To work as a social worker with visual impairment : A qualitative study on digital and technological assistive tools that enable professional practice and promote social inclusion. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine how social workers with visual impairments experience their professional practice in an increasingly digitalized work environment. The study particularly focuses on the significance of technical and digital assistive technologies for independence, participation, and inclusion in working life, as well as the barriers and opportunities related to digital systems. The study is based on a qualitative method using semi-structured interviews. In total, seven individuals working within social work who use various forms of technical assistive technologies in their work were interviewed. The material was analyzed through thematic analysis based on Giddens’ structuration theory, Goffman’s theory of stigma, and Bourdieu’s theory of capital and habitus.

The results show that assistive technologies such as screen readers, magnification tools, and speech synthesis are crucial for the respondents’ ability to work independently and professionally. These assistive technologies contribute to increased participation, efficiency, and opportunities to perform work tasks on more equal terms. At the same time, the findings indicate that many digital systems are still inaccessible because they are designed according to visual norms, which creates bariers and increases the workload for people with visual impairments. The study also shows that attitudes, organizational support, and digital competence are of great importance for the experience of inclusionin working life.

The conclusion is that digitalization can both create new opportunities and contribute to new forms of exclusion if accessibility is not integrated into the development of digital systems from the beginning.
