Background: Living with incurable cancer and progressive disease affects the whole person in different ways. Specialized palliative care should meet the patient's needs whether they are physical, psychological, existential or social needs. Patients have different needs, and these needs may vary over the course of the illness and therefore the nurse needs to know what support the individual patient may need in order to work in a person-centered way.

Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate whether the translated Your Need for Support - Patient discussion guide has good content validity, relevance, clarity and sensitivity for use in Swedish specialised palliative home care.

Method: Cognitive interview methodology was chosen to explore what patients think and how they reason about the counselling material and its use. Recruitment of patients was done by a specialised palliative care home care unit. Interviews were conducted with 11 patients, 7 women and 4 men with an average age of 66 years. The majority were diagnosed with incurable cancer. Data was analysed qualitatively and compiled according to the predetermined categories with a focus on relevance, clarity and sensitivity.

Results: The patients in this study found SNAP to be a relevant discussion tool that could be used in their care to express their support needs. Using SNAP provided the opportunity to work in a person-centred way but also to structure the conversation with the nurse. The discussion sheet was easy to use as it was on one page and not too many questions. It was positive that it covered areas that everyone had thought about, such as financial and housing issues.

Conclusion: The call sheet has good content validity, relevance, clarity and sensitivity to be used in specialised palliative home care in order to capture the support needed by the individual patient and thus be able to work in a person-centred way.

Bakgrund: Att leva med obotlig cancersjukdom och progressiv sjukdom påverkar hela människan på olika sätt. Specialiserad palliativ vård ska tillgodose patientens behov oavsett om det är fysiska, psykiska, existentiella eller sociala behov. Patienter har olika behov och behoven kan variera under sjukdomens gång och därför behöver sjuksköterskan veta vilket stöd den enskilda patienten kan behöva för att arbeta personcentrerat.

Syfte: Syftet med studien var att undersöka om det översatta samtalsunderlaget Ditt behov av stöd – Patient har god innehållsvaliditet, relevans, tydlighet och känslighet för användning inom svensk specialiserad palliativ hemsjukvård.

Metod: Kognitiv intervjumetodik valdes för att undersöka vad patienterna tycker och hur de resonerar kring samtalsunderlaget och dess användning. Rekrytering av patienter gjordes vid en specialiserad palliativ enhet hemsjukvårdsenhet. Intervjuer gjordes med 11 patienter, varav 7 kvinnor och 4 män med en medelålder av 66 år. Majoriteten av deltagarna var diagnostiserad med obotlig cancer. Data analyserades kvalitativt och sammanställdes enligt de förutbestämda kategorierna med fokus på relevans, tydlighet och känslighet.

Resultat: Patienterna i studien ansåg att SNAP var ett relevant samtalsunderlag som kunde användas i vården för att patienter ska kunna uttrycka vilket behov av stöd de behöver. SNAP gav möjlighet att få struktur i samtal med sjuksköterskan. Samtalsunderlaget var enkelt att använda då det var på en sida och inte för många frågor. Positivt var att det täckte in områden som patienterna hade funderat på såsom exempelvis ekonomiska frågor och boendefrågor.

Slutsats: Samtalsunderlaget har god innehållsvaliditet, relevans, tydlighet och känslighet för att kunna användas inom specialiserad palliativ hemsjukvård för att kunna fånga upp vilket stöd den individuella patienten behöver och därmed vara personcentrerat.
