Older peoples’ experiences of loneliness : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Sweden's population is getting older, and aging involves changes that affect the body, mental health and social relationships. Health is seen as a holistic concept where social community and participation are important for well-being. Loneliness and social isolation are central risk factors for poor mental health in the elderly.

Aim: To describe older people's experience of loneliness.

Method: A literature review with a qualitative approach was conducted, where older people's experiences of loneliness were studied through systematically selected and quality-reviewed articles from PubMed and CINAHL Complete.

Results: The results show that loneliness among older adults is a complex phenomenon influenced by social losses, emotional experiences, and physical limitations. Life losses and reduced social support contribute to decreased social connectedness, while loneliness is also described as a subjective experience that varies depending on the situation and the individual’s interpretation of their life situation. Physical limitations, such as reduced mobility and illness, decrease opportunities for social participation and may intensify the experience of loneliness.

Conclusion: Loneliness in older people is a complex phenomenon that is influenced by social, mental and physical factors. Loneliness is both about a lack of social contact and about a subjective experience linked to the individual's life situation. Loneliness can be reduced through social support and individually adapted interventions. The nurse has an important job in recognizing loneliness and working person-centered to reduce suffering and promote quality of life.
