    Abstract [en]

Background: The care relationship is described as the cornerstone of nursing processes. This relationship is mutual but the caregiver carries the responsibility and shares the patient's story in order to nurse together with rather than only nursing the patient. The dual mission, civil protection and nursing, complicates the relationship in forensic care. Nursing a patient who committed a crime is not as intuitive as relieving the suffering of an innocent patient. Important in forensic psychiatry is everyday socializing where the caregiver finds a balance between personal and private. Negative emotions such as fear can make carers narrow-minded and uncompromising while an unexpected action beyond the daily work routines can prove to be important for patient recovery. The forensic psychiatric patients express a desire for safe, caring relationships but can be met by an exercise of power, negligence, intimidation and violence that create a feeling of containment and non-care. Aim: To describe nurses' thoughts concerning their privacy and what to reveal about themselves to patients in forensic psychiatric care. Method: Qualitative design with focus group interviews for data collection. Two focus group interviews with caregivers in forensic psychiatry were conducted. The material was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: The results generated four main categories and ten subcategories. Influencing factors: the patient's needs and the nature of the crime, timing and information flow. Awareness of caring role: consider who hears and deals with the consequences, ability to set boundaries and communication. Key to relationship: giving in order to receive, honesty, human contact and trust. Indifference and suffering: lies and distance, negative consequences, neither need nor meaning. Discussions: The results are discussed within the theoretical framework of ‘The Symphony of Care’, which discusses the phenomenon of the care relationship. Many caregivers’ reflections that emerge in the results can be identified within this context.

Sjuksköterskors upplevelser av att vårda suicidnära individer: En litteraturstudie2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: About one million people lose their lives by suicide each year worldwide. There are psychosocial, clinical and biological factors in suicidal acts. Whether suicide developed illustrated in a suicidal process. Care after a failed suicide attempt is experienced mostly uncomfortable and emotional of suicide close to the individual. The goal of treatment is to promote patient safety. For individuals have to feel confidence in the care and caregiver should be a safe and trustful care relationship is created.

Aim: The aim was to describe nurses' experiences of caring for suicidal individuals.

Methods: The author has worked out a study of literature in accordance with Friberg (2006). The study is based on ten scientific articles from databases CINAHL with Full Text, MEDLINE with Full Text and PubMed. Specific inclusion- and exclusion criteria were followed. A content analysis and quality assessment was done on selected articles.

Results: The results of scientific articles compiled in the study of literature in five different categories. These categories are as follows: Feeling of responsibility, Feeling of occupied and lack of time, Feeling of lack of competence, Feeling of insecurity in communication with suicidal individuals and Approach to suicidal individuals.

Discussions: The author concludes that nurses feel that there are factors that prevent the possibility of good interaction between the suicide and suicidal individuals. These factors are divided summarized as deficient of resources and attainment including communication. It induces in turn feelings of frustration associated with not being able to be helpful enough for these individuals.

An isolated involvement in mental health care: Experiences of parents of young adults.2017In: Journal of Clinical Nursing, ISSN 0962-1067, E-ISSN 1365-2702, Vol. 26, no 7-8, p. 1053-1065Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

AIM: The aim of this study was to explore parents' involvement in the informal and professional care of their young adult child with mental illness. A further aim was to examine concepts in the caring theory of "Involvement in the light - involvement in the dark" in the context of mental health care.

BACKGROUND: Mental illness has increased among young people in high-income countries and suicide is now the leading cause of death for this group. Because of their disease, these young people may have difficulty in carrying out daily, taken-for-granted, tasks. Consequently, they often become dependent on their parents, and their parents shoulder a considerable responsibility.

DESIGN AND METHODS: A secondary descriptive design with a deductive content analysis was used. Ten parents who have a son or daughter with long-term mental illness (aged 18 - 25) were interviewed. The deductive analysis was based on the caring theory of "Involvement in the light - Involvement in the dark".

RESULTS: The results are described using the following concepts in the theory: "Knowing", "Doing", "Being" and "Attitude of the health professionals". The result are to a great extent consistent with the "Involvement in the dark" metaphor, which describes an isolated involvement in which the parents were not informed, seen or acknowledged by the health professionals. Continuous support by professionals with a positive attitude was described as being of decisive importance for meaningful involvement. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Kvinnors sexualitet efter hysterektomi: En litteraturöversikt2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Hysterectomy is one of the most common surgical procedures women undergo and it is common that the woman’s sexuality is affected. Sexuality is difficult to define and includes more than just the sexual act; it is a part of being human. How women express their sexuality depends on many different factors such as age, social and/or cultural aspects.

Our aim is to describe women’s sexuality after hysterectomy

A literature review based on 14 scientific articles whose results showing how a hysterectomy affects women's sexuality. The articles were published in different continents and all the women in the studies were adult women who had undergone hysterectomy due to benign causes. The theoretical framework used is Joyce Travelbee´s theory of interpersonal relations.

Psychosexual factors that were affected were for instance lubrication, orgasm, sexual desire and pain. How the procedure affected the women’s sexuality differed is individual and it is difficult to say which factor who is most affected by the procedure. Furthermore, social and psychological factors contribute to women's experience of her sexuality.

How hysterectomy affects women's sexuality is varying and individual. Women’s natural ageing which affects women’s sexuality is something that is not taken in consideration. Information and education which is included in the task of nursing is according to the women in the study important for them. In addition, women’s partners have an important role in supporting the woman but they are in need of information and knowledge. There are major shortcomings within nursing regarding sexuality and it is common that nurses blame lack of time as a factor why sexuality is not spoken about.

Drogberoende och smärta - patienters upplevelser av bemötandet i vården: En litteraturstudie2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Nurses in general find it difficult to provide patients with pain relief because pain is a subjective phenomenon. Nurses emphasize that there is a lack of knowledge and guidelines for the handling of pain. Nurses who encounter drug dependent patients in pain find it to be stressful and complicated. The reason for this is that the nurses felt that it was fraught with their own inner conflicts and moral dilemmas.

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe patient experiences of health care professionals treatment when the patient experiences pain and when they are at the same time addicted to drugs.

Method: A literature review based on ten scientific articles was made. The articles was analysed with Fribergs (2012) method where the authors searched for similarities and differences out of a phenomenon that created the results themes.

Results: The results of this litterature review are presented in two main themes. In the first main theme – Obstruct in the health care professionals treatment the authors could find five sub themes. These sub themes highlights how patients experience negative treatment from the health care professionals. In the second main theme: Preconditions in the treatment the authors could find one sub theme. This sub theme highlights how patients with drug addiction experience a caring relationship and how it can evolve.

Discussion: The authors have discussed the results main findings in relation to the literature review background, the authors aspects and with Katie Erikssons “caritative” theory used as a theoretical framework

Kvinnors upplevelser av att leva med fekal inkontinens: En litteraturstudie2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background: Children as visitors to the hospital was accepted in the 1980s, previously it was considered that the child could be exposed to psychological trauma. Nowadays we know that it is important to include the child in care. A parent’s illness affects the whole family and nurse´s today is therefore faced with the challenge of caring for the patient, while ensuring the child's needs. Nurse’s duty to respond to the needs of children as family is clear in the legislation.

Aim:To describe the child's needs and strategies the child uses to handle a situation when their parent has cancer.

Method: A literature study about children’s (6-12 years) needs and strategies to deal with the situation have been implemented. Ten scientific papers have been reviewed by Fribergs criteria for the analysis of scientific studies. The theoretical framework we used is Dahlberg and Segestens theory of health, welfare and security.

Results: Children have a great need to get information, knowledge, support, to be a child and that there is an open communication in this situation. The strategies that emerged to address the situation were to: Maintain a normal life, to take advantage of the valuable and positive, to keep informed, different types of distraction and a willingness to help parents with both practical and social support. Child's way of handling the situation when that parent has cancer can have long term negative effects later in life.

Discussion:The discussion formed four new themes: Lack of information and knowledge leads to insecurity, information creates a sense of ownership, need to be a family and long term consequences. A discussion took place related to the concepts of health, welfare and security. We have found that the nurse must take into account the interdependence that exists between child and parent to meet child's needs and promote a sense of security.

Sjuksköterskors upplevelser av sexuella trakasserier på arbetsplatsen: En litteraturöversikt2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Sexual harassment is defined as an act alluding to sex and that is unwelcome by the person towards whom the action is directed. It is an illegal action that risks violating and harming a person’s dignity. The problem can be found in the field of healthcare and amounts to precariousness in the work environment that affects the health of the nurse as well as the quality of the care.

Aim: The aim was to describe nurses’ experiences of sexual harassment in the workplace.

Method: The authors have carried out a literature review and identified and analyzed the knowledge prevalent in the paper's specific area of study. Twelve scientific articles function as the fundament for this paper: seven of a qualitative, three of a quantitative and two of a both qualitative and quantitative study design.

Results: The overview of accessible literature resulted in three main categories with two and three subcategories. In the main category titled Descriptions of sexual harassment, with the subcategories Different appearances and The perpetrator, there is a description of the nurses' impressions of the perpetrator as well as the way sexual harassment are expressed. In the second main category, titled The effects of sexual harassment with the subcategories Feelings, Action and strategies and Consequences, the nurses' reactions to sexual harassment both during and after the event are described. In the third main category Explanations, with the subcategories Definition and boundaries and Interpretation, what the nurses perceive as sexual harassment and how they understand what has occurred are described.

Discussion: The result is discussed from the standpoint of the different coping strategies that presented themselves. Possible explanations and solutions of the problem as well as consequences are discussed.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Backround: Many studies indicate that people with mental illness often suffer from physical illness. Many people with mental illness do not exercise even though they often have knowledge about the benefits of physical activity. Studies suggest that psychiatric patients have the desire to have an everyday life with more content. It is apparent in studies that healthcare professionals believe that it is the patients' own responsibility to keep themselves physically active.

Aim: The primary objective with this study is to examine motivation and possible obstacles to exercise for persons with self-perceived mental illness and experience of psychiatric care. The secondary objective is to investigate how psychiatric care may be of importance to people with mental illness when it comes to exercise.

Methods: Semi-structured interviews. A qualitative content analysis was used.

Results: The results were presented in five categories; exercise as self-care, to make your day meaningful, not knowing your limits, mental illness and inactivity, how health care motivates exercise. Some of the categories contained subcategories.

Discussions: The results of the study were discussed by Dorothea Orem´s self-care theory. People with mental illness may have difficulty with motivation and lack of initiative related to their illness, and by that unable to cope without the support to exercise or perform physical activity. The nurse may have a very important role to compensate for what is lacking in the patient´s knowledge and ability. The author believes that psychiatric care should implement exercise as part of treatment.

    Abstract [sv]

Strategies among young Jehovah’s Witnesses in secondary school in Sweden2012Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Sweden is among the most secular countries in the world and Jehovah’s Witness is a fundamentalist Christian organization with an ambition to present its interpretation of the Bible as truth. Emerging adults in Jehovah’s Witness are expected to behave and believe according to rules and a view of life which distinguish them from the values and teachings of the Swedish school.  The aim of the paper is to present strategies and reflections among Jehovah’s Witnesses in Swedish secondary school to meet the expectations of the religious community, when these are in conflict with the values and teachings of the school. Interviews with eleven former Jehovah’s Witnesses, now adults, have been conducted in the tradition of grounded theory. Strategies found where; 1) to stand up for their belief; 2) double standard and 3) flight. The reflections concern what it is to be an authentic person and the social context.

Psykoterapeutens känslor - risker och möjligheter i terapin2016Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

There are few references in research on the therapeutic relationship that explicitly deals with the psychotherapist's emotions in the relationship. The purpose of this study is to understand more about the psychotherapist's emotions, what triggers them in the therapy relationship and the perceived risks and opportunities with their feelings.  A qualitative methodology with an explorative approach was used for this study. Participants in the study are six psychotherapists; four women and two men, aged 50-65 years. The result shows that psychotherapists do not connect strong feelings in relation to the positive outcome in therapy. They express that as a psychotherapist one should be observant of one´s feelings and that the feelings should be kept in the background of the relationship. In the therapies that participants refer to in the interviews, the results has been good, the patients have been perceived as genuine and the psychotherapists have felt genuinely liked by the patient. Participants do not connect positive treatment outcome and authenticity of the patient in the therapy relationship. Authenticity also among the psychotherapist, both self-knowledge and professional skills are important factors for the performance of the therapeutic work.

Mer än enkla åtgärder: En litteraturöversikt om hur personer med långvarig smärta beskriver egenvård2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Pain is a multidimensional and subjective experience that can affect anyone. Pain is the most common reason to seek medical care and is the main cause to disability and inability to work. People with chronic pain need to independently manage a large part of their treatment and care in the form of self-management. One part of the nursing role is to encourage and support patients to perform self-management, however there is no clear definition of the term self-management.

Aim: To illustrate how people with chronic pain describes self-management.

Method: The literature review was based on ten scientific articles, with qualitative and quantitative approaches. The articles were found through searches in the databases CINAHL Complete and MEDLINE, with publication between the years 2005-2015. The articles were analyzed using Fribergs method of analysis.

Results: The literature review showed that people with chronic pain described that self-management was multidimensional. Self-management was considered to involve both personal abilities, mental and practical strategies. People with chronic pain also believed that education and support from healthcare was essential for self-management.

Discussion: The result has been discussed against Dorothea Orems nursing theory about self-care and relevant scientific publications. The meaning of self-management for people with chronic pain has been compared with various definitions of self-management that are applied in healthcare. Furthermore the definitions of self-management were put in relation to how the healthcare provide supporting self-management interventions.

Att vilja ha hjälp att dö: En litteraturöversikt om sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av, samt attityder kring dödshjälp.2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background: The term transgender is an umbrella term that include all people whosegender identity and/or gender expression is not congruent with theirassigned sex at birth. The prevalence of transgender people is difficult toestimate and due to stigma the numbers might be underreported.Transgender people are discriminated and exposed to violence and assault. Many end up in vulnerable socioeconomic situations that include socialexclusion, unemployment and loss of household which increases the risk fordepression, anxiety, suicide, abuse and mental distress.

Aim: To illuminate transgender peoples experiences of health care staff’s attitudestowards them in the general health care.

Method: A literature review was conducted to answer the aim. Eight scientificarticles were analyzed focusing on similarities and differences.

Results: The results are presented in five main themes: Supporting the self-concept,To disclose ones gender identity, Knowledge and attitudes within the healthcare system, Discriminated due to ones identity and The responsibility lieson the patient.

Discussion: The discussion emphasize how health care staff can gain understanding fortransgender peoples needs related to Husserl’s theory of the life world. Theconcept of care are discussed related to the substandard patient-caregiverrelationship that many transgender people report about. The lack ofknowledge within the health care system is discussed as well as how it willeffect transgender peoples access to care and the need of education.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Alcohol consumption contributes to disease, disability and increased morbidity worldwide. Treatment options for those with problematic alcohol use are primarily medical- and/or therapeutic interventions. Relapse in the problematic behaviour is relatively common. There is therefore a need to continue to develop the care provided to people undergoing alcohol treatment. Physical activity is a nursing intervention that the nurse can use to promote healthy lifestyles and alleviate disease. There is preliminary research on the positive impact that physical activity have for patients with alcohol use disorders but no research is to be found on whether the intervention is used in the clinical practice.

Aim: To describe nurses' perceptions and experiences of physical activity for patients with alcohol use disorders.

Method: Qualitative design with semi-structured interviews was conducted with seven nurses working at outpatient dependence clinics. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyse the data.

Results: The nurses described the physical activity as a fundamental element of health and as a necessity in the patient's everyday life. Physical activity was a way for the patient to break habits associated with alcohol. Physical activity was considered to decrease many of the comorbid conditions related to alcohol use, increased the patient's self-esteem and was a way for the patient to independently affect their health. The nurses searched to inform and motivate the patient to the right level of physical activity. There was a lack of structure in the everyday clinical practice and nurses demanded practical possibilities and better guidelines within the organization to facilitate the promotion of physical activity to patients.

Discussions: The results are discussed from Orems self-care theory and relevant research.

    Abstract [en]

andersson å. & hansebo g. (2009) Elderly peoples' experience of nursing care after a stroke: from a gender perspective. Journal of Advanced NursingAbstract Title. Elderly peoples' experience of nursing care after a stroke: from a gender perspective. Aim. This paper is a report of a study conducted to explore, from a gender perspective, older people's experiences of nursing care after a stroke. Background. Little attention has been given to gender differences in nursing care. The majority of people who have a stroke are older. Improving knowledge of the gender perspectives of older men and women regarding nursing care after stroke is crucial. Method. This was a qualitative study based on interviews with five women and five men between 66 and 75 years of age, who had received nursing care at a ward for stroke rehabilitation. The data were collected in 2006. Qualitative content analysis of the interviews was carried out. Findings. A main theme and five categories, all common to both men and women, were identified. The main theme, to promote recovery of the body, encompassed the categories. There were, however, gender differences in how the nursing care received was experienced. The ways patients experienced nursing care seemed to be linked with their lives as women and men before they had the stroke. Their perceptions are linked with their lives as women and men before they had their stroke. Both men and women will reclaim former abilities but what they perceive to be the goals of nursing care and rehabilitation may differ. Conclusion. Nurses need to increase their awareness and knowledge concerning the similarities and gender differences in the experiences and needs of older people, both men and women.

Narratives of children with chronic illness about being comforted.2008In: Journal of Pediatric Nursing: Nursing Care of Children and Families, ISSN 0882-5963, E-ISSN 1532-8449, Vol. 23, no 4, p. 310-6Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to examine how children with chronic illnesses narrate their experience of being comforted in hospital. During interviews, seven children, 4-10 years old described their experiences and made drawings. Thematic content analysis revealed following themes: being physically close to one's family, feeling safe and secure, staff being there for the children, and children being there for parents and siblings. Mother was identified as the most important comforter. The findings suggest that trusting in the staff's knowledge and professional skills is a prerequisite for children to feel "at home", and safe in hospital. Being close to one's family is even more important.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Schizophrenia is a mental disorder with a high suicidal risk. The most common symptoms experienced with schizophrenia are auditory hallucinations which can be experienced both in a positive and a negative way. The disorder is stigmatized most likely due to a lack of knowledge and a fear of the person.

Aim: To describe adults experiences of auditory hallucinations induced by schizophrenia.

Method: The literature review consisted of twelve scientific articles of which nine were conducted using a qualitative approach and three with a quantitative research methodology. The articles were found in the databases CINAHL Complete, PubMed and PsycINFO. The following words were used in the databases: hallucination, voice hearing, psychosis, patient, life, hearing voices, nursing, people who hear voices, auditory hallucinations, schizophrenia and experiences.

Results: The results were divided into four themes: The nature of the voice described the characteristics of the voice i.e. tone, feeling, intensity and duration. The relation to the voice described how the affected persons identified the voice as a part of themselves. Finding meaning and coping strategies described the different strategies which were used to cope with the voices. The impact on the individual highlighted how the person was affected by the voices by an altered self, added self-harm behavior, isolation and loss of control.

Discussions: The results were discussed with the concepts of life world and finding meaning. Finding meaning was found as one of the affected person’s most important coping strategies for dealing with the auditory hallucinations.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of today's most common diseases, and is expected in less than ten years to become the third largest cause of death worldwide. The disease causes breathlessness, cough and increased sputum. Most people who contract the disease are individuals who are or have been smokers. People living with the disease often experience a hard time to not have the same strength as before and experiencing stigmatizing condemnation because the presumable cause of the disease.

Aim: The aim with this study was to describe the experience of living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Methods: This is a literature review based on eleven scientific articles. The articles are reviewed and quality analyzed by both the authors in several steps according to the recommendations of the analysis procedure by Friberg (2012). All the articles are available in the databases PubMed and CINAHL and are published 2008-2013.

Results: The results proved that the physical symptoms that were most problematic for a person with the disease is to have problem with their breathing. Other symptoms recognized as troublesome was the increased mucous secretion, cough and fatigue, which are common in COPD. The psychological symptoms that were common were anxiety, depression and frustration about the loss of energy and this was mainly due to the breathing. Condemnatory attitudes about the disease's onset with questions about the past and/or current smoking behavior which created feelings of guilt and shame. Many people decided to continue smoking despite their diagnosis and feelings of guilt. They saw the smoking as a routine and an activity in their daily lives that they didn’t want to be without.

Discussion: The discussion concluded that COPD involved a life of suffering for those who gets the disease. Suffering was experienced in loss of social interactions. According to the nursing theorist Katie Eriksson life suffering arise when energy is not sufficient to engage in social interactions. Suffering could also be experienced when a person became dependent on others to cope with everyday tasks, when the energy wasn’t enough. The physical and psychological symptoms that emerged because of the disease were experienced as a lower quality of life. Judgmental attitudes that could occur to people with COPD could cause a suffering. According to Eriksson the reason to this can be that the person does not feel valued as a person. Those who chose to continue smoking felt that smoking resulted in a quality of life and reduced suffering.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Touching exists in different forms and can be experienced through the skin. By touching oxytocin is released like a relaxing hormone which counteracts anxiety and depression. Therapeutic contact and healing touch are methods nurses’ uses to give positive feeling of serenity, warmth and wellbeing for the patients. Touching can be a method for communication and happiness when word is not enough. By touching can nurses notice if a patient is, for example, anxious. The hands of the nurse are important caring of the patient such as adequate touching calms and sooths anxiety and pain.

Aim:  To describe the significance to give touch in nursing.

Method: A literary summary of scientific articles published between 1995 until 2012, where seven of them have qualitative approach and three have quantitative and all of them found via the databases CINAHL and MEDLINE.

Result: Nurses were describing how touching had positive significance for the patients. The nurses could by touching reduce the patient’s pain, anxiety and worries. Different sorts of touching was mentioned like massage. A general theme was touching by non-verbal communication which gave a sense of security to the patients. The nurses’ attitude to touch became a problem since the nurses only touched the patients when necessary, for example when caring by hygiene without respecting the patients’ integrity.

Discussion: In the result discussion it was described how the limited knowledge by the nurses of touching. By training (and education) they could carry though touching with help of different types of touching, massage, tactile touching, therapeutic touch etc. It relieved the state of pain, anxiety, and it also created security, closeness, better sleep and well-being of the patient. The touch adapted to the patients’ needs was described as positive and meaningful. To build an interpersonal relationship was essential and fundamental before the nurse approached the patient.

Polyfarmacins påverkan på de äldres dagliga liv: En litteraturöversikt2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: In the natural aging process, changes occur in the body that affect the elderly person's daily life. Aging often leads to diseases that require treatment in form of drugs. The term polypharmacy describes the use of multiple drugs. Medications are the most common form of treatment and may contribute to both positive and negative effects on elderly’s health.

Aim: The aim was to illuminate nursing problems in elderly regarding polypharmacy.

Method: A literature review was performed based on 11 quantitative scientific articles. Databases used were Cinahl, PubMed and MedLine. Among the keywords used were polypharmacy, aged, risk factors and nursing. The theoretical framework was nurse Carnevali’s model (1996) dealing with nursing diagnosis.

Results: From the selected articles’ results revealed four main categories were: 1) fall and risk of falling, which relate to how the elderly’s risk of falling increases with intake of many medications and its consequences, 2) non- adherence highlights the reasons why prescriptions are not followed neither by patients nor healthcare professionals. 3) Nutritional status and malnutrition concerns how polypharmacy can affect the elderly’s nutritional status and as a consequence lead to for example malnutrition, and 4) functional decline and the elderly’s (dis)ability to function in daily life is the last major category that could be affected by polypharmacy.

Discussion: A difficulty that emerges from the literature is that the definition of polypharmacy is not identified. Despite this, it appears the nursing problems related to drugs can also correlate with multimorbidity which is common in the natural aging process.

Aspekter som påverkar sjuksköterskors attityder till substansmissbrukare: En litteraturöversikt2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: There is no singular reason why a person ends up in substance abuse. Substance abuse poses health risks, which means that they will come in contact with health services. In the society the substance abusers are stigmatized which may affect the nurses’ behavior towards them.

Aim: Highlighting the aspects that contribute to the nurse’s attitudes towards patients with a substance abuse problem and how the attitudes affect the health care.

Method: The literature review is based on twelve scientific studies. The studies were analyzed toillustrate the similarities and differences. These were discussed and when the authors agreed it was written into the literature review's results.

Results: The results showed that the nurse’s previous experiences had a big impact on how the nurses saw patients and how their attitudes influenced their expression. Previous experience contributed to fear and insecurity among many of the nurses. The professional competence turned out to have an impact because the nurse’s lack of knowledge of how an addiction affects prevented them to see the patient as a human being. Nurses with a high level of caring awareness managed this better.

Discussion: The discussion includes Ericsson’s theory of suffering and the metaparadigm caring. Nurses’ attitudes affect the care relationship and that negative attitudes create an unnecessary suffering related to care and illness because there is a risk of information being overlooked. Social stigma affects how the nurses perceive the addict as a patient. A paternalistic approach may be necessary to increase the patients’ chances to have a future autonomy.
