Bakgrund: Synen på döden påverkas av kultur, religion och personliga erfarenheter och väcker frågor om livets mening. När döden kommer nära, som vid sjukdom, blir behovet av stöd påtagligt. Palliativ vård syftar till att lindra lidande och ge livets slutskede värdighet. Sjuksköterskor spelar en central roll genom att lindra symtom, stödja patientens behov och skapa trygghet för både patient och närstående, vilket gör de sista stunderna så meningsfulla och trygga som möjligt. 

Syfte: Syftet var att beskriva sjuksköterskors erfarenheter av att vårda vuxna patienter i livets slutskede. 

Metod: En kvalitativ litteraturöversikt baserad på tio vårdvetenskapliga originalartiklar från CINAHL och PubMed. 

Resultat: Resultatet sammanfattas i följande rubriker: Etiska utmaningar vid övergång från kurativ till palliativ vård. Erfarenhet av kompetens och utbildning. Emotionella erfarenheter. Relation till anhöriga. Organisatoriska strukturer för omvårdnad. 

Slutsats: Sjuksköterskor beskriver palliativ vård som både komplex och känslomässigt krävande. Etiska dilemman skapar moralisk stress, särskilt när tidspress, personalbrist och bristande kommunikation gör det svårt att möta patienters och närståendes behov av trygghet och värdighet. Detta väcker känslor av otillräcklighet, men också upplevelser av stor meningsfullhet i att stödja patienter i livets slutskede. Erfarenheterna betonar att god kommunikation, samarbete mellan professioner och starkt kollegialt stöd är centralt för en etiskt hållbar och personcentrerad palliativ vård. 

Background: Perceptions of death are shaped by culture, religion, and personal experiences, and evoke questions about the meaning of life. When death approaches, such as in the context of illness, the need for support becomes evident. Palliative care aims to relieve suffering and provide dignity at the end of life. Nurses play a central role by relieving symptoms, addressing patients’ needs, and creating a sense of security for both patients and their relatives, thereby making the final moments as meaningful and comforting as possible. 

Aim: The aim was to describe nurses' experiences of caring for adult patients at the end of life. Method: A qualitative literature review based on ten nursing science original articles from CINAHL and PubMed. 

Results: The results are summarized under the following headings: Ethical challenges in the transition from curative to palliative care. Experience of competence and education. Emotional experiences. Relationship with family members. Organizational structures for nursing. 

Conclusion: Nurses describe palliative care as both complex and emotionally demanding. Ethical dilemmas contribute to moral distress, particularly when time constraints, staff shortages, and inadequate communication make it difficult to meet the needs of patients and their families for security and dignity. This evokes feelings of inadequacy, but also experiences of profound meaning in supporting patients at the end of life. The findings highlight that effective communication, interprofessional collaboration, and strong collegial support are essential for ethically sustainable and person-centred palliative care.
