Coping strategies in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus : A literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Type 2 diabetes is one of the world's fastest growing public health diseases, affecting over 830 million people globally and leading to serious complications when inadequately treated. The disease develops through a gradual decline in insulin sensitivity and increased blood sugar levels, and is influenced by factors such as obesity, physical inactivity, and heredity. In addition to the physical consequences, the diagnosis also entails significant psychosocial strain for the patient and their relatives, such as shock, denial, anxiety, and feelings of hopelessness. To understand how patients manage these strains, the concept of coping is used, defined by Lazarus and Folkman as cognitive and behavioral efforts to manage demands that exceed the individual's resources. Coping is closely linked to self-care and can be influenced through structured nursing interventions. Patient education plays a central role in strengthening self-care capacity, and research emphasizes the importance of individualized and continuous education based on the patient's conditions and life situation. Person-centered care, where the patient is regarded as an equal partner, and the nurse's responsibility for care, regulated through legislation and the ICN Code of Ethics, constitute important frameworks for how support for patients with type 2 diabetes should be designed.
