Patients’ experiences after surviving a cardiac arrest : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund

Abstract [en]

Background

Around 10 000 people per year suffer from cardiac arrest out of hospitals in Sweden. Only around 12 percent survive. The condition means that the heart stops pumping blood to the body which requires immediate CPR and defibrillation. Every minute without help reduces the chances of surviving by 10percent. Nurses have a significant responsibility in nursing care and need both adequate education and insight into patients' experiences to provide the best possible care.

Aim

The purpose was to describe patients' experiences after surviving a cardiac arrest.

Method

A literature review with ten qualitative scientific articles. The databases used were Cinahl complete and pubmed. Friberg’s description of the method was used.ResultsThe results identified four themes: psychological changes, cognitive and physical changes, existential changes, and about the care relation. Survivors of cardiac arrest described anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder, as well as memory problems and difficulties with problem solving, planning, and attention. Physical complaints such as chest pain, high heart rate, and shortness of breath occurred. Many experienced the event as life-changing and redefining themselves, while some felt anger. Lack of communication with healthcare professionals and inadequate preparation for the time after cardiac arrest also emerged.

Conclusion

Survival after a cardiac arrest is a long and complex recovery process. The findings highlight the need for increased competence and long-term support to reduce the consequences of cardiac arrest, to have a worthy and meaningful life for this patient group.
