of the conclusions of the essay is that the professional knowledge that the social worker possesses is expressed through a development of experience which is tied to the challenging position the social workers have as street-level bureaucrats. Another finding is that in order to master this complicated position the social workers have to manage the emotions connected to their work through exchanging experience-based knowledge on a regular basis. In summary, the essay suggests that a constant exchange of experiences creates the ultimate basis for professional knowledge.

    Abstract [en]

This textbook is the first to focus on comprehensive interdisciplinary care approaches aimed at enhancing the wellbeing of children with cancer and their families throughout the illness experience. Among the topics addressed are the epidemiology of pediatric cancer distress, including physical, emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions; the role of the interdisciplinary team; communication and advance care planning; symptom prevention and management; care at the end of life; family bereavement care; and approaches to ease clinician distress.  The contributing authors are true experts and provide guidance based on the highest available level of evidence in the field. The book has not only an interdisciplinary but also an international perspective; it will appeal globally to all clinicians caring for children with cancer, including physicians, nurses, psychosocial clinicians, and chaplains, among others.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines the causes behind the linguistic changes in the field of social vulnerability that in a Western European context has occurred the past three decades. The background of the study is the development where concepts as poverty, marginalization and underclass has declined in use while politicians and scientists today rather speaks in terms of social exclusion, advanced marginality and the Swedish term “utanförskap”. The research aim is justified by the fact that these concepts are used in social policy and thus has direct consequences for those described. The study resulted in three explanatory models on why the language around social vulnerability has changed; (1) Structural changes in society are creating new forms of social vulnerability, (2) New social theories and traditions of thought creates new perspectives on social vulnerability and (3) New concepts introduced by political intentions. Changes in material conditions and structures in combination with new social theories, in the transition between a modern and a postmodern perspective, created new concepts that came to be represented by politicians in Western Europe and North America. The meaning of the concepts has changed from describing people included in society, the majority of poor workers, to describing excluded minorities, excised from their civil rights. The linguistic changes has also meant a shift from one-dimensional to multidimensional terms, from a vertically illustrated the vulnerability to a horizontal one and to a greater focus on the process of vulnerability.

Sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av samtal med patienter i palliativ vård: En litteraturöversikt2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: In difficult situations where life comes to a head, it is common that difficult issues and feelings are raised. This also raises the demands on those who care for these patients and knowledge of communication in palliative care is required. Because of this, nurses take on a great responsibility, not only for the patients they care for, but also the entire context patient is in. Therefore, the communication between nurses and patients an important part of health care.

Aim: To highlight nurses’ experiences of conversations with patients in palliative care.

Method: A literature review has been constructed by eight scientific articles from CINAHL complete and PubMed. The keywords used are: hospice and palliative nursing, terminal care, conversations, nurse experience och communication.

Results: The results that emerged were divided and presented under different headings, these were: Nurses' experiences of calls in palliative care and factors that affect conversations in palliative care. Several subheadings were then created. It was revealed that many nurses experienced end-of-life conversations as difficult and it was something that required training and experience to handle in the best way.

Discussion: The discussion was divided results into two headings: the actual responsibility and the importance of communication. This was also discussed using further literature confirming the result.

    Abstract [en]

When a child has been in foster care for three years, the Municipal Welfare Committee has to, according to Swedish legislation, evaluate whether or not to transfer the custody of the child to the foster family. Foster families are accepting children with severe physical and mental trauma into their homes, giving them everyday care, and raising and guiding them on their journey to adulthood. Still, the number of transferred custodies is small in comparison to the number of children in foster care. We are asking ourselves why this is the case. Unlike other studies on the subject, we have chosen to approach the matter from the perspective of case workers within the Social Services who, by law, are obligated to instigate the transfer of custody after three years. The aim of this thesis is to, through an Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) of a series of semi-structured deep interviews with social workers and their supervisors, investigate which organizational and emotional parameters in the responsible case worker’s everyday reality might be affecting the low number of instigated transfers of custody among children in Swedish foster care. The result shows five emerging themes among our respondents – Organization, Time, Responsibility, Information and Conflict. These five factors are impacting one other, but also the case worker. Discussed against a background of Organizational theory and the Front-line bureaucrat’s level of discretion, we aim to let the case workers’ relation to these five emerging themes put the matter of the low number of transferred custodies into a new light.

Torka tårar utan handskar: En studie om kuratorers arbete med HIV- positiva personer2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims toincrease knowledge about counselors work with HIV-positiveindividuals, both while the news isbeing delivered and afterwards. Themedical research on HIV is constantly moving forward and in the current situation an HIV diagnosis is not adeath sentence like it wasbefore. The great challenge isnow for HIV-positiveindividuals to learn to live withtheir HIV andwhere there is great need of assistance. Unfortunately, the psychosocial research on HIV is not nearly as widespreadas the medical.

This study was carried out by sixqualitative interviews with counselorsat three different clinics for HIV -positive people. Twoadditional interviews with therapists havebeen implemented in an organization for HIV-positive people. Theresults of this study show that onlyone of six counselors usually is involved in the delivery of the news to HIV- positive persons. Contacttracing is thepreeminent duty, but psychosocial care is priority for all counselors. Counselorsperceive their work and importance asmajor, most important for thosepatients who do not have a social network or a close person to talk to. The study also shows that the counselors are experiencing the social consequences as more severe than the medicalconsequences that HIV causes.

The conclusionsof this study are that the counselors are working with contacttracing, motivational work and support. Counselors feel that they have time and opportunity to meet the needs of their patients. But it turns outto be some limitations for thecounselors working at hospitals. That involves limited hours, timeconsuming tasks thatrequired contacttracing. Counselors sometimes refer to other agencies suchas organizations if they believe thatthere are tasks they cannot offer. Furthermore, the study shows that HIV-positive people experience a variety of barriers in society and some of them are difficult for counselors to change becausethey require a change of attitude in society. Counselors workand importance isincredibly important, especially for those patients who isolate themselvesfrom the society. For those people, the counselor is the only person they might speak to.

A Huntington disease-like neurodegenerative disorder maps to chromosome 20p.1998In: American Journal of Human Genetics, ISSN 0002-9297, E-ISSN 1537-6605, Vol. 63, no 5, p. 1431-8Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Huntington disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor disturbance, cognitive loss, and psychiatric manifestations. The disease is associated with a CAG trinucleotide-repeat expansion in the Huntington gene (IT15) on chromosome 4p16.3. One family with a history of HD was referred to us initially for predictive testing using linkage analysis. However, the chromosome 4p region was completely excluded by polymorphic markers, and later no CAG-repeat expansion in the HD gene was detected. To map the disease trait segregating in this family, whole-genome screening with highly polymorphic dinucleotide-, trinucleotide-, and tetranucleotide-repeat DNA markers was performed. A positive LOD score of 3.01 was obtained for the marker D20S482 on chromosome 20p, by two-point LOD-score analysis with the MLINK program. Haplotype analysis indicated that the gene responsible for the disease is likely located in a 2.7-cM region between the markers D20S193 and D20S895. Candidate genes from the mapping region were screened for mutations.

Psalmsång med närhet: Psalmsångens funktion och kyrkomusikerns avsikt med psalmspelet i gudstjänsten2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Introduction: An overseas service in the defense forces is no single concern of the defense staff, but affects the entire family. Research shows that when parents leave the children for military service abroad, the child's mood and ability to cope with a period of separation greatly depending on how the child’s life is in general. Based on the understanding and interpretation of previous research, this study will see into how it’s manifested for these children to continue to live a life with their father after military foreign missions. Is it possible for the relationship to repair completely, re-attach and return to the roles that the family system once had, or is there more complications?

Question: How is life portrayed for young adults to live with their father after his military missions abroad?

Method used in this research for carrying out semi-structured interviews are qualitative approach, where six respondents, three men two women participated. The collected data were analyzed with thematic analysis with inductive approach. What is described is the phenomenon; respondents' thoughts, experiences and feelings about their own subjective experience and its meaning in their life.

The results are linked to the three main themes: separation from the parent, the impact of military missions abroad to the system and re-attachment with the father. There are also eight sub-themes that collectively describe the respondents' subjective experience. Respondents perceive a lack of openness in the dialogue and communication between their father and themselves regarding the subject of the father's international assignment as military. The separation has touched the respondents in varied way, but the general opinion is that respondents also believe that the father's decision to go on military assignments abroad affected the entire family system, not least, the role changes and frictions that arise as a consequence.

Discussion: The relational problems are consequences of previous attachment failures. Repairing the communication to their father enables re-attachment, which can improve the relational difficulties between the father and the young adult. When communication in adulthood increased the respondents had the opportunity to express the emotions associated with the separation that can act as a healing effect on the relationship and association with their father.

Stöd från vårdpersonal inom palliativ hemsjukvård - närståendes upplevelser: En litteraturöversikt2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Palliative care at home is also called palliative home care and means care performed at home. It aims to maintain quality of life for relatives and patients as well as to minimize suffering. Relatives are essential for achieving a good palliative care. They take on the responsibility for the care but it´s also given to them. The number of relatives who provides care is increasing in connection with that more patients wish to get palliative home care. Being a relative to patients in palliative home care can thereby have a negative impact on the relatives quality of life and thereof it´s important that nurses support relatives.

Aim: The aim was to highlight how relatives experience support of care staff in palliative home care.

Method: In the literature review the chosen databases were Cinahl Complete, PubMed and Medline.12 scientific articles of qualitative design was selected and then quality-reviewed and analyzed according to Friberg´s method.

Results: The result generated in five themes; Experience of the home healthcare team´s support, the meaning of relation, continuity and acknowledgement to experience support, the meaning of the information to experience support, the caring responsibility and the experience of support after the caring period.

Discussion: The result is discussed based on the background, the scientific concept of health, Meleis theory and other research. To achieve a healthy transition it´s required that relatives are offered support. The result showed that relatives experienced lack of emotional and informative support. Preparing relatives and offering support was discussed as a central task for nurses, there factors to inadequately support appeared to be lack of knowledge, time and identification of relatives in need of support.

Den enkla runda rörelsen: En studie i rörelsefilosofier vid pianospel2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This work analyses the movements involved in different piano techniques and is intended to improve, enhance and develop your own playing and that of your pupils. These movements can be more or less effective depending on the relationship of the interaction of the joints involved to the resulting sound. A technique that allows no freedom but is inhibited by the opposing tensions of different groups of muscles affects technical dexterity and tone. On the basis of the major reform of piano techniques at the end of the nineteenth century, I have studied three different movement philosophies, which I have labelled the straight school, the spiral school and the free movement school, using the manuals of three authors, Adolph Kullak, Elisabeth Caland and Rudolf Breithaupt, to represent them. The differences between them are illustrated through comparison of their recommendations for scales, chords, leaps and tremolo from the piano and the organ repertoire. The differences in the attitudes to the pianist’s movements and the instructions given can be viewed as three theories about motions: the principle of isolated muscular activity, the theory of coordination and coherence and the philosophy of relaxation and free fall. Study of the process from an anatomical perspective enables certain conclusions to be drawn about the effectiveness of a movement in solving the technical problem and the artistic task. I have found evidence that the most coordinated movements combine independent finger settings, the weight of the arm and rotary motion. It is, however, spiral motion that resolves the opposition between the straight keyboard and the rotary motion of the joints. The path through which energy is transferred from the body to the instrument is more aligned and becomes shorter as the joints approach a central point. This central point is the outcome of the opposing rotary motions of the joints involved. My conclusion is that spiral movements are, paradoxically, at the same time those that are most aligned and unrestricted. This simple circular motion makes the playing seem simple and the sound noticeably clear.

Sjukhuskuratorns profession och kurativt arbete inom geriatrisk vård2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background: The care environment within psychiatric inpatient care has been described to create different emotions and is characterized as a hard environment where patients sometimes are treated against their will and can be exposed to coercive measures and restrictions. Aggressiveness is common at these wards and is considered a problem. There is a knowledge gap when it comes to patients and situations that increase the risk for aggressiveness in the context of psychiatric inpatient care.

Aim: To identify characteristic features of aggressive patients and to identify aspects that effects situations where threats and violence has occurred in psychiatric inpatient care and to synthesise an explanatory model.

Method: An integrative literature overview containing both qualitative and quantitative articles. The data were analysed using Whittemore and Knafl’s (2005) working procedure.

Results: The result generated in three main themes and ten subthemes. Following three main themes were identified: the patient as a trigger, the care environment as a trigger and the staff as a trigger.

Discussion: The method is discussed in relation to these concepts: trustworthiness, dependability, confirmability and transferability. The results are discussed with support of previous research and in relation to Phil Barker's theory the Tidal model.

Körrekrytering i Svenska kyrkan: Vilka faktorer bör man fokusera på för att vara framgångsrik när man rekryterar körsångare till Svenska kyrkan?2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Thai nurses experiences of utilizing gerontological knowledge within general nursing care: A qualitative study2016In: Developing Educational Leadership in Gerontology Worldwide, 2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Around the globe the number of older adults is increasing as the life expectancy tends to be longer. Although many nursing programs provide education related to caring for older adults, the connection to and utilization of gerontological knowledge within nursing is vague and still not well understood. The Double Degree Bilingual Nursing Program (DDBNP) is a collaboration between two universities, one in Thailand and one in Sweden, where the nursing students from the Thai University, study their fourth and final year of the program at the university in Sweden. Some of these DDBNP students may become the future leaders of health care in Thailand. While in Sweden, the DDBNP students study a course in gerontology and the fundamentals of nursing care for older adults together with other international students. Within the gerontology course, lecturers/doctoral students in nursing from the Thai University were invited to participate as co-teachers in the course, thus the Eastern and Western cultural views on aging as well as on pedagogy were combined. The first batch of students attending DDBNP have graduated and have now been working as registered nurses (RNs) for more than a year. By interviewing these RNs from the DDBNP, we will be able to explore their utilization of the gerontological knowledge that they gained from the course, and see how they are applying this knowledge in their work as nurses. The study thus aims to explore the Double Degree nurses’ experiences with implementing gerontological knowledge within nursing care. Research designs: A narrative qualitative inquiry will be applied in this study. This inquiry is able to explore what the gerontology course have meant to the nursing students and how have they had use of the gerontological knowledge in their nursing careers. Data collection:In-depth interviews will be performed with 10 general nurses in Thailand. The participants graduated from the Double Degree Bilingual Nursing Program and had participated in a gerontology course at a Swedish university. Data analysis:Transcribed interviews will be analyzed using content analysis.

Objective 1: After attending this activity, participants will be able to discuss how gerontological knowledge is being utilized by the Double Degree Bilingual Nursing Program graduates within their work in general nursing environments.

Objective 2: The participants will also be able to discuss and share experiences about challenges and opportunities implementing gerontological knowledge within nursing care.

"Att lindra livet": Pensionerade socialarbetare blickar tillbaka på sitt yrkesliv2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
